A rude streak of sunlight cut across my face, waking me the next morning. The first thing that popped into my head was the memory of Wilder in my kitchen, holding the wedding dress heâd bought. I smiled as I turned to say good morning, but the spot next to me on the bed was empty, and the sheet was cold. So I wrapped the blanket around myself and went searching for Wilder. I found him at the kitchen table, shirtless with a cup of coffee, nose buried in a book.
âLet me guess which one youâre reading.â
He grinned. âI mightâve dog-eared a few pages.â
I chuckled. âWhat time is it?â
âAlmost ten.â
âWow. I had my alarm set for nine. I mustâve slept right through it.â
âI turned it off. You didnât get enough sleep last night.â
âI think itâs more like you kept me up half the night.â
Wilder pulled me onto his lap. âYou didnât seem to object.â
âI couldnât. Your tongue was in my mouth.â
He buried his face in my neck. âMy tongue was a lot of other places, too.â
That it was. My belly fluttered, thinking about the way heâd made me feel last night. âHow long have you been up?â
âA few hours. I went to the grocery store to get some things for breakfast. Your fridge was pretty bleak.â
âI havenât been hungry lately.â
Wilder ran his nose up and down my neck. âIâm starving.â
I got the feeling weâd just changed subjects. âIs that so?â
I wouldâve been happy to go back to bed. Surprisingly, it was Wilder who put the brakes on things. He kissed the tip of my nose. âI saw your brother this morning.â
Uh-oh. âWhich one?â
âWill.â
âSorry.â I closed my eyes. âI shouldâve warned you that I told him. How did that conversation go?â
âSame way it wouldâve if I had a little sister who got knocked up by a guy with a reputation, and he didnât do the right thing off the bat.â
âShit.â My shoulders slumped. âThat well, huh?â
Wilder brushed hair from my face and smiled. âItâs all good. Heâll come around when heâs ready. Iâm glad heâs protective of you. I wouldnât want it any other way.â
I guessed I should be happy no one had a black eye. âI need to tell Travis and my dad still. And Olivia.â
âIâd like to tell my dad when youâre ready, too.â
âOh God.â I had completely forgotten that Wilderâs dad was Mr. Hayesâthe CEO of the company I worked for. âMy job. I wasnât even thinking of that.â
âThereâs no rush.â Wilder ran his hands up and down my arms. âBut I would like to go with you when you tell your father, if thatâs alright.â
âHe likes you, but Iâm not sure how heâll take the news. He and my brothers still treat me like Iâm twelve in a lot of ways.â
âThey need to see that Iâm going to be here for you. Telling them isnât enough.â
I nodded and let out an audible breath. âOkay. Weâll tell him together. He works at the bar on Sundays, and itâs usually pretty busy because of games and races. How long are you staying?â
Wilder looked me in the eyes. âForever.â
My pulse picked up. âWhat do you mean? Arenât you going back to England?â
âIâll keep an office there, but my life is here. I think itâs time I moved back.â
âWow. Okay.â
âI think I might have found the perfect place, too.â
âReally? Where?â
He patted my ass. âHow about you get dressed while I make breakfast, and Iâll show you. I have an appointment to see the place at eleven.â
I couldnât believe the last twenty-four hours. After weeks of dragging, I felt like I was floating. I was still scared, nervous that things might turn sour, but at least those feelings were balanced with excitement and happiness. Only time would tell how things would turn out. But I had hope again.
I took a quick shower and got dressed, then stuffed my face with the ridiculous feast Wilder had cooked for breakfast.
âDo we need to get going?â I piled my dish in the sink. âYou said your appointment was at eleven. Are we taking the train? The subway has reduced service on the weekends.â
Wilder smiled. âYouâll see.â
A few minutes later, we were out the door. On the street, we turned left, so I assumed we were heading to the C train up the block.
But Wilder stopped a few steps into our walk. âWeâre here.â
I squinted. âHere where?â
He pointed to the brownstone next door to my brotherâs. Iâd noticed the small FOR SALE sign a few weeks ago, but didnât pay it much attention. A real estate agent opened the front door and smiled.
Wilder laced his fingers with mine. âI need a place to live other than a hotel, and I want to be near you. Eventually, weâll need more space for the baby. I figured you wouldnât want to move too far from Olivia.â He shrugged. âSaw the sign this morning, and it seemed like the perfect solution. I know youâre probably not ready to move in with me. I have a lot to do to earn back your trust. Until then, Iâll be close enough to be there when you need me, but youâll still have your space.â
âYouâre really going to move here from London? Your home has been there for ten years. I donât want you to make any rash decisions.â
âMy home is where you are, Sloane. And this decision isnât rash for me. Iâve wanted nothing but to be with you since the day I met you.â
I looked over at the brownstone. It was as big or bigger than my brotherâs. âWhat would you do with this much house? Rent the floors?â
Wilder shook his head. âThe real estate agent said it needs some fixing up. But Iâd make it into one big house. Between the baby and Lucas, who will probably visit more often than weâd like, weâre going to need space. Plus, Iâm hoping weâll fill some of the extra rooms with more kids someday. Iâd love a family like you have, with everyone close in age. Lucas is sixteen years younger than me, so I pretty much grew up an only childâbouncing from one parentâs house to the other. I like what you guys have. It feels right.â
My chest filled with warmth. Yet there were still those nerves. A part of me was afraid to believe this was real.
Wilder mustâve seen the doubt in my face, though Iâd thought Iâd hid it well. He pulled me in tight. âEventually it wonât be so scary. I promise.â He nodded toward the brownstone. âCome on. Letâs go see where Iâm going to live.â
Later that night, I was lying in bed while Wilder finished up a call.
âThanks, buddy.â He tossed his cell on the end table and slipped into bed next to me. âThey accepted my counteroffer.â
âOh my God. So thatâs it? The house is yours?â
He nodded. âAfter a shitload of paperwork, but Andrew will take care of that.â
âWow. I canât believe how fast that happened.â
âSometimes you get lucky and something perfect falls into your lap.â He ran his thumb over my bottom lip. âLike you.â
âI didnât quite fall into your lap. More like you pulled me into the coat closet.â
He smiled. âSemantics.â
âWell, congratulations.â
âThank you. Back at ya.â
âMe? I didnât just buy a house.â
âActually you did. I told Andrew to put the house in both our names.â
âWhat? No. You canât do that.â
âOf course I can.â
âI didnât mean you canâtâI meant you shouldnât do that.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause ⦠this is still new, Wilder.â
âWhatâs new?â
I motioned between us. âUs. The pregnancy. Things can happen.â
Wilderâs face fell. âAre you afraid to be tied to me?â
âNo. Thatâs not it at all.â
âThen let me do this. I donât want this to be my house. I want it to be our house. I know what I did made you have doubts. But what I was scared of was never you, Sloane. I was afraid I wasnât enough for you.â
âYou are enoughâ¦â
Wilder brushed his lips with mine. âThen let me make this commitment. To us. To our family. Please.â
âItâs still so early in the pregnancy. What happens ifâ¦â
âI loved you before I knew you were pregnant. Whatever happens happens. But weâll always have each other.â
I inhaled deeply, blowing out with a nod. âOkay.â
He flashed a cocky smile, like he knew all along heâd win. âThank you.â
This man was dangerous. I was pretty sure he could get me to do anything he asked with a little begging and that grin. âYou know, Iâm not always going to be that easy.â
âNo?â He reached over and took my hand, bringing it between his legs. âIâll always be this hard for you.â
We both laughed. âI walked right into that one, didnât I?â
Wilder climbed on top of me, hovering. âI love you, Cupcake.â
My heart felt so full. âI love you, too.â
