Chapter 297
I instinctively took a step back. âFrankâ¦â
He glanced at me, suppressing his emotions, and said curtly, âLeave.â
He then squatted down and began picking up the shards of the broken piggy bank, carefully.
I felt quite sorry and quickly crouched down to help him, âIâm sorry, Iâ¦â
He didnât even look up and repeated coldly, âI said leave.â
âCharlotte, letâs goâ¦â
Megan grabbed my hand and led me out, gently closing the door behind us before explaining, âThat piggy bank was his most treasured possession. He took it everywhere and never let anyone touch it.â
âHeâ¦â I felt some guilt and wanted to make amends. âDo you know where I can buy a replacement for that piggy bank? Iâll get him a new one.â
âIt canât be bought.â
Megan shook her head helplessly, âThat piggy bank was a gift made by a ceramic artist that Lily begged Madam Shaw to invite for my brotherâs birthday. It was made just for him. The rabbit on it represents Lily herself. She wanted to accompany my brother every day.â
I was silent for a moment. âNo wonder he cherished it so muchâ¦â
âYeah.â Megan sighed. âActually, I wasnât even born at that time, but both my family and my brother loved her a lot. If not for the accident, they would have probably been married by now.â
She lowered her voice and said mysteriously, âCharlotte, do you know what kind of situations the coins inside were saved from?â
I asked, âWhat kind of situations?â
In this day and age, it was surprising to hear someone still had the habit of saving coins.
âOnceâ¦â Megan glanced timidly towards the study to confirm Frank was still inside, then leaned in closer and said, âI once saw him secretly with red eyes, sniffling while dropping a coin into it!â
âWhen I asked him later, he wouldnât admit it. But then again, he never cried even when he was injured all over as a child.â
âSo I guess, whenever he missed Lily very much, he would save a coin
Tran my fingers unconsciously over my palm, âDo you have a photo of that piggy bank?â
Hearing Meganâs story and thinking about the coins scattered on the floor earlier, I found it hard to
imagine how Frank had managed all these years. Now, the most precious thing to him was in pieces, I needed to find a way to make up for it.
âYes.â
âCould you send it to me?â

As soon as I finished speaking, Frank emerged with a cold expression, as if nothing had happened, but the light in his brown eyes was sparse and fragmented.
Seeing me still there, his lashes drooped momentarily before he looked at me again with his usual casual demeanor, âStill here?â
I bit my lip. âYeah⦠I just wanted to apologize in person.â
He took a bottle of fizzy pop from the fridge, opened it, and took a swig, his Adamâs apple moving slightly.
In the end, his naturally cold eyes had a hint of cynicism. âYouâre actually apologizing in front of me?â
I knew I was in the wrong and allowed him to be sarcastic. âYes, I was wrong. Could Mr. Smith let bygones be bygones?â
He smiled faintly and indifferently. âDepends.â
âAlright, then. Iâll let you be. Iâll head home now?â
âOkay.â He gave a brief, indifferent reply.
After saying goodbye to Megan, I turned and left.
Just as I stepped out of Frankâs house and closed the door behind me, I saw Jack standing at my door. Noticing the commotion, he looked over and appeared surprised to see me coming from Frankâs place. âHow come⦠youâre at Mr. Smithâs place? I thought you hadnât come back yet.â
âWell, I treated him and his sister to pizza.â
I smiled and walked over to open the door, casually adding, âBethany caused trouble at the company again today, and his sister helped me out.â
Jack raised an eyebrow, âHis sister? Which sister?â
âMegan. Do you know her?â
He thought for a moment. âI donât think Iâve heard of her.
âBy the way, why did you come over so late?â
