Chapter 109
Just like my marriage with Ryan, after three full years of living together day and night, being close companions, we could sever ties with just a few suitcases.
âMs. Wilson.â
At noon, Nancy knocked and entered, holding her brightly lit phone with a complex expression, hesitating as she spoke, âSo⦠you know my idol?â
I knew she meant Jack and smiled. âYes, didnât I tell you before? He and I were classmates in university.â
âWhen did he return to the country?â
âJust recently.â
As I packed things up, I replied, âI was thinking after things have settled, Iâll introduce you to
him.
Î
âWerenât you both going to a concert together? Why didnât you invite me?â
âWhat are you talking about?â
I instinctively explained, âI was stood up that day and happened to run into him at the entrance, so we watched the concert together.â
âReally?â
Seeing her unusual expression, I couldnât help but ask, âReally. Whatâs wrong?â
âNothing, just saw something on the forum, thought maybe you and him we close.â
She immediately smiled and asked, âSo when are you free to introduce us?â
âIn a while. He just started at the MS Group not long ago. Heâs probably busy.â I was mentally and physically exhausted too.
âOkay.â
She responded somewhat dejectedly, noticing my actions as I packed. âAre youâ¦â
âIâm resigning.â
I paused in my actions, Jooking at her. âBut Jessica probably wonât come to the company during this time. Even if she does, itâll be to the CEOâs office. No one will trouble you, so donât
worry.â
âArenât you taking me with you?â
âI want to take a break for a while.â

Suppressing a dull pain in my abdomen, I spoke softly, âOnce I find a new jobâ¦â âOkay, Ms. Wilson, I understand.â
She abruptly interrupted me, her tone stiff, and turned and walked out.
Whatâs gotten into her today?
Before I could ponder further, the phone on the table suddenly
Bob Lynch.
I looked at the caller ID, somewhat surprised. âHello, Uncle Bob.â
For the years that I lived at Aunt Lauraâs house, and Uncle Bob and Aunt Laura quarreled a lot. After going to university, I never lived there again.
To avoid his displeasure, I either sent gifts during festivals when he wasnât home or ordered online.
I never expected him to call me.
âYour Aunt Laura has fallen ill.â
Bob dropped this bombshell, then added, âWeâre at the St. Heart Hospital. Come over as soon as you can.â
I was stunned for a moment. âOkay, Iâll be right there.â
When I arrived at the hospital, both Bob and my cousin Bradley Lynch were there, and Aunt was lying on the hospital bed.
Seeing me, Aunt seemed surprised and glared at Bob. âDidnât I tell you? Donât disturb Charlotte. She has her own life!â
âItâs not like that.â
Bob sat with his legs crossed in a chair. âOur family raised her for so many years. Now that youâre ill, she should come and see you, morally speaking.â
âThe child slept on a cold balcony in winter and a hot one in summer, and dared not touch a piece of meat at meals. Do you have no shame to say you raised her?â
âI didnât let her die outside. She should repay us!â Bob shook his leg, the keys on his waist jingling.
I pursed my lips. âAunt, Uncle is right. I should come to see you.â
âHeâs full of crap.â Aunt was different from before, speaking angrily. âShe lived on the balcony for a few years and you got a millionâdollar dowry from her, plus a monthly allowance. You still want her to repay you? Is that balcony made of gold?!â
âLaura, you donât know whatâs good for you. I called her here for whom? For you! If she doesnât come, the hospital will throw you out tomorrow!â
Bob was getting agitated too, standing up and looking at me as if it had nothing to do with him. âStomach cancer. The doctor said we need 60 or 100 thousand dollars for treatment options, and we need to decide.â
