An hour later, I was resting my elbows on the sticky wooden bar of the Golden Shamrock. Sipping a Guinness while the TV blared, I watched , a reality TV show about women competing to win a groom and plastic surgery for their Big Day. Horrific, yes, but that didnât stop me from tuning in every week.
Maybe that heralded the decline of civilization or something, but none of that really bothered me right now. I was twenty-six years old, withâ¦
What did I have? Nothing, really. Nothing to my name.
Tonight, I just wanted a place where no one would give a shit about the curry stains on my shirt, a place where I could drink a lot on a weeknight and no one would judge me.
The Golden Shamrock was the perfect spot.
It wasnât just the heartbreak, although that did make me want to curl into the fetal position. This had ruined another of my dreams, at least temporarilyâChloeâs. Iâd been working day and night on my plans, trying to get permits.
I dropped my head into my hands. I made about thirty thousand a year as a bartender right now, and much of that had gone to Andrewâs mortgage. Before Iâd met Andrew, Iâd been sharing a cramped apartment with an alcoholic who always fell asleep in the bathroom. That wasnât the end of the world, but something really rankled about the way Andrew had just tossed out âgo to collegeâ as if I could suddenly pay for it.
Andrew had grown up rich, with parents who earned millions in real estate. Heâd decided to make it on his own for a while, which I guess meant I was helping him instead of his parents. Because heâd never truly been broke, heâd cultivated the sort of blithe obliviousness that would lead him to say things like, âYou should be happy Iâm in love,â in the process of shattering several of my dreams.
I sipped my Guinness, licking the foam off my lips. Iâd find a way to make it work.
A familiar voice pulled me from my misery. âAva!â
When I looked up, I saw my best friend Shalini crossing toward me. Her dark, wavy hair cascaded over a figure-hugging red dress that matched her lipstick. She wore shimmery blush over her copper skin, her style in sharp contrast to my food-stained work ensemble.
Shalini slid in next to me and immediately wrapped an arm around my shoulders. âOh, my God, Ava. What happened?â
All the emotions Iâd been holding back came flooding out then, and I dropped my head into my hands. âI caught Andrew having sex in our bed with a blonde .â When I looked up again at her, my vision had gone blurry.
Shaliniâs brown eyes were wide, her jaw tight. âAre you fucking kidding me?â
I sipped my beer, feeling numb now. âHe said he had a hall pass.â
âA pass? Whatâs that?â
I drew in a deep breath and told Shalini everything that had happened: coming home early, the fake orgasm, and then the bit about how I should be happy for him. When I finished, Shaliniâs expression of utter disgust mirrored my own feelings. Then a smile curled her lips. âYou really threw vindaloo on them?â
âIt was everywhere.â
âI hope he got chili peppers on his ballsââ Shalini paused for a second, then grimaced. She was probably trying to imagine what curry might look like all over Andrewâs naked body. Shaking her head, she said, âItâs unbelievable. I mean, did he really think he wasnât going to get caught?
âI donât know. I guess so. I was supposed to be working late, but itâs my birthday.â My cheeks were wet, and I wiped my hands across them. âI know most relationships donât last, but I thought we were different.â
Shalini gently patted my shoulder. âThe cure for a broken heart is a hotter man. Are you on Tinder yet?â
I stared at her. âThis just happened an hour and a half ago.â
âRight. Well, when youâre ready, Iâm going to help you. Iâm basically desperate for an adventure. Maybe we should go on a cruise! Arenât there cruises for single people?â
I looked down at my now nearly empty glass. Was this my second beer or my third? I was losing count. âNo way. Iâm done with men. I can be perfectly happy with donuts and movies about Tudor queens.â
âWait a minute. Wasnât he supposed to finance your bar?â Shaliniâs voice rose. âYouâve been paying his fucking mortgage. He you.â
I nodded. âAnd thatâs probably why he was waiting to tell me.â
âWhat if I invested in your bar?â
It was a lovely thing to say, but I didnât want to ruin a perfect friendship by throwing a steep financial risk into the mix. âNo, but thank you. Iâll figure something out.â
âWe could open one together. One of the ones where you can throw axes? And maybe we should invite Andrew to opening night, have some shots, and see where the blades take us.â
I nodded over my beer. âWe could call it âTap that Axe.ââ
âRemember when Andrew brought that hatchet thing camping and nearly decapitated a squirrel? What a fucking idiot,â said Shalini. âYou need an alpha male. Like, someone who can protect you.â
I swayed in my seat. âEw. No, I donât need some alpha twat. I just need to figure out how to get rent money together.â I gripped the table. âHow dumb am I, exactly, that I trusted him?â
She shrugged. âYouâre not dumb. Heâs the one who ruined something good.â
I leaned back in my chair. âWhatâs the rent like these days downtown?â
She cleared her throat. âLetâs not talk about that now. You can stay with me.â
âOkay.â I nodded. âThat actually sounds kind of fun.â
A slim guy with brown hair sidled up to us. He was wearing black Chucks, jeans, and a gray hoodie. His attention was riveted entirely on Shaliniâwhich was how it always went when we ventured out together.
âHaving a good night?â he asked, flicking his eyebrows up. He clearly intended the expression to be flirty.
âSheâs not,â said Shalini.
âMaybe I can make you feel better,â he replied, his comment entirely directed at Shalini. âWhere are you from? I speak three languages.â
âArlington, Massachusetts.â
âNo, I mean likeâ¦where are you from? Originally.â
âArlington.â Shaliniâs eyes narrowed. âHow about a little French?
!â
The man laughed nervously. âThatâs not one of the languages I know.â
âDo you know programming languages? How about thisâ
?â
The manâs eyes brightened with excitement. âI will if you tell me the admin password.â His tone sounded faintly lascivious, and I no longer understood what was happening.
My gaze drifted to . The groom had forced his potential brides into a boxing match. Apparently, the best way to choose a wife was to have them punch each other while wearing bikinis. I frowned at the screen, wondering how many of them really would need a new nose after this episode.
When I turned back to Shalini and the random guy, they were arguing about a programming language.
Shalini was absolutely brilliant with computers. Sheâd been working for some fancy tech startup that had gone public a month ago. I wasnât sure how much money sheâd made with her stock options, but whatever it was, she no longer needed a job. Once, sheâd been an obsessive academic, insanely driven, but she was burned out, and she just wanted to have fun.
Shalini held up a hand. âSteve, Ava has had a bad night. Sheâs not a fan of men right now. Weâre going to need some space.â
And this was where I made a crucial mistake. âItâs just that I caught my boyfriend banging Ashley.â
Steve bit his lip. âIf you guys want a threesome, orâ¦â
âNo!â said Shalini and I in unison.
âWhatever.â Steveâs face hardened as he looked at me. âNot trying to be a dick, but youâre not really that pretty, anyway. Not with the elf ears.â He sauntered away, humming to himself.
âFae!â I turned back to Shalini, touching my delicately pointed fae ears. âShit. That didnât help my self-esteem.â
âYou know tons of men say shit like that when theyâre rejected, right? One second, youâre the most beautiful person theyâve ever seen. The next, youâre a stuck-up bitch with weird knees. Everyone knows that fae ears are hot, and so are you. Youâre just intimidating.â
Iâd lived among the humans, tried to blend in. Iâd like to say it was by choice, but the truth was, the fae had kicked me out long ago. No idea why.
âIs that what all human men think when they see me?â I asked.
Shalini shook her head. âYouâre fucking gorgeous. Dark brown hair, big eyes, sexy lips. Youâre like a little fae Angelina Jolie from the â90s. And your ears are hot as fuck. You know what? Iâm making it my lifeâs mission to get myself a fae boyfriend. Human men are messy.â
I grimaced. âAnd fae men are terrifying.â
âHow do you know that?â
A dark memory swept through the back of my mind, but it was intangible, elusiveâa wispy phantom in my thoughts. âI donât know. There are a few common fae like me out here, but I donât run into them often. All the High Fae live in Faerie, and I think they have magical powers. But in any case, you can only get into their world through a portal, and that requires an invitation, which Iâm certainly not getting.â
âWhat do you imagine the males would be like in bed, though?â
âIâve literally never thought about it.â
She pointed at me. âHave you ever noticed that the most mind-blowing sex is with the worst trainwrecks of men? The best sex I ever had was with a guy who believed that aliens live in the Earthâs core. He lived in a yurt in his parentsâ backyard, and his only job was trying to make kombucha. Which he never managed, by the way. His shoes were held together with duct tape. Mind blowing sex in the yurt, and thatâs how I know there is no God. Who was yours?â
âBest sex?â My first instinct was to say Andrew, but no, that wasnât the truth. And I didnât have to be loyal to him anymore. âHis name was Dennis. On our first date, he served me cold soup out of a can and tried to beat box for a solid fifteen minutes. He ate weed brownies for breakfast and wanted to be a professional magician. But his body was absolute perfection, and he was insane in bed. In a good way.â
Shalini nodded sympathetically. âExactly. Itâs too cruel. Is it possible that fae men could be good in bed also normal?â
âFuck knows. Iâm pretty sure theyâre all arrogant, and I think kind of murdery? But Iâm not even in the fae world.â This was something I never talked about, but all the beer had loosened me up.
âWhy not? You never explained it to me.â
I leaned forward. âThe fae world is all about your family lineage. And since my parents gave me up for adoption at birth, no one knows what my lineage is. Iâm an outcast.â I looked down at myself, seeing what others must see. âShalini, Iâm not doing much better than Dennis, am I? Iâm broke and currently wearing a cat sweatshirt covered in food stains.â I reached up to touch my hair, realizing that I had one of those buns with hair sticking out. âOh, God. This is what I looked like to meet Ashley.â
âYou look sexier than ever. You look like someone kept you up all night because youâre hot as hell.â Her eyes moved to my now empty pint glass. âAnother round?â
I nodded, even though I already felt dizzy. I could still hear Ashleyâs high-pitched squeals, and those had to go.
âMore,â I said slowly, and sighed. âThanks. Andrew was too good-looking. Too perfect. I should have known better than to trust a man who was so pretty.â
Shalini shouted to the bartender, âCan we get a pitcher of margaritas? And can you turn up ? Someoneâs getting sent home tonight.â
âI hope itâs Amberlee,â I said. âNo, wait. I hope she stays. Sheâs batshit, and that makes her my favorite. She tried to curse Jennica with a curse candle.â
As the bartender filled the pitcher, a âbreaking newsâ logo flashed on the TV above the bar, interrupting the video of a contestant drunkenly sobbing. A news reporter was standing on a street corner.
I stared at the screen.
âItâs just been announced,â said the grinning reporter, âthat Torin, king of the fae, will be getting married this year.â
A hush fell over the bar. King Torin was the leader of the High Fae, a lethal group of fae who now ruled our world from a distance. Exactly the type of fae who wanted nothing to do with a commoner like me.
And yet, I found myself staring at the TV anyway, enraptured along with everyone else.
