Chapter 11: Ssyn & Nyzekka

Crystal and the Verdant Path2,100 words~11 min read

Crystal's eyes fluttered open, immediately squinting against the noon sunlight filtering through the canopy. Her skull throbbed with a vicious headache, and every muscle in her body screamed in protest as she tried to move. She groaned, bringing a hand to her temple.

A chime sounded in her mind, followed by a system notification:

[New Radix Vow Registered: Ssyn of the Hallow Jaw. New abilities and skills are unlocked and can be viewed within the Companion Web.]

"What the..." Crystal whispered, blinking in confusion.

A shadow fell across her face. Spohr knelt beside her bedroll, his cap pulsing with faint bioluminescence. His fingers brushed against hers, and Crystal's mind filled with images: darkness, worry, the campsite empty, her bedroll abandoned. The emotional impression of fear and concern washed over her.

"I'm sorry," Crystal muttered, her voice raspy. "I heard something... I had to help."

Spohr's fingers curled around her shoulders, gently helping her sit up. The movement sent a fresh wave of pain through her body. She winced, pressing a hand against her ribs.

Spohr reached for a wooden bowl beside him. Steam rose from the murky liquid inside. He pressed it into Crystal's hands, urging her to drink with another wave of emotional impressions—nourishment, healing, strength.

Crystal took a cautious sip and immediately spat it back out, her face contorting in disgust.

"Spohr! That is absolutely repulsive!" She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, coughing. "What is that, fermented swamp water?"

Spohr's cap dimmed slightly, his shoulders slumping with disappointment.

"I'm sorry, Spohr. I know you mean well."

It was then that Crystal noticed they weren't alone. Sitting across the campfire were two figures she'd never seen before: a massive, reptilian form and a much smaller creature perched nearby. The Crocan watched her with unblinking amber eyes. The smaller creature beside it resembled a cross between rat and lizard with whiskers and a long tail.

"Why are they here?" Crystal asked, her voice dropping to a whisper as she stared at the unexpected visitors.

Before anyone could answer, something small and furry dropped from a branch above, landing squarely in Crystal's lap. She yelped in surprise.

"Kreecha, you're a flip-noodle! Your quickle loopet last night gave you a moochy-mooch stickytail! Congrats!" Kaji exclaimed, his tail swishing excitedly.

[Approximate Translation: You're crazy! Your impulsive heroics last night got you married/bonded. Congratulations!]

"Married?" Crystal spluttered, looking frantically between Kaji and the Crocan. "What are you talking about?"

The smaller creature beside the Crocan stepped forward, fixing Kaji with a stern glare.

"Don't confuse her with things you don't understand," the creature said in perfect English, her voice surprisingly melodic despite her diminutive size. She turned to Crystal with a slight bow. "I am Nyzekka, a Krenka. This is Ssyn of the Hallow Jaw. You saved her life last night."

Crystal's memories flooded back—the monster, the fallen tree, the trapped Crocan. "Is she... are you okay?" she asked, looking at the Crocan.

Ssyn straightened her posture, touching a bone charm hanging from her neck. Her jaws parted, revealing rows of sharp teeth as she spoke.

"Ye zhïz rrash özok lë ye thala tha, ulo Krrystal. Shüdh Radix qerta thatu gïgza."

A system notification appeared in Crystal's peripheral vision:

[New Crocan words added to dictionary: "zhïz" (heart/life/soul), "rrash" (speak/talk), "özok" (loud), "lë" (from/for), "thala" (small/tiny/less), "tha" (size), "ulo" (general/commander), "qerta" (remember/know), "thatu" (big/large/more), "gïgza" (courage/bravery)]

Nyzekka translated smoothly: "Your heart speaks loud for your small size, General Crystal. The Radix remembers large courage."

Another notification appeared:

[Nyzekkka is bilingual and able to translate Crocan words. Would you like to disable individual Crocan vocabulary notifications? You can still access the full dictionary at any time.]

"Yes, please," Crystal muttered, mentally tapping the confirmation. "But make sure I can still check the vocabulary later."

[Confirmed. Individual word notifications disabled. Full dictionary remains accessible through the Language menu.]

"I don't understand what a Radix Vow is," Crystal said, turning her attention back to Nyzekka. "The system notification said something about new abilities?"

Nyzekka settled beside Crystal, her whiskers twitching slightly. "When you freed Ssyn from beneath the tree and fought off the Lurker, you performed an act of great courage and sacrifice. In Crocan culture, such an act creates a debt that must be honored." She gestured toward Ssyn. "She has sworn a Radix Vow of Loyalty to you. It is one of the most sacred bonds in our world."

"And that means...?" Crystal prompted.

"It means she will protect you with her life," Nyzekka explained, her blue eyes serious. "She will fight for you, bleed for you, even die for you if necessary. The vow binds her path to yours until death releases her."

Crystal stared at the Crocan warrior, who met her gaze unflinchingly. "But I was just helping. I didn't do it to... to get a bodyguard or whatever."

Nyzekka's whiskers twitched in what might have been amusement. "Intention doesn't matter in this case. The act itself created the bond. Ssyn recognizes you as honorable and worthy of her loyalty."

Cottonmoss fluttered down from where she'd been hiding, landing on Crystal's shoulder. She trilled softly, touching Crystal's cheek with tiny fingers.

"Your familiar seems pleased," Nyzekka observed. "She led us back to your camp last night. You were unconscious from Radix depletion."

Crystal glanced at the moss pixie. "Thank you," she whispered, receiving a happy trill in response.

She turned back to Ssyn, feeling overwhelmed by the warrior's intense gaze. "I appreciate the vow, but... isn't there a way to release you from it? I don't want to own someone's life."

Nyzekka translated Crystal's words for Ssyn. The Crocan's response was immediate and firm, her voice a low rumble of conviction.

"She says the vow cannot be undone," Nyzekka translated. "It is not slavery—it is honor. To reject it would be to reject her worth as a warrior. The Crocans do not make these vows lightly. They would question and potentially banish Ssyn if she did not make the vow after being saved."

Crystal sighed, rubbing her temples. Between the headache, the soreness, and now this unexpected bond, she felt completely out of her depth.

"Drink the broth," Spohr played the telepathic image in Crystal's mind while pushing the bowl toward her again.

Crystal grimaced but took another sip, forcing herself to swallow the bitter liquid. She had a feeling she would need all the strength she could get.

As Crystal forced down another mouthful of the bitter broth, Spohr's eyes glowed softly. He reached forward, placing his fungal fingers against her temple. A cascade of images flooded her mind: an ancient, towering figure with elephant-like features, tusks gleaming in sunlight, one broken at the tip. The figure stood beside a split stone formation, water flowing between the halves. Crystal felt wisdom, knowledge, and recognition pulse through the connection.

"An elephant person?" Crystal asked.

Spohr nodded, sending another impression—this one of a name whispered through countless fungal threads of the Deep Spore network: Yaghan-Ko.

"The Deep Spore thinks this... Yaghan-Ko can help me understand what's happening with my magic?" Crystal asked.

Spohr's cap pulsed with affirmation, and he transmitted an image of Crystal's white spark of magic being examined by the tusked figure.

Ssyn suddenly straightened, her amber eyes widening with recognition. She spoke in her guttural Crocan language, the words flowing like water over stones.

"Yaghan-Ko? Shüdh Loxari sleserhass? Na qerta da. Nyzekka-aüdühle, qerta da ukrii lez zurr re daï zare öhakre? Da loü ludh shüdh Ruhch Raak Nehyö."

Nyzekka's whiskers twitched with surprise. "'Yaghan-Ko? That Loxari seer? We know him,'" she translated, then added, "Ssyn is asking if I remember how he helped our tribe three seasons ago. He stays close to the Split River Junction."

"You know him?" Crystal asked, surprised by the coincidence.

"Yes," Nyzekka nodded. "He is a wanderer like all Loxari, but he follows certain seasonal patterns. This time of year, he meditates at the stone pools near the Split River Junction. It's about a two-day journey from here."

Kaji's tail lashed back and forth with visible agitation, his entire body quivering with barely contained distress. "Nopeeroo! What about our chocolate quest? We can't just abandon it before we've even started!" He bounced frantically on his toes, eyes wide with desperation as he clutched at the air with his small hands. "I've had itch-thought dreams about more of yum-sweet treasure all night long! The taste, the smell—it's been haunting me since that first bite! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we're talking about here!"

Spohr turned toward Kaji, his cap darkening as he projected a rapid sequence of images: Crystal's magic flaring white, then faltering; the jungle trembling; dark shapes encroaching from shadowy borders. The emotional impression was clear—urgency, necessity, priority.

Kaji's ears flattened against his head. "Fine, fine! I get it. Glimmy magic problems first, chocolate later." He crossed his arms, pouting.

Ssyn looked between Kaji and Nyzekka, confusion evident in her reptilian features. She gestured toward the Simari with a clawed hand.

"Chocolate? Nyzekka-aüdühle, da rrash kaïsh, ss?"

"I'm not sure, Ssyn-aüdühle. I can ask if you want," Nyzekka said to the Crocan.

Ssyn shook her head while holding a hand up. "Ghess, öhassre."

Crystal began to stand up, ignoring the throbbing in her head. "Well, if this Yaghan-Ko can help me understand what's happening, we might as well get going. The sooner we—"

Before she could finish, Ssyn moved with startling speed for her size. The Crocan warrior was suddenly beside Crystal, one scaled hand gently but firmly pressing her back down onto the bedroll.

"Ulo Krrystal, doch rïkhö quzüz. Ye kïhz rïkhö yor. Ye kïhz süh Radix radaïjaïk. Nuh ghess suq doch koyorr ye thatu."

Nyzekka translated immediately: "'General Crystal, you need rest. Your body needs healing. Your body withdrew Radix magic. I not allow you injure yourself more.'"

"First, I'm not a general. Second, I'm fine," Crystal protested, trying to sit up again. "I've pulled all-nighters studying for exams. This isn't—"

Ssyn growled, the sound rumbling from deep in her chest. Her amber eyes narrowed, and she kept her hand firmly on Crystal's shoulder.

"Doch zehn! Quzüz öha! Na uhkak öhassre."

"'You child! Rest now! We travel tomorrow,'" Nyzekka translated, amusement evident in her voice despite the serious situation. She giggled, "Sorry, I try to stick very closely word-for-word what Ssyn says."

"Look, I appreciate the concern, but I'm not a child," Crystal argued, her frustration growing. "And this vow thing doesn't mean you get to boss me around."

Ssyn's eyes flashed with irritation. She spoke rapidly, her words punctuated by sharp gestures.

"Nuh ghess deït ü drakka! Nuh qer ye rrüs, kïhz, tä zhïz — lë ye üyeïk. Rral thorrka öhakre ye kïhz quzüz, nuh nür doch!"

Nyzekka's translation came with barely suppressed laughter: "'I no against my vow! I protect your mind, body, and soul — from your stubbornness. Attempt standing before your body rests, I sit you!'" Nyzekka let out a laugh before straightening up. "Essentially, she's going to follow her vow, even if it's to protect yourself from your own stubbornness. If you don't rest properly, she'll sit on you."

Crystal glared at the Crocan warrior. "You can't just—"

"Doch üyeïk, kha!?!" Ssyn interrupted.

"'How you stubborn!?!'" Nyzekka translated, no longer hiding her amusement.

Crystal opened her mouth to protest again, but was met with two equally formidable stares—Ssyn's fierce amber glare and Cottonmoss's tiny but somehow equally intimidating frown. The moss pixie hovered directly in front of Crystal's face, tiny arms crossed, her bioluminescent cap glowing with unmistakable disapproval.

Crystal sighed in defeat. "Fine. One day of rest. But tomorrow we leave for this Yaghan-Ko, no matter how I'm feeling."

Ssyn nodded once, satisfied with the compromise. She picked up the bowl of medicinal broth and handed it back to Crystal with a look that left no room for argument.

As Crystal reluctantly drank the bitter medicine, she couldn't help but wonder what she'd gotten herself into. One moment, she was a struggling med student living in her car, and now she was bonded to a seven-foot reptilian warrior who was treating her like a disobedient child.

The worst part was, Crystal wasn't entirely sure Ssyn was wrong. The exhaustion weighed on her like a physical burden, her limbs heavy and her mind foggy. Maybe a day of rest wasn't such a bad idea after all.

She just hoped this Loxari seer would have some answers. Because the more time she spent in this world, the more questions kept piling up.
