The evening came faster than Gianna had expected, and by the time the sun had dipped below the horizon, she was nervously pacing in her room. Her outfit was laid out-simple yet elegant, a fitted black dress with a soft neckline and her favorite pair of heels. She'd spent the last half hour staring at the mirror, trying to calm her racing thoughts. She couldn't help but feel a mixture of excitement and nerves.
She'd never been on a dinner date with Hector, not in the way it felt now. Sure, they'd grabbed food countless times together, but this felt different. It felt... important. And she wasn't sure if she was ready for what that meant.
The doorbell rang, interrupting her thoughts. She took a deep breath, smoothed out her dress, and walked down the stairs, her pulse quickening with each step. When she opened the door, Hector stood there, looking effortlessly handsome in a well-tailored shirt and black jeans. He looked good, maybe too good, and Gianna couldn't help but feel a little self-conscious.
"Hey, Giu," he said, his voice warm as he flashed her that signature grin that always made her heart race. "You ready?"
Gianna nodded, suddenly feeling a wave of nervous energy rush over her. "Yeah, just let me grab my bag," she said, stepping aside to let him in for a moment.
As she turned to head back upstairs to grab her things, she could feel Hector's eyes following her. He didn't speak, but she felt the weight of his gaze on her back, and for a second, it made her stomach flip.
"Everything alright?" he asked, the soft concern in his voice making her freeze mid-step.
Gianna turned around, offering him a smile, even if it was a little shaky. "Yeah. Just... you know, the usual. Nerves."
Hector chuckled lightly, taking a step toward her. "I get it. I'm a little nervous too."
She raised an eyebrow in surprise. "You?"
"Yeah, you know," Hector said with a shrug, his expression serious but with a slight playfulness. "It's not every day I go on a date with my best friend."
Gianna's heart skipped a beat, and she felt a warmth spread across her chest at his words. The fact that he saw this as more than just another evening made her feel a little better, a little less on edge.
"I'm ready," she said, grabbing her bag and making her way to the door. "Let's go."
They headed out, and the drive to the restaurant was filled with a light, comfortable silence. Hector had the radio on low, a mix of music playing in the background. Every now and then, he'd glance over at her, and each time, Gianna felt that familiar flutter in her chest.
The restaurant they'd chosen was tucked away in a quiet part of the city, offering an intimate atmosphere with dim lighting and cozy tables set for two. As they entered, the hostess greeted them, leading them to a small, private table by the window. The soft glow of the candles on the table created a warm, romantic atmosphere, and Gianna couldn't help but feel a little out of place, as though the gravity of the situation was beginning to sink in.
After they were seated, Hector leaned back in his chair, looking at her with a slight smile. "This is nice, huh?"
Gianna nodded, trying to calm her racing heart. "Yeah, it is. Really nice."
The waiter came by, took their orders, and then disappeared, leaving them alone in the quiet of the evening. There was a slight tension in the air, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was just... different. The silence between them wasn't awkward, but there was an undeniable shift in the way they were now interacting. It was a quiet kind of anticipation, as though they were both waiting for something to change.
"So," Hector began, breaking the silence, "I know we've been friends for a long time, but I've been thinking..." He trailed off, looking down at his hands for a moment.
Gianna felt her pulse quicken again. "What's on your mind?"
Hector's gaze met hers, and for a moment, it felt like the world around them had paused. He looked at her seriously, his expression soft but intense. "I don't know when it happened, but somewhere along the way, I started seeing you differently. I didn't expect it, and I didn't plan for it, but I think..." He paused, taking a breath, clearly gathering his thoughts. "I think I might have feelings for you. More than just friendship."
Gianna's heart stopped for a moment. His words hung in the air, heavy and meaningful. She could feel the warmth in her cheeks as a mix of emotions flooded her-surprise, joy, confusion, and something else, something deeper that she couldn't quite name.
"Wait, what?" Her voice came out in a surprised whisper.
Hector laughed softly, though there was a touch of nervousness in his eyes. "Yeah, I know. This is probably the last thing you expected from me, but I can't deny it anymore."
Gianna's thoughts were a whirlwind. Her best friend-her Hector-liked her. Not just as a friend, but in a way that made her heart race and her palms sweat. She had thought about this for so long, but hearing him say it out loud made it feel all too real.
"I don't know what to say," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Don't say anything you don't feel comfortable with," Hector said quickly. "I don't want to rush you into anything. I just... needed to say it."
For a moment, Gianna sat there, unsure of what to do or how to respond. She had wanted this for so long, but now that it was here, she couldn't find the right words.
But then she realized-there was no right or wrong way to feel. There was only the truth, and the truth was, she liked him too.
"I think I might feel the same," she said softly, her voice shaking just a little.
Hector's eyes brightened, and he leaned forward, his expression more open and genuine than she had ever seen it. "Really?"
Gianna nodded, her heart beating faster now that the words were out there. "Yeah. I just didn't want to mess up everything we've built."
Hector smiled, his gaze softening. "You won't. I promise."
And for the first time in what felt like forever, Gianna let herself believe it.
