The evening had fallen quietly around them. The usual clamor of the city was softened by the heavy curtains pulled shut in Gianna's living room, leaving only the ambient hum of the night. The air inside felt warm, cocooned by the soft glow of the lamp on the side table and the low background music that played, barely audible.

Gianna was in her usual spot on the couch, the one she'd taken up ever since she'd been on crutches, propped up by cushions and wrapped in a cozy blanket. Hector had joined her as usual, but this time, things felt different. There was a comfortable, almost intimate silence between them, a sense that they were simply existing in each other's company without needing to speak.

The room was filled with the occasional flicker of the TV in the corner, but neither of them was paying attention. Gianna had been reading, but her mind kept drifting away from the book in her lap. Hector, on the other hand, was lazily scrolling through his phone, though his focus seemed to wander toward her more often than not.

"Gianna," Hector's voice cut through the stillness, quiet but steady.

She looked up from her book, slightly startled by the sound of her name. "Yeah?" Her voice was soft, an unspoken question hanging in the air, wondering what was on his mind.

"Come here," he said, motioning to the spot beside him with a slight gesture of his hand. She gave him a puzzled look, but he only smiled gently. "Just... sit for a second."

With a shrug, Gianna shifted, carefully maneuvering herself toward him. Hector moved over a bit, making room for her to settle more comfortably. When she was close enough, he reached out, guiding her to lean back against him, her head finding a natural place on his lap.

At first, Gianna was unsure. It wasn't a position they had been in before, not like this. But Hector's presence, as always, was a calming one. She relaxed almost immediately, the warmth of his legs beneath her head offering an unexpected comfort.

He ran his fingers gently through her hair, the soft touch making her close her eyes for a moment, feeling the stress and tension of the day slip away. The simple motion was grounding, familiar. It felt like a quiet conversation in itself.

"You've been quiet," Hector observed, his voice soft as he continued his movements, brushing a strand of hair away from her face.

Gianna sighed deeply, almost imperceptibly, as she shifted slightly to get more comfortable. "I guess I've just been thinking. About everything, nothing... it's just one of those nights where my head won't stop racing."

He chuckled softly, a warm sound. "I get that. I have those nights too. Feels like your mind is a thousand miles away, even when you're right here."

"Mhm," she murmured, eyes still closed. "I think I've been caught between wanting to rush forward and just... needing to pause. It's hard sometimes, you know?"

"I know exactly what you mean," Hector replied, his voice steady as he continued to toy with her hair. "There are days I just want to throw everything aside and move forward, but sometimes, it's okay to take a step back and breathe."

She let out a breath, nodding slightly. "That's what I'm trying to do. But it's hard when all you want to do is run back to what you love... even when your body is telling you to slow down."

"I think you're doing the right thing by taking it slow," Hector said thoughtfully, his fingers massaging her scalp lightly. "You'll get back to it, Gianna. Just don't rush it. It's okay to take things one step at a time."

Gianna smiled softly at his words, the comfort of his voice mixing with the rhythmic motion of his fingers. "You always know what to say."

"Years of practice," Hector teased. He paused for a second, leaning down as if to look at her face. "And, if we're being honest, I've had a front-row seat to how stubborn you can be."

Gianna laughed, her breath light and easy. "True. I can be a little... persistent when it comes to pushing myself."

He smiled, brushing his fingers through her hair once more, his touch tender and deliberate. "But that's also what makes you incredible. You don't stop, even when the world is telling you to. It's one of the things I admire most about you."

Gianna opened her eyes, looking up at him through the dim light, his face illuminated by the soft glow of the lamp. She found herself caught in his gaze, the warmth and sincerity in his eyes giving her a sense of calm she didn't know she needed.

"Thanks, Hector," she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "That... really helps."

He smiled down at her, a gentle smile that seemed to soften the space around them. "I'm always here for you, you know that, right?"

She nodded slowly, the weight of his words settling in her chest like a warm blanket. "I do. I just... sometimes I forget that I'm not alone in this."

"You're never alone," Hector replied, his voice full of conviction. "Not with me, not with any of us."

Gianna smiled faintly, feeling her heart lighten. She felt a gentle swell of gratitude toward him, for the way he always knew how to ease her mind, to offer her a sense of peace in the midst of her chaos. It was moments like this-when they didn't have to talk about anything in particular, when their conversation flowed between meaningful words and comfortable silences-that made everything feel okay.

Hector resumed playing with her hair, his touch now slower and more relaxed as they simply existed in the quiet. There was no pressure to fill the space with anything else. It was enough to be here, in this moment.

"Do you ever feel like the world just keeps moving while you're standing still?" Gianna asked after a while, her voice soft but thoughtful. "Like... everything's changing, but you're stuck in place?"

Hector considered her words for a moment, his fingers stilling in her hair as he thought. "Yeah. It's like sometimes life takes these huge leaps forward, and you're left trying to catch up. But I don't think it's about running after it. It's about learning to move with it, even if it feels slow at times."

Gianna closed her eyes again, taking a slow, steady breath. "I like that. I think that's what I've been missing, trying to fight against everything rather than letting it happen."

"Exactly," Hector said, his voice low and reassuring. "You don't have to race the world. You just need to find your own pace."

For the first time in a while, Gianna felt truly at peace. She wasn't in a rush to get anywhere. With Hector's hand gently running through her hair, his words a steady comfort, she felt like everything was exactly where it needed to be, if only for a moment.

And in that moment, she realized something simple, but profound: it was okay to let things happen. To just... be.

And with Hector there, she knew she could do just that.
