Chapter 169
âSo, youâre afraid that the truth about his motherâs death would upset him again?â
âYes.â Albert nodded. âThe psychologist suggested taking it slow, waiting until Mr. Frostâs condition
improves.â
âGot it.â
I replied calmly, not feeling any other emotions. In fact, if it werenât for Grandfatherâs dying instructions, I wouldnât even want to deal with the Frost familyâs affairs.
However, when I returned home and thought about Ryanâs plight, I couldnât help but feel a trace of⦠pity.
But soon, remembering how he had shouted at me in the ward, that pitiful trace of pity vanished
completely.
I suddenly hated myself a bit, hated that I was always unable to come up with a foolproof plan.
Lying bored on the sofa, Jane suddenly arrived.
I opened the door. âWhy didnât you just use your fingerprint to get in?â
âwas afraid I might see something I shouldnât.â
Jane twisted her slender waist, entered gracefully, kicked off her heels, slipped into her own pair of house slippers, glanced at me, and got straight to the point. âWhy so down?â
âToday, I was going to continue to try driving Jessica out of the country.â
I tossed her a bottle of juice, settled back into the sofa, and chuckled selfâdeprecatingly. âBut unexpectedly, I ended up stirring up trouble instead.â
âYou sound so educated today.â Jane unscrewed the cap, walked over with a smile. âToo bad I donât understand. Can you be more direct and clear?â
âToday, Jessicaâs mother woke up.â I sighed. âOriginally, I could have presented evidence that her mother killed Ryanâs mother and successfully sent Jessica abroad.â
âUnfortunately, it didnât work out.â
I explained the whole story briefly to her.
âYouâre doing great. Not only did you fail to send the young bitch away, but now an old bitch has shown up.
Rolling her eyes, Jane drank some juice, snorted coldly. âBut itâs no surprise that Ryan doesnât believe you.
âWhy?â
âWhen has he ever believed you?â
Janeâs rhetorical question left me speechless.
It seemed like never.
I decided not to say anything more. After a while, I finally realized that Janeâs mood today wasnât quite
1/2
right either.
Normally, she would have cursed Jessica out loud upon hearing about this.
Today, she was acting strangely.
I got up and looked over, noticing her reddened eyes. âWhat happened? Why are you about to cry?â
She didnât hide anything, saying frankly, âTom is going to get engaged.â
âWith a wealthy young lady.â

She lay back on the sofa, tears falling freely, âCharlotte, I donât want to like him anymore. I hate myself for ever liking him. He told me that it doesnât matter if he gets married. He and his wife can still live their own lives.â
âTurns out, in his heart, I can be his mistress. Itâs ridiculousâ¦â
Upon hearing this, my heart skipped a beat as well. I handed her a tissue to wipe away her tears, âYes, letâs not like him anymore. Weâre so beautiful and smart, Jane. We waste time on him.â
âThatâs right!â She nodded vigorously, taking the tissue from me and wiping her eyes vigorously, then perked up again. âCharlotte, come with me for a drink?â
âSure.â
After all, I had nothing better to do now.
She drove, taking me to the bar she frequently visited.
As the night fell and the streetlights came on in early winter, there was an inexplicable desolation with a hint of warmth.
âStop the car!â As we were about to reach the bar, passing by a fiveâstar hotel, I suddenly spoke up.
Jane slowed the car down, pulling over to the side of the road. âWhatâs wrong?â
âThose two peopleâ¦â
I stared at the entrance of the hotel where a couple who had been affectionate earlier was now arm in arm, walking inside. âThey look like my fatherâinâlaw and Jessica!â
