Ace âI think Iâm gonna throw up.â Zane gagged as he stared at Aprilâs head.
âMan up.â Colby scoffed as she removed the last towel off the head.
Zane gagged again and turned around.
Colby rolled her eyes. âSeriously?â
âUh ya. Itâs all discolored and fucking nasty.â He replied still facing the other way.
âGrow some balls.â Colby said as Zylen tried to hold in her laugh.
âAnyway.â Deacon laughed. âIs that the marking you were talking about?â
I nodded as he pointed to the dark color.
Deacon looked closer and sniffed.
âDude!â Zane yelled as he looked like he was about to barf.
âYouâve killed rogues before. How does this gross you out?â Colby asked.
âYes. But I donât chop their heads off and give them to people! I just bite their neck and thatâs that. Severed heads creep me out.â He shivered in disgust.
Deacon rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to the head. âIt smells gross.â
âWell duh!â Zane exclaimed and he pointed at it. âItâs a fucking head.â
I growled at him. âEasy. She was one of my best friends.â
âDumbass.â Gabriel said to Zane.
âYes I know Zane. But itâs not the head that is giving off that smell. I think itâs something else.â Deacon suggested.
âHer head was cut off after she died.â I explained.
Deacon looked surprised. âI think I might know what killed her.â
âReally?â I asked shocked. âWhat do you think it is.â
âSulfur dioxide.â
âHuh?â Zylen asked.
Deacon nodded. âYou can get it from many different minerals.â
âBut how does that kill her?â
âWhen it combines with water, it forms into sulfuric acid.â
âAcid rain.â I whispered.
Deacon gave a small nod. âAnd because our bodies are mostly water, the outcome will most likely be death. April basically had acid rain in her lungs. And Iâm betting they made her inhale it to guarantee she would die.â
âSo that explains the discoloring around her mouth.â Gabriel said as he looked closer to the markings.
Deacon nodded. âAcid rain can cause extreme acidic tissue burns and acute pulmonary edema.â
âUmm English please.â Colby said confused.
âUncontrollable leaking of bodily fluids from damaged surfaces.â I spoke up.
âHuh.â Colby nodded. âSounds lovely.â
âWhere the hell did they get the sulfur shit from.â Zylen asked. âWe have nothing like that around here.â
âThere has to be some source. Because sulfur combined with anything can be very toxic and deadly.â Deacon said. âMaybe they are getting it from someone else. You have to be very careful with handling this. One wrong move and it turns bad real quick.â
âWait a minute.â I said as I remembered something.
âWhat is it?â Colby asked as she put her hand on my shoulder.
âThere is a small opening in the ground by a tree. Itâs about an hour from here.â I recalled.
âOh ya.â Zylen smiled with a nod. âI remember that.â
âWhat is it?â Gabriel asked.
Zylen shrugged. âWe donât know. Our parents told us not to go play by it when we were younger. They didnât know what it was either and they didnât want us falling down inside of it.â
âI snuck out once because I got curious.â I laughed as I remembered. âI shined a light inside and something reflected back. I almost fell in though when I shined my flashlight. It was too dark to see down there.â
âDo you think it could be where the minerals for the sulfur are?â Zane asked.
âItâs possible.â I said softly as I thought about it. âThe minerals could have been the thing that the light was reflecting on. It was pretty shiny.â
âShould we go take a gander?â Zane winked.
âReally?â Colby asked looking not impressed. âGander?â
âWhat?â Zane asked confused as Colby walked passed him.
I rolled my eyes and followed Colby out the door.
âJust come on. There is old trail that leads out that way. We can take one of my trucks.â I suggested as we walked out to the garage.
âOne of your trucks?â Deacon asked. âJust how many trucks do you have?â
âYou tell me.â I smirked as I opened the garage door.
âHoly moongoddess.â Zane whispered as his jaw dropped.
âI-is that the new 2017 Ford Raptor?â Gabriel asked as I unlocked it.
âYes it is.â I said smiling at its beauty. âHis name is Jarvis.â
âHow the hell did you get it?â Gabriel asked as he studied it some more.
âI know a guy.â I winked.
âOn second thought.â Gabriel mumbled. âI donât think I want to know how you got it.â
âProbably not.â I laughed.
âAnd Jarvis?â Deacon asked. âWhere did you come up with that name.â
I gasped. âAre you serious?â
I wanted to laugh as I saw Deaconâs very confused face.
âHe is the butler for Tony Stark. He is like the best computer system ever!â I exclaimed as I opened the truck door. âIâm surprised you didnât know that.â
âI donât watch ironman.â Deacon commented as he hopped in the passenger seat.
I looked at him in shock. âWhat kind of person are you?â
Deacon rolled his eyes. âWill you just show us the hole in the ground.â
âWill you just show us the hole in the ground.â I mimicked in a high pitched voice as I started Jarvis up. âMhmm I love the smell of diesel.â
âHow are we going to all fit in here?â Zane asked. âThe back is only big enough for three people.â
âZylen and I will share the middle seat.â Colby said as he clicked the seatbelt into place.
âHold on guys.â Zylen said as she tightened the seatbelt and Colby braced herself.
âWhat do you-â Gabriel started to ask but cut off as I stepped on the gas.
He screamed and grabbed onto the âoh shitâ handle.
âTold you!â Zylen yelled over the loud exhaust.
âOh my fucking gosh!â Zane yelled as he held onto the handle. âWe are going to die!â
âNo you wonât.â I smirked as I dodged all the trees and sped up.
I quickly shifted into fifth gear and stepped on the gas.
âWoo hoo!â I yelled as I swerved to avoid a tree.
A little bit later we arrived to our destination and I parked Jarvis.
âHere we are.â I smiled.
âLand!â Gabriel and Zane yelled as they opened the doors and jumped out.
âWimps.â Colby laughed as she and Zylen unbuckled and got out.
âHow are you two not freaking out?â Deacon asked as he tried to catch his breath.
âAfter you have ridden with her so many times, you kinda get use to her crazy driving.â Colby shrugged. âIt doesnât bother us anymore.â
âDamn.â Deacon mumbled as he shakily unbuckled his seatbelt. âI donât think I could ever get use to this driving.â
âEh.â Zylen chuckled. âYou will. You are mates with her after all.â
âI know.â Deacon smiled. âBut Iâm never getting in a car with her if she is driving.â
âHello.â Zylen said in a duh tone. âWe still have the drive back.â
I smirked as Deacon paled.
âNope. Not happening.â Deacon shook his head. âHave someone else drive.â
I glared at him. âNo one is allowed to drive Jarvis. He is my baby and I will bite your head off if you try.â
Deacon gulped. âNever mind then.â
âLetâs go check the hole out guys.â Zane said as he stood up.
I nodded. âItâs right over there. Follow me.â
âWhoa.â Gabriel mumbled as he leaned over it. âItâs pretty big.â
âLooks pretty deep too.â Deacon said.
âWhat if this is just like Alice in Wonderland!â Colby asked excitedly.
âThat would be fucking awesome!â I smiled.
âGirls.â Deacon laughed.
âOh right.â I said smiling. âSorry.â
âMy bad.â Colby laughed.
Zane smiled as he stared at Colby.
Itâs so cute the way he looks at her and how she is so oblivious to it.
I turned around and saw Deacon staring at me with a small smile.
I cleared my throat and turned my head before he saw me blush.
âUm I-I have a flashlight and rope in the truck.â I said quickly as I ran to go get it.
I opened the door and looked I the glovebox.
âStupid fucking little Deacon.â I growled as I grabbed the flashlight.
âWhat did I do?â A deep voice spoke up from behind me.
I yelped and spun around with the flashlight clutched to my chest.
Deacon smirked and laughed slightly.
âDonât do that to me.â I growled as I hit him with the flashlight.
âOw.â He laughed as he rubbed the side of his head.
I fought back a smile and just looked at him.
âWhy do you do that?â Deacon asked.
âDo what?â I asked.
âFight back that amazing smile that I love to see.â Deacon said as he used his thumbs and lifted my lips into a smile. âYou need to smile more.â
I swatted away his hands and laughed slightly.
âThere it is!â Deacon smiled as he saw me smile. âNow thatâs what I love to see.â
âLetâs get back.â I said as I gave him a pointed look.
âWait.â Deacon said quickly. âDonât punch me.â
I was about to ask why he said that, but my eyes widen as Deacon pecked my lips.
âI really wanted to kiss you, but I didnât want to get punched. So I decided a smaller kiss would be wiser.â Deacon smiled sheepishly as he rubbed the back of his neck.
I blushed slightly and that caused Deacon to smile even more.
âLetâs get back lover boy.â I said quickly as I walked around him.
I smiled in my head as I felt the butterflies in my stomach.
âEeeeeeh!â Ava squealed.
âUh why are you squealing?â I asked.
âTo be honest. I donât know.â Ava said confused. âI hate him. But he is such a good kisser.â
âDown girl.â I teased.
âYou canât deny it.â Ava said knowingly as I made it back to the group.
I turned around and saw Deacon smile.
âOkay.â I sighed. âYou got me there.â
âKnew it.â Ava laughed.
I laughed and looked at everyone.
âReady to find out whatâs down there?â I asked.
Colby grabbed the rope and tied it around the tree. âLetâs go.â
