I was confused, âYou can enlighten me more.â
I was calm.
She smiled bitterly, âYou gave the money obtained from HY to Hank. But have you thought that it was an unlawful loan? The media exposed this and now the market value is plummeting! Hank might not be able to make it through. Clara, you are so callous.â
I frowned, âUnlawful loan?â
The profits of HY were in my hands and I would not have touched them if I werenât having debts to repay.
âThese were legitimate profits of HY, and How can they be unlawful?â
âThen you might need to ask your husband.â She sneered, âYou couple cooperate so perfectly.â
I was confused still and said, âI will take responsibility if it were as you said. Itâs late and you just go.â
She had been my friend and she was pregnant.â
I could understand her excitement.
I saw her off and went upstairs.
Dennis was smoking in the study.
It was choking in the room.
I said, âIt is eleven and you want to sleep?â
He didnât reply and his eyes were on the papers.
âI gave that money to Hank.â I confessed, âI owed him my life and the money was like saving his life at that time and we are even.â
He was blowing the clouds.
I continued, âIt was my fault that I didnât consult you. But Hank was innocent and you are being unfair to him by buying the Gibson Group.â
âUnfair?â he turned to me and stared at me, âWhat is fair?â
I frowned, âDennis, didnât we agree that let the past be past? What do you mind?â
He minded the one month when Hank took care of me?
Dennis didnât answer and said angrily, âWho came just now?â
He approached me, âOr he called you?â
I stepped back and gripped my phone tightly, âDennis, donât be like this.â
He frowned, âGive me your phone, honey, give it to me.â
I pressed my lips and held the phone more tightly.
He was scary.
And he snatched the phone from my hand and saw it was Jane.
He sneered, âYou never avoided her and you want to be friends with her?â
I knew he was implying something.
And I was angry, âYou are overthinking. I am different from you as I would never chase someone to death in some base means.â
I said it calmly yet I knew how hurting it was.
Dennis broke the phone into pieces in outrage.
I had never seen him like this in the past seven years.
I was struck still.
I even thought he might be violent to me.
He didnât.
He said, âyou will never have any connection with Hank and Jane.â
All his grace and demeanor disappeared due to the outrage.
He had tolerated it for too long.
I could understand him or even forgive him.
I said nothing and left the study.
We were not young anymore and we wouldnât inform the world of our crisis.
I went to the bedroom and couldnât sleep.
Dennis didnât enter the bedroom that night.
And I had not been out of it.
We had our emotions to allay and it was no use facing each other too early.
After midnight, I was about to fall into sleep when I heard the door open, âClara,â he went to the bed.
I didnât answer.
He said in a low tone, âI am sorry.â
I said nothing and fell into sleep.
It was afternoon when I woke up.
I went downstairs to see Clarrie but saw a middle-aged woman in the sitting room.
She was Finn and the housekeeper that Dennis hired.
She said hi to me before she was busy with her business.
Dennis hired her to look after Clarrie.
Clarrie recovered a lot and was playing with Snowball in the yard.
I was to return to my bedroom when Finn asked me, âThe meal is almost ready, Mrs. shall I bring it upstairs?â
âNo, I will come downstairs later.â

I sat down in the bedroom.
My hair reached my waist.
When I was in university, I always wore short hair.
Diana told me that if some boy said he loved me and I could say I could hang out with him as long as my hair was long enough.
And the boy would understand this indirect rejection.
