The next day, after another grueling practice under the summer sun, Gianna was resting in the locker room, her muscles sore but satisfied. The sound of the other girls chatting around her faded as she wiped the sweat from her forehead, letting her mind wander back to the conversation with Marc from the night before. It felt like a weight had been lifted, but now, all she could think about was Hector.

The last thing she expected was for her phone to buzz in her pocket.

Without hesitation, she grabbed it, heart doing that familiar flutter when she saw Hector's name on the screen.

Hector: "Hey, Giu. I was wondering if I can take you out for dinner tonight. Just the two of us."

Her heart skipped a beat. She read the message twice, unsure if she was dreaming or if it was real. She quickly typed back, trying to keep her cool but failing miserably as a huge smile spread across her face.

Gianna: "Okay, I would like that. A lot."

As soon as she sent it, she felt a rush of excitement and nerves flood her body. This was different. This wasn't just hanging out with the group. This wasn't a casual thing. Hector was asking her out on a date. A real date.

She was still grinning like an idiot when Cienna, who had been sitting nearby, caught her eye.

"You look like a kid who just got their favorite toy," Cienna teased, a knowing smirk on her face. "What's going on?"

Gianna's face flushed bright red, and she stuffed her phone back into her bag. "Nothing," she said quickly, trying to act casual. "Just... um, nothing important."

Cienna didn't buy it for a second. She raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "Uh-huh. I don't believe you. Let me guess. Hector?"

Gianna's heart hammered in her chest as she bit her lip, desperately trying to come up with a response that wouldn't give everything away. But the grin on her face was enough of an answer.

"I knew it," Cienna said, leaning in with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "So, what did he say?"

"He asked me to dinner tonight," Gianna confessed, her voice quieter now, feeling the weight of the moment. "I said yes."

Cienna's eyes widened, and a huge grin spread across her face. "You're really doing this, huh?" she asked, her tone playful but laced with excitement. "I'm happy for you, Giu. You deserve it."

Gianna felt a wave of relief wash over her at Cienna's words. She hadn't realized how nervous she was until that moment, but hearing her best friend's support made it feel a little easier.

"Thanks, Cici," Gianna said, her voice softening. "I don't know, it just feels... different with him. But I don't know what it means yet."

Cienna shrugged casually, but there was an underlying knowing look in her eyes. "You'll figure it out. Just don't overthink it."

Gianna nodded, but as she did, her thoughts started spinning again. She knew Cienna was right-she shouldn't overthink it. But how could she not? This was Hector. Her best friend. The one person who had always been there for her. How could something that felt so right also feel so terrifying?

Cienna didn't wait for Gianna to finish her thought. She stood up, giving her a playful nudge. "Well, you've got a date tonight, so you should go home and get ready! You don't want to look like you just came from practice."

Gianna laughed, the nervous tension slowly slipping away as she nodded. "Yeah, yeah. I'll go get ready."

As Cienna walked off to grab her things, Gianna looked down at her phone again, rereading Hector's message. Her stomach fluttered with a mix of excitement and anxiety. This was happening. And as much as she was afraid of what it might mean for their friendship, she couldn't help but feel a spark of hope that maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of something more.

A soft ping sounded from her phone as another message from Hector popped up.

Hector: "Can't wait to see you tonight, Gianna."

Her heart skipped another beat. She quickly typed a response, not overthinking it for once.

Gianna: "Me neither."

And for the first time in a long while, Gianna felt like maybe everything was falling into place.
