Waters raced down as I washed my clothing, pieces of cloth were found everywhere. We recieved new clothes from villagers who had unknowingly dropped them; because during our path the clothes were laying there right in front of us, no one coming back to claim them. And they were nice; I found a commoners kimono yet It was still decent, and three different hakamas and other pieces. Satsu was washing near a waterfall as I washed the clothes, he didn't help since his clothes were lying down beside my feet. He washed himself yet he swam for hours as I washed our clothes and hung them on branches to dry. I walked towards the pool where the waterfall was racing and droplets of water crashed from off the distance, I breathed in cool air that had filled my lungs as I breathed out. I looked down at the pool where Satsu was swimming, and his head rose from above the surface.
"Eyra, we should just stay here. You and me, just here, build a home and create something!" He said. I looked down at my feet and up at him and smiled.
"We'll see." I looked at him, his hair grew long and his bangs were in his face as his hair became wet from the water. I chuckled; and then I jumped in. He splashed water on me as I had done so, we laughed as the waterfall fell beside us. I duck my head into the water and swam; he held on to my ankle and we swam deeper. I looked at him as our eyes opened beneath the water and we held our breath, we looked down below us. It was darker below; who knew what creatures could be down there or spirits. I swam up not taking the chance of getting caught by the troubles of another spirit, and I swam higher and soon I was swimming and my head was above surface.
"Eyra, what happened?" Satsu asked as his head bobbed above still water. I looked down and gasped trying to explain; and then I looked back into Satsus eyes.
"I was just afraid from what could be below us; that's all." I mentioned. His eyes looked down sorrowfully. He looked afraid as well.
"I'll try to save you next time if anything happens again."
He swam towards the edge of the land, and heaved himself on the ground. I swam right behind him, and got up as well. I felt a slight trickle against my foot. I screamed; and threw myself up and flung myself on the floor hitting my head against a tree. Satsu called out my name from fright, and ran towards me.
"Eyra! What now? What has happened?" He cried. I looked into his eyes again. His eyes were no longer a light shade of blue yet they looked with a hidden stance of fright; I coughed up water as I tried to explain.
"I don't know." I managed to say. He sighed a bit, and walked towards the edge of the water. He looked inside. Nothing was there.
"Perhaps we cannot stay here. Small things like that can mean much more, yet I'm not the one to say." His eyes prowled the land; nothing deprived them. He looked up unsure of his surroundings. Satsu was in complete dismay.
A rattling sound came before us. It didn't peer from inside the water, yet Satsu heard something and he was dying to know what of. More rustling beckoned from the distance, sounds of chimes and bells rattled. Satsu stood and his shoulders perked upwards in a fighting position. I stood beside him never daring to make a sound, I have waited for one of these moments as we stood and we seemed to not be alone. Such thoughts intwined with pictures of my imagination. Images of monsters and a face pierced through a veil in my mind, my eyes threw open as I was waiting for a sign. I looked around; I shook my hands, as I felt uneasy. Satsu started to growl from his abdomen.
'Chi chi, chuk chukka chuk.' The chimes rattled before, beside, and all around us. Satsu guarded me with all his might, he held on to an ornamental fan he had retrieved from the clothes we have found. The fan had been painted beautifully; there were no signs of possibility of this sacred item being owned by a commoner spirit. It had been blue with specks of pure white; light violet flowers in bloom growing all around the fan. Satsus eyes widened as he held it in his hands.
"There are no signs of this being owned by a commoner. This fan must have been owned by a sacred spirit; or even godlike." Satsu panted, as the wind grew fierce.
Again, the rattling of sounds grew closer, my eyes closed as tight as we could. Satsu stood not sure of what action he should choose, or even I felt more confused and distraught as he was. My magatama beads were motionless at this point. And my mind was uttermost blank; no images or thoughts appeared whatsoever.
Satsus eyes did not move; nor did his pupils dilate in movement. I released air from my lungs to release tension; my hand held Satsus as I squeezed his palm. He didn't move. I squeezed tighter, and he finally woke, and he lifted the fan from his hands as the sounds of chimes were beating in our ears. My whole body began to shake.
"Satsu!" I coughed; the air was polluted. The air was beginning to darken, stench up-rises. Satsu coughed and held the fan against our mouths.
"Miasma." He whispered with a trickled tone of vibrating caused by fear. I looked at him as we coughed violently the chimes shook violently and we heard laughter. I had remembered from ancient tales my mentor once told me; he said that miasma is a form of pollution in the air caused by darkened spirits. This must be what is causing catastrophe against us. Until a voice beckoned from the wet and humid vapor of the polluted air.
"Ho-Ho, here we are! Such beautiful creatures, a feast shall we have? Two young at their best full of energy and stamina! Won't it not rise my spirits such nutrition as thee'?"
The voice tickled itself with heaving outbursts of laughter, I held on to Satsu and I would not let go. The voice came forth from the depths of darkness'. It was a creature with a beautiful humanly face; a bit older than Satsu and I, yet he had wings and talons. He wore a mask with an unlikely large nose and a monster mask painted red; until he slipped the mask off with his dominant hand, his hair was dark and his face shown high cheekbones that were carved neatly against his face.
"A yokai." Satsu said not surprised of phased by the creature showing itself.
"Yes- I am a yokai. What sort if yokai? Well let's see, I have wings. Well yes, wings of course. And I also have talons! What sort of yokai must I be? Such a beautiful creature I am of course, yet who am I? Please do not be afraid to speak. Perhaps I can become your mentor! And maybe I can take that female of yours and be my slave or bretrothed bride." The yokai laughed as he eyed Satsu devilshy, and he looked at me with attraction. Chills went down against my skin; I only felt close to Satsu, not even a beautiful faced yokai.
"You are so beautiful." He came forth and motioned his hand to touch my face- until Satsu smacked his hand away with the fan which he held- the yokai hissed and backed away. A snarky chuckle came forth from him, as Satsu and I saw a sharp willing glow shown from the fan. I panted as Satsu growled intently at the yokai.
"Your yokai kind is a tengu." Satsu improvised. The tengu looked up startled by Satsus knowledge. He knew so much- perhaps too much, according to the tengu.
"You have wings, and claws or talons. You are winged yokai who is nothing good for this world, you prowl the lands to devour whichever you see." Satsu observed as the tengu gasped from shrilled shock; he stood back and tears shed from his eyes.
"You are the pathetic soul." He hissed.
The tengu came forth for vegence, he grabbed hold of me passing Satsu avoiding the powers of the fan from hitting him, I screamed as the tengu took me into the depths of the darkness.
"Eyra!" The sound of Satsu screaming my name became a dreary thought.
Satsus voice faded away from the distance, as I grew unconscious from the rememberance of this fateful day.
