Journal Entry #2
[Month: Rootwane. Day: Wiltday, 19. Year: 2250]
I met a thief today. A small, furry thief with a crooked tail and an accent that bounces around like he's gargling marbles while jumping on a trampoline. His name is Kaji, and he stole my backpack.
[Companion Profile Updated: Kaji - Simari Trickster, Trust Level: Cautious]
I should be angrier about the theft, but honestly? The little guy fixed the torn strap that's been driving me crazy for months. Who steals something just to repair it? Apparently, Simari tricksters do. And apparently, they go absolutely wild for chocolate. I've never seen anyone's eyes get so bigâthey practically took up half his face when he tasted that M&M.
So nowâ¦I have a mission: to make chocolate in this jungle world. It's ridiculous and perfect all at once. If I'm stuck here for a while (please be temporary), at least I have something to work toward besides "don't die" and "figure out interdimensional travel."
[Objective: Craft Chocolate - Progress: 0%]
[Required Components: Cocoa-equivalent pods, sugar source, processing tools]
Yes, thank you, I'm aware of what I need. I'm a med student, not an idiot.
[Processing: That was not an assessment of intelligence but a system-standard notification.]
And that wasn't sarcasm at all.
[Processing: Detecting elevated sass levels]
Anywayâ¦we found a grove of what looks like cocoa pods today, growing wild across the river. The problem? That's Crocan territory. What are Crocans, you ask? Oh, just giant crocodile people with bone jewelry that may or may not be from their enemies. Super approachable.
I spotted two today from a distanceâmassive, scaled, moving with this terrifying grace through the underbrush. There was a tiny creature walking alongside them. Iâm not sure what they are since Spohr only communicates with feelings and images while Kaji just calls them âleetle creebles.â They looked like they were having a conversation with the Crocans, though I couldn't hear anything from our hiding spot.
[Species Data: Crocan - Territorial apex predators with a complex honor-based society. Approach with extreme caution.]
Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.
[Species Data: ??? - Possible symbiotic partners to Crocans. Small. Insufficient data for complete description.]
With the way Kaji talks about them, you'd think they eat children for breakfast. Even Spohr seems wary (despite the different level of knowledge he has compared to Kaji), though it's hard to read expressions on a mushroom face. His spores turned a sickly yellow color when we discussed crossing into their territory.
I keep thinking about those pods, though. They're right there, just across the water. In a normal world, I'd just walk over, maybe ask permission, explain what I'm trying to do. But this isn't a normal world, and from the way Kaji's tail puffs up when he talks about "Bonebacks," I'm guessing diplomacy might not be straightforward.
[Cultural Note: Most species consider unauthorized entry into Crocan territory a death wish.]
Yeah, got that impression, thanks.
[Suggestion: Consider alternative ingredient sources or diplomatic approaches]
I'm working on it. There might be other groves elsewhere, according to Spohr, but nothing certain. The Deep Spore (still trying to wrap my head around that concept, especially after Kaji was able to give me a name for it) has memories of similar plants growing in other regions, but they're vague. Like trying to remember a dream from childhood.
It's strangeâwhen we were near the river, I felt this... humming. Not a sound exactly, more like a vibration just under my skin. No one else seemed to notice it. When I asked Spohr, his spores just formed a confused swirl. Kaji thought I was making a joke.
[Anomaly Detected: Unique sensory perception - possible Radix sensitivity]
What does that mean?
[Processing: Insufficient data for complete analysis]
Helpful as always.
I should probably sleep. We're camped under this massive tree tonight, safely away from the Crocan border. Kaji's already curled up, twitching in his sleep like he's chasing something. Spohr doesn't exactly sleepâmore like he goes into some kind of fungal meditation to connect with the Deep Spore, with little roots extending into the ground.
And here I am, writing in a magical journal inside my head. Med school definitely didn't prepare me for this.
Tomorrow, we need to figure out how to either get those pods without becoming crocodile snacks, or find an alternative source. I'm leaning toward the latter. I'm determined, not suicidal.
But beyond chocolate missions and avoiding apex predators, I need to keep my eyes open for any clues about how I got hereâand how to get back. My car's still sitting by that riverbank where I first arrived. There has to be a connection, a way back through whatever brought me here.
[Reminder: Your vehicle has been added to inventory for safekeeping]
Wait, what? My entire CAR is in my inventory? How is that even possible?
[Explanation: Dimensional compression algorithms allow for storage of large objects. Retrieval may require sufficient open space.]
That's... actually pretty cool. When exactly did this happen? You know what, never mind. I don't need to know. Sorry for the attitude earlier.
[Response: No offense taken. This unit lacks emotional processing capabilities.]
Somehow I doubt that.
I should really sleep now. Med student habits die hardâI'm mentally calculating how much REM sleep I can get if I fall asleep in the next ten minutes.
[Health Tip: Adequate sleep improves cognitive function and stamina regeneration by 27%]
For once, we agree.
Crystal Andrews, signing off from... wherever the hell I am.
[Location: Muragu, Western Jungle, approximately 3.7 miles from Crocan territorial marker]
...Thanks.
