TEN YEARS AGO
âI canât freaking believe it.â My buddy Andrew shook his head. âWhen did you find out?â
âA week ago.â
âDidnât you use protection?â
I raked a hand through my hair. âWe did at first. But we werenât seeing anyone else, and sheâs on the pill.â
âIsnât that thing supposed to be like ninety-nine percent effective?â
I blew out two cheeks full of air. âIâve always been an overachiever.â
âWhat are you going to do? Youâre leaving for England in a few months.â
âNot anymore.â
Andrewâs eyes bulged. âWhat? Itâs all youâve talked about since we were kids. Playing for England is your dream.â
âIâll postpone. Or Iâll play here in the US. Itâs not too late to qualify for next yearâs draft in the MLR.â
âYou know thatâs not the same thing. Rugby here is shit. You might as well play professional Ping-Pong.â
I frowned. âItâs growing fast.â
He shook his head. âName one player here who has a seven-figure endorsement.â
Of course I couldnât. Not here anyway. England? New Zealand? South Africa? Definitely. But the sport didnât make household names and faces in the US. âYou know I donât need the money.â
âI know. But donât you want to play against the best? In a stadium full of eighty thousand people?â
Thatâs what hurt the most. I didnât mind not making money. My father had enough to last generations. But I wanted to be the best, and in order to be the best, you had to play against the best. There wasnât a player from the United States ranked in the top fifty. It sucked. But what the hell was I going to do? My girlfriend was pregnant. I couldnât move to another country right before she was about to give birth.
Andrew sighed. âDo you love her at least?â
âI havenât been with anyone else in four months.â
He frowned. âThatâs not a yes. That could mean sheâs a great lay.â
I pointed. âWatch it.â
âSeriously, Wilder. This is a big fucking dealâchanging your entire life for someone. Do you love her or not?â
âIâm content.â
âIâm content when I sit on my grandmotherâs couch and she makes me her homemade gnocchi. Doesnât mean I want her to have my baby and uproot my entire life.â
I raked a hand through my hair. âDoesnât matter what I want now. Because itâs happening. Weâre having a kid.â
