Crystal woke with a jolt, her neck cramping in protest as she lifted her head from the unforgiving stone floor. For one blissful moment, she thought she was back in her car, parked behind the gym in Oregon. Then reality crashed in as she blinked at the cave walls surrounding her.
"Not a dream then," she muttered, wincing as she pushed herself up to sitting.
Every muscle in her body complained as she stretched. The damp cave floor had done her no favorsâher back felt like someone had replaced her spine with a rusted metal rod. Crystal rolled her shoulders and twisted her torso, hearing several satisfying pops as her joints realigned.
Morning light spilled through the cave entrance, illuminating the space in a soft golden glow. The storm had passed, leaving behind that peculiar jungle freshnessâearthy and sweet and utterly foreign to her Pacific Northwest senses.
Crystal glanced toward the spot where Spohr had sat down the previous day. The Myconari remained there, perfectly still, his cap tilted downward as if in deep sleep. Bioluminescent speckles pulsed softly across his skin in hypnotic patterns.
After putting away her bedtime objects, Crystal turned to grab her backpack and froze. The spot where she'd left it was empty.
"What theâ" Crystal scrambled to her feet, ignoring the protest of her stiff muscles. She scanned the cave floor, checking behind rocks and in shadows. Nothing. Her heart rate quickened.
"This can't be happening," she muttered, dropping to her knees to look under a low rock shelf. "First, I get transported to mushroom-man land, and now I'm being robbed?"
Crystal moved to the cave entrance, searching the ground outside for any sign of her belongings. The jungle floor was a carpet of wet leaves and mud, any footprints washed away by the night's rain. She circled the immediate area, pushing aside ferns and peering into dense undergrowth.
"Come on, come on," she whispered, frustration building in her chest. "Where is it?"
Behind her, a soft rustling sound drew her attention. Crystal turned to see Spohr's body straightening, his cap tilting upward as consciousness returned to his form. The bioluminescent patterns shifted from slow, rhythmic pulses to a more active, dancing light.
"Spohr," Crystal called, hurrying back into the cave. "My backpack is gone. Have you seen it? Did you move it while I was asleep?"
The Myconari tilted his head, dark eyes blinking slowly as if adjusting to consciousness. His fingers flexed and curled, like roots testing soil after a long dormancy.
The puff of familiar psychic spores floated in the air. An image of Crystal holding her backpack yesterday filled her mind's eye.
"Yes, my backpack. The bag I had with me yesterday. It's gone." Crystal gestured to the empty spot where it had been. "I need it. I have food, water, and a first aid kit in there."
Spohr's cap rippled slightly, and a small cloud of luminescent spores drifted from his skin. They swirled in the air between them, forming patterns that somehow conveyed both understanding and resignation.
"'Keth," he murmured. Crystal's system rang with a voice as a notification popped up in the upper right-hand side of her vision.
[New word registered to Myconari vocabulary: 'Keth â danger or a breach]
Then, with what could only be described as an exasperated sighâa soft exhalation that released more glowing sporesâSpohr gestured for her to follow him.
"You know where it is?" Crystal asked, hope rising.
Spohr nodded, his movements more fluid now that he was fully present in his body. "'Huu," he said.
He led her from the cave into the morning jungle. The air hung heavy with moisture, droplets clinging to broad leaves and cascading down in miniature waterfalls when disturbed. Crystal followed Spohr's tall form through a path that seemed to materialize before them, vegetation parting just enough to allow passage.
After several minutes of silent walking, Spohr paused and pointed upward. Crystal followed his gaze to an enormous tree with a trunk wider than her car. Its branches spread like a cathedral ceiling, creating a canopy that filtered the morning sunlight into dappled patterns.
Nestled in the crook of a massive branch, perhaps thirty feet up, was what looked like a small shelter woven from vines and leaves.
"Up there?" Crystal asked, incredulous. "How am I supposed toâ"
Before she could finish, a flash of movement caught her eye. Somethingâor someoneâwas scampering down the trunk with incredible speed and agility. As the figure drew closer, Crystal could make out a small, furry form with a long, prehensile tail.
It wasn't human, but it wasn't like Spohr either. This creature moved with mischievous energy, pausing occasionally to peer down at them with bright green eyes that gleamed with unmistakable intelligence. The creature stopped on a branch just fifteen feet above their heads.
And slung across its back, now decorated with colorful feathers and intricate patterns stitched along the seams, was her backpack.
Spohr's bioluminescence pulsed in what Crystal interpreted as resignation. The Myconari's soft voice came out in steady breaths, "Zaan Kaji. Shule suhlaa thaaln."
[New words registered to Myconari Vocabulary: Zaan â Meet or greet. Shule â Young or youth. Thaaln â Trouble or Troublemaker.]
"Great. Soâ¦a young, harmless trickster named Kaji, huh?" Crystal asked, crossing her arms as she stared up at the furry creature.
Spohr's cap tilted in confirmation, spores forming a pattern that somehow conveyed both agreement and wariness. The creatureâKajiâshifted on his branch, tail curling and uncurling with obvious excitement. Now that he was closer, Crystal could see he resembled something between a monkey and a lemur, with tawny brown fur marked by faint turquoise patterns along his arms.
Kaji cocked his head, watching her with those bright green eyes that seemed to evaluate her every movement. He made no move to descend further, instead adjusting her backpack on his shoulders and tracing one of the new feathers he'd attached to it.
"He's not going to give my backpack back if I just ask nicely, is he?" Crystal asked, already knowing the answer.
Spohr slowly shook his head, releasing a small puff of bioluminescent spores that briefly formed a pattern resembling a shrug.
Crystal sighed, thinking back to her years teaching taekwondo. She'd dealt with troublemakers beforeâkids who acted out for attention or took things that didn't belong to them. Her mind drifted to Mateo, a ten-year-old who'd gone through a phase of hiding other students' shoes during class. The breakthrough had come when she'd realized he wasn't maliciousâjust desperate for connection and acknowledgment.
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
"Trading," she murmured to herself. "That worked with Mateo."
Crystal accessed her inventory system, the foggy mental space materializing in her mind's eye. She scrolled through the limited items she'd stored before falling asleepâspare clothes, her medical textbooks, a box of sentimental items. Then she spotted itâa small bag of candy-coated chocolates a graduating student had given her last week. She'd tossed them in her car's backseat, intending to eat them during a study break.
With a simple command, Crystal selected the item, feeling it materialize in her hand as she pulled it from the inventory. The colorful candies rattled in their bag, the sound immediately catching Kaji's attention. His ears perked up, and he leaned forward on his branch, tail swishing with newfound interest.
"Hey, Kaji!" Crystal called up, holding the bag where he could see it. "I'll trade you for my backpack. You know, that bag on your back." She shook the candy bag, making the contents rattle enticingly. "I've got some yummy candy here! I'll give you the whole bag if you give me back my stuff."
Kaji's eyes widened, fixated on the colorful treats. He made a chittering sound, shifting from foot to foot on his branch. His tail flicked rapidly, betraying his excitement, but he made no move to come down.
"Chocolate," Crystal added, opening the bag just enough to let him glimpse the contents. "Sweet. Delicious." She popped one into her mouth, making an exaggerated show of enjoyment. "Mmm!"
Kaji's restraint broke. He scrambled down the tree trunk with astonishing speed, stopping about ten feet away from Crystal. He crouched there, balanced on all fours, eyeing both her and the candy with equal parts suspicion and desire.
"Shiny-pretty bag makes noise-noise," he said suddenly, his voice higher than Crystal expected, with a musical lilt that reminded her of wind chimes. "What's inside, eh? Poison for poor Kaji? Trick-trick for the trickster, eh?"

Crystal blinked in surprise. "You speak English?"
"Speak many things," Kaji replied, inching closer with careful movements. "Words are just air-dancing, eh? Easy to catch, easy to throw back." He tapped his head with one slender finger. "Kaji quick-learns, yes-yes."
He stood upright now, revealing his full height, barely reaching Crystal's chest. Despite his small stature, he carried himself with undeniable confidence, green eyes sparkling with mischief.
"No poison," Crystal assured him, holding out the candy bag. "Just chocolate. Sweet food from my world."
Kaji's nose twitched. "Your world? You're from beyond-beyond? The not-here place?" His excitement visibly grew. "You might be special-special. Kaji wanted to see what strange-stranger carried in her bag." He patted the backpack on his shoulder. "Fixed it for you! Made it better-better with feathers and jungle-threads."
Crystal reached into the bag and pulled out a single candy. The colorful shell gleamed in the dappled sunlight as she held it out on her palm.
"Try one first," she offered. "Then we tradeâthe whole bag for my backpack."
Kaji crept forward, his movements a curious blend of caution and eagerness. He snatched the candy with nimble fingers, bringing it to his nose for a thorough sniff before popping it into his mouth.
The change was instantaneous. His eyes widened to perfect circles, ears perking straight up as his tail went rigid with shock. He froze completely for three heartbeatsâthen erupted into motion, bouncing on his toes and chittering with delight.
"Sweet-magic!" he exclaimed, patting his chest as if to calm his racing heart. "Melty-good in mouth but stays happy-happy in head!" He pointed at the bag with trembling fingers. "All mine for the fixed-up bag? No tricks?"
"No tricks," Crystal confirmed, holding out her hand. "Fair trade."
Without hesitation, Kaji slipped the backpack off his shoulders and thrust it toward her, already reaching for the candy bag with his other hand. The moment their items crossed paths, a notification chimed in Crystal's vision:
[Currency established: Chocolate has been registered as a trade commodity with Simari (Kaji). Current holdings: 2 chocolate bars (Standard), 37 chocolate chips (Fractional)]
Crystal blinked at the unexpected system message while Kaji tore into the candy bag with unbridled enthusiasm. He poured a handful of colorful pieces into his palm, examining each one with reverent attention before selecting his next victim.
She turned her attention to her backpack, running her fingers over the modifications. What had initially looked like random decorations revealed themselves as intricate embroideryâgeometric patterns and stylized leaves stitched with surprising precision. The feathers weren't just stuck on; they'd been carefully woven into reinforced sections of the fabric. Several small tears had been expertly mended, and the worn shoulder strap had been reinforced with braided plant fibers that felt stronger than the original material.
"This is... amazing," Crystal said, genuinely impressed. "You did all this in one night?"
Kaji paused his chocolate feast, cheeks bulging. He swallowed and ducked his head slightly, his earlier bravado momentarily replaced by something that looked remarkably like shyness.
"Just quick-fixes," he mumbled, scratching behind one ear. "Bag was sad-broken. Now happy-strong." His eyes flicked up to meet hers, then darted away. "Kaji good with fingers. Good with fixing."
"Well, thank you," Crystal said, slinging the improved backpack over her shoulder. "It's better than it was before."
Kaji's bashfulness vanished as quickly as it had appeared. He straightened up, tail swishing confidently as he extended his palm toward her.
"If you want more thanks-giving, Kaji accepts more chocolate-treasure," he declared with a cheeky grin. "Always room for more sweet-magic in Kaji's special snack-pouch." He patted a small woven bag tied at his waist.
Spohr, who had been silently observing their exchange, released a small cloud of spores that somehow conveyed exasperation. Crystal couldn't help but laugh at the Myconari's reaction and Kaji's transparent ploy.
"I could, Kaji, but I'd probably run out before the end of the day." Crystal adjusted the newly-improved backpack on her shoulder, watching as the Simari's expression fell dramatically.
"Kreecha know how to make more?" Kaji asked, his green eyes widening with hope. He clutched the half-empty candy bag to his chest like a precious treasure, tail curling anxiously.
[New word registered to Simari vocabulary: Kreecha â Friend, troublemaker, flirt, or prank target. Context dependent]
Crystal chuckled at the new word while looking around at their surroundings. The jungle hummed with lifeâbirds calling, insects buzzing, leaves rustling in the gentle morning breeze. She studied the trees and vegetation for a good minute, eyes narrowing as she took in the unfamiliar plants with new interest.
The dense foliage wasn't like anything she'd seen in Oregon, but some plants bore similarities to species she'd encountered before. A vine with waxy leaves reminded her of something she'd seen in Ecuador during her volunteer work. Several trees bore pod-like fruits that might contain useful oils or fats.
"You know what, Kaji? You're lucky I took a chocolate-making class when I volunteered for Doctors Without Borders." Crystal tapped her chin thoughtfully. "I think I might be able to find similar chocolate ingredients here in the jungle, but I should warn youâthe taste might not be the same as what you're eating now."
Kaji froze mid-chew, staring at her with astonishment. The candy in his mouth forgotten, he swallowed hard and leapt to his feet.
"Jungle-chocolate?" His voice rose an octave with excitement. "Made by handy-hands with jungle-things?" His tail whipped back and forth so quickly it became a blur. "Show Kaji how! Kaji help findâKaji know every plant, every tree!"
Without waiting for her response, he bounded toward a nearby flowering bush with bright red blooms. He pointed at it eagerly, bouncing on his toes.
"Does this make sweet-sweet chocolate?"
Crystal laughed, shaking her head. "Not that one. We need to find something called cacaoâor something similar. It grows in pods on trees." She made a shape with her hands to demonstrate. "The beans inside are what we need."
Spohr, who had been quietly observing their exchange, released a small cloud of spores that drifted toward Crystal. As they dissipated around her, an image formed in her mind: a grove of trees with ridged, oblong pods growing directly from their trunks. The vision was accompanied by a sense of directionâsomewhere deeper in the jungle, perhaps a half-day's journey.
"Spohr knows where to find something similar," Crystal translated, nodding her thanks to the Myconari. "We'll need to gather other ingredients too. Sugar or honey, some kind of fat..."
A notification chimed softly in her vision:
[New Objective Added: Create Muragu Chocolate]
[Sub-tasks: Locate cacao-equivalent pods; Find sweetener source; Identify suitable fats; Establish processing method]
"Kaji know best honey-spots!" The Simari's chest puffed with pride. "Know where fat-nuts grow, too! Simari use for healing-paste and cooking-oils." He stuffed the remaining candies into his waist pouch and leapt onto a low-hanging branch with effortless grace. "Follow-follow! Kaji show you jungle's sweet secrets!"
Crystal glanced at Spohr, who tilted his cap in what she was beginning to recognize as acquiescence. The Myconari's bioluminescent patterns pulsed in a rhythm that somehow conveyed both resignation and amusement.
"I guess we're going on a chocolate hunt," Crystal said, adjusting her backpack. She couldn't help smiling at Kaji's infectious enthusiasm. For the first time since arriving in this strange world, she felt a spark of genuine excitementâa project, a goal, something concrete to focus on beyond her bewilderment. Crystal supposed that answers will eventually come with time.
"Lead the way, Kaji."
The Simari beamed, tail curling with delight as he scampered ahead through the undergrowth, already chattering about the wonders he would show them.
