Chapter 29
âMy back hurts so muchâ¦â She nestled in Ryanâs arms, crying as she complained, âI just asked about her progress at work, and she pushed. me⦠Ryan, canât you just let her be the director? Everyone else supports her too. I really donât want to work in this kind of environment anymore.â
Listening to her, I couldnât help but admire her skill at making up lies. I almost burst out laughing, but then I met Ryanâs scrutinizing gaze.
âIs that so?â His voice was icy, sending a chill down my spine.
I chuckled selfâdeprecatingly. âIf I say itâs not true, would you believe me?â
âRyanâ¦â
Jessicaâs eyes welled up with tears, her delicate fingers tugging at his collar. This suit was one I personally designed and tailored for him. It was a gift I gave him for Valentineâs Day this year.
He didnât answer my question. Instead, he just lowered his gaze to the woman in his arms, furrowing his brow. He seemed impatient but concerned as he said, âYouâre not a child. Crying like this after a fall? Let me take you to the hospital.â
Then he left in large strides, as if afraid that something might happen to the woman he cared about, leaving behind only a cold silhouette.
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my eyes dry and devoid of emotion.
âCharlotte, what are you disappointed about? Heâs just your exâhusband
now.â
Once they were out of sight, Nancy rushed in anxiously. âCharlotte, are you okay?â
âWhy wouldnât I be?â I forced a smile on my face.
Ryan wouldnât dare to do anything to me. Otherwise, he would have to answer to his grandfather.

Nancy glanced in the direction Ryan and Jessica had left, then turned back to me. âMr. Frost was holding Mr. Frost in his arms like that. Everyone is guessing what their relationship is. Could she really be Mr. Frostâs wife?â
With that thought in mind, she looked at me with a face full of despair and worry. âWhat if thatâs the case, Charlotte? You and her donât get along. Sheâll definitely bully you!â
My heart sank. It was pointless to say anything else. I was already used
to it.
I had been married to Ryan for three years, and apart from Jane and Gary, no one in the company knew about our relationship. Now, before we even got divorced, he didnât bother hiding his relationship wit Jessica. Then why did he hold me last night, saying that he never intended for things to turn out this way?
Such a thought made me feel that he was just a hypocrite.
I pursed my lips lightly. âItâs okay. When the time comes, Iâll leave.â
âThen take me with you! Iâll go wherever you go!â
âOkay.â
Seeing Nancyâs fawning appearance, I couldnât help but laugh.
Jessica was just a titleholder and did nothing. Most of the directorâs and deputy directorâs work fell on me.
At noon, I was too busy to go downstairs for lunch. Nancy brought me a portion of beef curry. When she lifted the lid, a wave of nausea surged up from my stomach.
âCharlotte, donât you want to eat this? Iâll go buy you something else,â
she said.
âNo need, this is fine.â I suppressed the urge to throw up and forced myself to eat.

It was probably because of aggravated morning sickness.
The food I wasnât sold nearby. There was no need to go through the trouble.
Unexpectedly, halfway through eating, I threw up into the trash can, tears and snot streaming down my face..
Fortunately, I kept the noise down, so no one should have heard.
In the evening, just before getting off work, Jane knocked on the door.
âI forgot to tell you that the garage called me yesterday. Theyâre done with your carâs repairs. Do you want me to come with you to pick i ?â.
I didnât even bother to lift my head. âOkay, wait for me. Iâm almost done here.â
âBusy woman.â Jane chuckled and sat down in the chair on the other side of my desk, playing with her phone idly.
After a while, she suddenly stood up and exclaimed, âWhy is your ear bleeding?â
