âWhatever you did, weâll fix it.â Andrew slid onto the stool next to me.
I raised my hand to order another drink, though Iâd already had one too many, and shook my head. âI donât think even you can get me out of this mess.â
âWell, you got me out of bed at three in the morning. So why donât you clue me in on what weâre talking about and let me be the judge of that.â
I deadpanned at my friend. âI told Sloane I loved her earlier tonight.â
âSo? How the hell does that equate toâ¦â He dug his cell from his pocket and swiped to open, reading the text Iâd sent him an hour ago. ââI fucked up. I royally fucked up.â Does that mean you donât love her? Did it come out during sex? Iâve done that before. Some orgasms affect our brain, man.â
I sucked back the rest of my whiskey. âNo, we were on the dance floor at a wedding, and I love her. I love her more than anything Iâve ever loved.â
âMore than that ratty purple bear you carried around until you were like seven and I know you still have somewhere, even though you deny it?â
I sighed. âWay more than Mr. Bongo.â
âSo whatâs the problem?â
âDidnât you hear me? I fell in love.â
âSo? Itâs not a deadly virus. It wonât kill you.â
âIt almost did last time.â
âWhen were you ever in love?â
âI loved my high school girlfriend and my motherâboth of whom died. And then thereâs Whitney.â
âYou never loved Whitney.â
âI loved our baby.â
Andrew smiled sadly. âI know you did, man. But this is different.â
âNo, itâs not.â I met his eyes. âSloaneâs pregnant.â
My friendâs shoulders slumped. âOh fuck.â
The bartender walked over. I ordered a refill, and Andrew ordered a vodka seltzer. Neither of us said a word until we had our drinks and were a few sips in.
Eventually, it was Andrew who spoke. âWhat did you say when she told you?â
âNothing. I took off like a fucking coward. Last night was another wedding. I left her standing on the damn dance floor. Didnât even say goodbye to the bride or groom.â
âDick move, but okay. Youâll apologize. Grovel. Do you think she loves you back?â
âShe said she did.â
âThen sheâll forgive you. Look at meâI did something much worse to Camille, and sheâs giving me another chance. You acted like an idiot. Sloane will get over it.â He smirked. âShe should probably get used to it if sheâs going to be around a while.â
I shook my head. âIâm not sure I can do it.â
âYou gotta trust someone again sometime, Wilder.â
I sucked back my drink. It burned going down. Iâd never liked liquor much. âWho says?â
âWell, I suppose you donât. But then you stand to lose the woman you love and your child. I guess you have to make a decision. Whatâs scarierâthe thought of taking a chance and maybe being let down again, or the thought of losing Sloane and the baby?â
