âStop trying to scare me!â

After Bob yelled this sentence, his eyes showed fear, and before I could respond, he ran away!
âAlright, Jane, I have something to attend to right now, Iâll get back to you later.â
I hung up on Janeâs call and turned to Bradley, who seemed invisible as always. âDid you just going to stand by and watch your father treat your mother like this?â
Bradley shrugged. âI donât have his strength, and he doesnât listen to me.â
I was furious beyond words, unsure of what to say.
But Aunt Laura endured the pain and spoke up, âBradley, wait outside for a moment. I need to talk to your cousin.â
âOkay.â
After Bradley left, I pulled up a chair and sat by the bedside. âAre your injuries taken care of properly? Is there anything left untreated?â
âNo. These wounds just look severe. The doctors and security stopped your uncle before it got too
serious.â
Aunt Laura shook her head, looking weaker than the last time I saw her. Tears silently streamed down her face. âI wanted to divorce him, but he wonât agreeâ¦â
I sighed. âDonât worry, Iâll figure something out.â
Bob wasnât like Ryan. Getting a divorce from him shouldnât be that complicated. But first, I needed to ensure Aunt Lauraâs safety, at least to prevent her from being hurt again.
Aunt Laura seemed apologetic, holding my hand. âOkay⦠Charlotte, Iâve caused you too much trouble.â
âWeâre family, why say such things?â
I shook my head, preparing some fruit while keeping an eye on Aunt Lauraâs condition. Seeing her growing tired, I stood up to leave.
As I reached the door of the hospital room, Aunt Laura called out to me. âCharlotteâ¦â
I turned back, seeing the struggle and hesitation on Aunt Lauraâs face. Curious, I approached her again and asked softly, âWhat is it?â.
âYouâ¦â Aunt Laura hesitated, her hands clenched into fists on the blanket. Tears flowed silently again. After what seemed like an eternity, she spoke once more, as if making an incredibly difficult decision. âI⦠I have something to give you.â
Confused, I asked, âWhat is it?â
Instead of answering immediately, Aunt Laura got off the bed and asked me to help lift the mattress. From underneath, she retrieved a small cloth bag.

Carefully, she opened the bag and took out a silver pendant in the shape of a rabbit. Though the red string around it had turned a bit pale, the silver pendant itself was clearly pricelessâa piece of craftsmanship not seen in recent years.
Aunt Laura helped me put it around my neck and said earnestly, âCharlotte, please donât lose thisâ¦*
âThis is too valuable, I canât acceptâ¦â
âThis belongs to you.â
Aunt Laura looked at me with determination, her eyes full of words unsaid. Finally, she simply said,â Trust me on this, Charlotte. Itâs yours.â
I hesitated. âIs this⦠something my parents left behind?â
Even though my parents were wealthy, it would have been difficult for them to acquire such an invaluable piece.
âYesâ¦â
Aunt Laura struggled for a moment, then after helping me wear it and tucking the pendant inside my clothing, she avoided my gaze. âJust consider it so.â
âConsider it so?â
I was perplexed by her words, but Aunt Laura seemed unwilling to say more. âAlright, Iâm tired. You should go back now.â
Leaving the hospital with a heart full of questions, toccasionally touched the silver pendant while driving.
Strangely, it didnât feel unfamiliar at all. It was almost as if it belonged to me. Later, it dawned on me that the zodiac symbol on the pendant matched mineâa rabbit.
But as far as I could remember, I had never seen this item beforeâ¦
At the same time, Ryan called.
Thinking about the pressing matters on my mind, I answered without hesitation, âHello.â
His tone was indifferent. âI heard there was trouble at the hospital?â
âYeah.â
Glancing at the traffic light, I pressed the brake slowly. âRyan, can you help me with something?â
I wasnât sure if he would agree. We had argued fiercely just yesterday, and the internet was buzzing nonstop about it.
But besides him, I didnât know who else to turn to.
He seemed to be signing something, the sound of a pen scratching on paper audible. His voice was low. âWhat is it? Tell me.â
âI want to borrow two bodyguards for the hospital.â

I could find a lawyer myself, but I didnât have reliable bodyguards.
From what I had seen, one of Ryanâs men could handle five Bobs without breaking a sweat.
Surprisingly, he was accommodating. âAlright.â
I breathed a silent sigh of relief, wanting to explain, âAbout the online rumors⦠it really wasnât me.â
âI already know. Itâs the Smith familyâs doing.â
He said calmly, for once in a rare moment, âIâm sorry for misunderstanding you.â
I smirked. âItâs fine, itâs not like itâs the first time youâve misunderstood me.â
âDo you have time now?â
âWhatâs up?â
âCan you come to the office?â
Ryanâs tone was slightly cold and serious. âI want to discuss⦠Laurenâs matter in person. Normally, I should come to you, but you know the current situation, Iâm a little caught up.â
I realized it must be about the video that surfaced yesterday, showing Jessica and Lauren being filmed by passersby.
I pursed my lips. âAlright, Iâll come over now.â
