Chapter 239
Such a grand gesture.
My gaze shifted to that cheque, where I saw a number starting with â5â and a long string of zeros. Never had I imagined that the melodramatic plots from novels would one day play out in my life. No, this was even more melodramatic than in novels. In novels, at least it was the male leadâs mother who showed up with a cheque to kick out the female lead. What was happening to me?
I found it utterly ridiculous. âAre you determined to get your way today?â
She was determined to clear the obstacle that I represented for her beloved daughter.
Mrs. Shaw remained cold and unyielding, her eyes devoid of warmth as she stared at me. âWhat do you think?â
I picked up the check. Under her approving gaze, I tore it into pieces, dropped them lightly to the floor, and smiled. âIâm sorry to disappoint yòù. I donât buy into your threats and temptations!â
People who had nothing left were the most frightening. The Shaw family might need to consider their reputation, but as for me, a person with nothing, what was there to fear? I simply didnât believe that the Shaw family could erase me so quietly.
âYou!â Mrs. Shaw pointed at me angrily. âYouâre asking for the hard way!â
âOh, Mrs. Shaw, Bethany really is your wellâraised daughter. Both of you have the same lines.â I commented lightly. âItâs just that hearing it over and over again gets a bit tedious!â
Then, I pulled out a 20âdollar note from my bag and slapped it on the table in front of her. âActing like money means nothing? Take this money and keep your daughter away from me!â

With that, I turned away, ignoring her changing face, and left!
The privilege of humiliating people wasnât exclusive to the wealthy.
Outside, Jane hurried over, looking concerned. âWhat happened? Do you know her?â
âBethanyâs mother,â I replied as I led her towards the elevator,
explaining as we walked, âShe came to speak up for her daughter and tried to pressure me into divorcing.â
In just a few words, I made Jane understand the situation clearly.
Jane was furious, itching to turn back and argue. âThese two are like two frogs hopping around at night, each one trying to outdo the other!â
Unexpectedly, Mrs. Shaw, who was not far behind and had heard everything clearly, had a terribly grim expression on her face. âBirds of a feather!â
âWell, people tend to flock together. Otherwise, how could you have adopted someone like Bethany?â Jane teased with a smirk. âYour own daughter probably disappeared for so many years because she was embarrassed by you and your shameful behavior!â
That hit her where it hurt.
No one had ever gotten away with arguing with Jane.
Mrs. Shaw was so enraged her face turned purple. She strode over angrily, about to slap Jane in the face, and I wanted to stop her, but Jane acted faster.
âDonât touch me. I have a phobia.â She firmly blocked her, avoiding her disdainfully. âFine, I wonât pressure you anymore. Iâm afraid youâll jump off the deep end.â
People only jump when they were desperate.

Atrs. Shaw probably hadnât been insulted like this since she married into the Shaw family. Her chest heaved violently as she glared fiercely at Jane. âDo you know who I am? How dare you speak to me like this?!â
âSo what if I did? If you canât hear properly, I can come back and carve the words on your tombstone!â Jane retorted brazenly.
She had her say, and the elevator doors happened to close, leaving Mrs. Shaw with a face as ugly as ever!
As the elevator doors closed, Jane cocked her brows. âFeel better now?â
I couldnât help but smile. âYeah, maybe a little.â
âGood!â Jane patted my head affectionately, like comforting a child. Letâs go, Iâll treat you to dinner. How about the spicy hot pot place near the back gate of the school?â
