Chapter 209
âSuicide? So, is suicide their familyâs specialty, passed down through the generations?â I wondered.
I didnât know what mentality I was in, but almost involuntarily, I asked, âDo you need me to go with you?â
Maybe I wanted to see for myself if it was true or false.
Or perhaps, I was afraid⦠afraid that if something really happened, Ryan wouldnât have anyone he could trust by his side.
Ryan looked at me with surprise. âCan you?â
âLetâs go.â I picked up my bag and went with him to the hospital.
When we arrived at the hospital, Lauren was still in the emergency room, and Jessica and John were waiting outside.
The scene struck me as somewhat comical.
But at such a tense moment, I shouldnât be laughing, so I mentally reviewed all the unhappy events in my life.
Ryan, Jessica, John, plus Lauren inside the emergency room.
If you were to draw a relationship diagram of these four people, it would probably resemble a chaotic spider web.
Jessica suddenly rushed over and shoved me forcefully. âCharlotte, what are you laughing at? My mom is in trouble, are you happy about this, coming specially to see the excitement?â
Yes, I tried hard to suppress my laughter, but couldnât.
But I lagged behind Ryan by half a step, and he didnât see.
Immediately, he shielded me behind him, his face frosty, his voice icy. âWhatâs wrong with you? I asked Charlotte to come.â
âRyanâ¦â
Jessicaâs and Johnâs matter had been exposed. She dared not act as usual in front of Ryan and just burst into tears. âWhy did you ask her to come? If it werenât for her provoking my mom so much, how could my mom have committed suicide!â
âWhat do you mean by provoking?â I stepped forward, speaking calmly and reasonably. âYou did things willingly. At the Civil Affairs Bureau, it was you who cursed and fought with your mom. What does that have to do with me?â
âYou!â
Jessica was momentarily speechless, hindered by Ryanâs presence, she could only glare at me angrily. John, on the other hand, was concerned about his confidante and accused me indignantly, âCharlotte,

when Grandpa was alive, you were still gentle and kind. How did you become like this now? Do you want to disturb this family into chaos?â
Both were good at pinning the blame.
After the online incident, they had been criticized for two days and nights. Probably the only conclusion they drew was that it was all my fault.
I didnât know where I had gone wrong.
I frowned, hearing Ryanâs voice sharpened as he mocked coldly, âCharlotte causing trouble? As my wife, she shouldâve managed your and my stepâsisterâs private lives better? This blame is something my wife cannot shoulder.â
*1â¦â
John was somewhat afraid of him to begin with. After Grandpa passed away, his living expenses depended on Ryanâs goodwill. Now, being hit with such words, he flushed red with anger but dared not say anything. Nor could he say anything.
With a single sentence that criticized two people, Jessica seemed not to feel Ryanâs disgust. She reached out and grabbed Ryanâs sleeve, crying pitifully, âI was⦠I was wrong, terribly wrong! But Ryan, my father and I only had some drinks that day. I donât know who put drugs in our drinks, and thatâs why weâ¦â
Ryan frowned deeply upon hearing this, pushing her away with a wave of his hand. He took off his suit jacket that she had touched and threw it into the medical waste bin.
âAll of this doesnât matter.â Ryanâs eyes were cold, his voice chilling as he demanded, âI just want to know, whatâs the truth behind what you said about Lauren being a mistress? Explain it clearly.â
