TEN YEARS AGO
âIâm so bored.â Whitney sighed.
Sheâd been swiping through social media reels for the last hour, starting and stopping catchy little tunes as I tried to study, so it was on the tip of my tongue to say something snarky. But then I looked over at her propped-up feet and swollen ankles and felt bad. I closed my textbook. âWhat do you feel like doing?â
Her eyes lit up. âLetâs go shopping.â
âAgain?â
She rubbed her swollen belly and pouted. âWe need a lot of things.â
It would be easier to finish studying when she went home later anyway. The sounds from her phone were too distracting to concentrate.
I offered my hand to help her up, then pulled her against me once she was standing and wiggled my brows. âUnless youâd rather do something elseâ¦â
She frowned. âItâs hard to be in the mood when youâre fat.â
âYouâre not fat. Youâre five months pregnant.â I squeezed her ass. âAnd I think youâre sexy this way.â
She rolled her eyes. âLetâs just go to the mall.â
Whatever. We hadnât had sex or even fooled around in at least a month, but she was going through a lot with hormone and body changesâchanges I didnât have to go through, so I didnât complain. Though her excuse that she felt fat or ugly felt flimsy when she liked herself enough to buy a new wardrobe and makeup every week. But maybe I was just cranky from studying and listening to the player announcements for the England rugby teamâannouncements that would no longer include my name for next season.
Two hours later, my mood wasnât much better as I carried a half-dozen department store bags through the mall, trailing behind Whitney. At least her spirits seemed higher. We stopped in the food court, and I got us each a big pretzel. I suggested she brush off the salt since her ankles were swollen, but that didnât go over well. When Whit and I had first gotten together, everything was easy. Weâd seemed to agree on most things. We had sex all the time and didnât argue. She almost always had a smile on her face. But that had changed over the last few months, and I was beginning to wonder if it was the pregnancy or if we didnât get to know each other well enough and hadnât made it past the honeymoon phase in our relationship until now.
Whitney finished her pretzel and crumpled up the wax paper it had been served on. âLetâs go to Sephora and then Baby Gap.â
Weâd just gone to the makeup store a week ago, and I couldnât remember the last time sheâd even worn makeup. Yet I bit my tongue again and stood. âSure.â
The line at the cash register was a mile long, so I got in it while she finished shopping. On our way out, I noticed a guy standing in front of the store, directly across the way. He looked familiar, and it seemed like he was watching us. Iâd noticed him earlier, too, when we were at the food court. But I chalked it up to a guy checking out Whitney. Pregnant or not, she turned heads. I lifted my chin, gesturing across the way.
âDo you know that guy?â
She looked over, but the guy had already started walking. âNo. But letâs go.â
âI thought you wanted to go to Baby Gap?â
âMy feet are too swollen.â
I wasnât about to complain. I hated the damn mall. Though in hindsight, maybe her not wanting to finish maxing out my card at the mall again shouldâve been a hint that something was off.
âWill you rub my feet before you go?â
I needed to get home and study, but ten minutes more wouldnât kill me. Whitneyâs studio apartment wasnât much bigger than my dorm room, and it was packed with crap, piles everywhere. I took a box of shoes and some unopened mail from the couch and patted the seat next to me. Her head drooped as I lifted her feet onto my lap and dug my thumbs into the ball of her right foot.
âDid you talk to your parents about dinner next week yet?â I asked.
She sighed. âMy dadâs too sick for that.â
âI thought you said he was feeling better?â
âHe was for a little while, but heâs not now.â
âMaybe heâll feel better by next weekend?â
âI doubt it.â
My father was coming into town and wanted to meet Whitneyâs family. Sheâd already met my family twice, and they werenât the ones who lived locally. I hadnât met either of her parents or her brother yet. Come to think of it, the only friend Iâd met of hers was Ashley, who weâd run into at the mall.
âIâd like to meet them before the baby comesâ¦â
She pushed my hand from her feet. âI canât help it if he doesnât feel well. Chemotherapy isnât easy, you know.â
My brows knitted. âI thought you said heâd finished his treatment.â
âI didnât say that.â
I was pretty certain she had, because sheâd said it the day after my motherâs last round of chemo. And I remembered commenting about the timing. âAre you sure?â
âOf course Iâm sure.â She stood. âCan we not talk about cancer? Itâs upsetting for me to think about.â
Iâd learned a lot about Whitney these last few months, the most important tidbit being that she had a tell when she lied. She talked faster than usual and tried to change the subject or walk away as quickly as possibleâexactly like she was doing now. I was just about to call her on it, when she grabbed her stomach.
âOh my God.â
I jumped up. âWhat?â
She smiled. âI felt the baby move.â
âReally?â
She reached for my hand and set it on the lower part of her belly. âHere. Letâs see if it happens again.â
We were both quiet for a few minutes, but I didnât feel anything. Then all of a sudden, I didâa subtle shift beneath my fingersâalmost like a small ball rolling, pushing against her skin. My eyes widened. âI felt it!â
âIsnât it wild?â
Iâd had five months for it to sink in that Whitney was carrying my child, and I was going to be a father. I thought it had. But something changed in that momentâand it hit me hard. Iâm going to be a dad. Soon.
I looked down at my hand on her belly with a sense of wonderment. âThatâs our baby.â
She laughed. âNo shit, Sherlock.â
I swallowed. âWe need to find a place to live. A house with a yard.â
âUs? You mean move in together?â
I nodded. âShouldnât we? Weâre going to be a family.â
Whitney smiled. âIâll start looking tomorrow.â
