3: Dinner with the Enemies

Loved You Anyway [Zayn Malik]3,560 words~18 min read

Okay before you continue reading this story I would like to make something clear because I've been getting a bunch of comments about it. Hazel is portrayed slightly bitchy and like a brat and to be quite honest, I wanted her to be portrayed like that for now. She isn't on good terms with her parents and she doesn't get along with the Maliks for a reason I didn't get the chance to mention in this book. Her character will develop onwards, I know she seems bitchy right now. On another note, thanks for reading! :)

Chapter 3:

Zayn POV:

"Zayn get up!" Waliyha yelled, shaking me violently. I groaned and pushed her away but regretted it immediately when she pushed me off the bed and I hit the floor with a loud thump.

I whimpered in pain and could feel her smirking. I rubbed my head, trying to stop the pain. I looked up and noticed her looking down at me with an evil smirk on playing on her lips. I sighed and made myself comfortable on the floor and decided to sleep again. I heard her groan.

"Zayn, don't make me go get a bucket of water!" she warned and I chuckled.

"You wouldn't."

"Watch me!"

She turned on her heels and walked out of my bedroom. I waited a couple of seconds, waiting for her to come with a bucket of water but she didn't. She walked back inside my bedroom and rolled her eyes. I smirked and sat up on the floor.

"Just get up! Mom needs you to help her at the kitchen, dinner with the Anderson's tonight," she said and turned around and left my bedroom. I licked my lips and stood up, stretching my arms upwards hearing a few bones crack and relax. I breathed out and looked around my messy room.

I shrugged it off and looked out of the window. The blinds were pulled up, I moved sideways to try and get a better look of the room opposite. It was the neighbour's daughter's bedroom, Hazel I think her name was. Her bed was still messy but the covers were pulled off, her bedroom door opened and she walked in already dressed up in a sweater and skinny jeans together with a pair of Converse, her black hair was straightened and it flowed down her back. She yawned and frowned at her bed, then looked at the window and noticed me staring. Her eyes widened but quickly turned cold and narrowed slightly. She grabbed something off her desk and left her room, slamming the door shut.

I furrowed my eyebrows, confused. I shook my head, trying to shake off the feeling that something was wrong and walked out of my room and towards the bathroom. After having a shower, I dressed into black skinny jeans and a white top; I arranged my hair and walked down in the kitchen. I grabbed a piece of toast from the toaster and took a bite. I leaned on the counter while my youngest sister munched on her cereal and my Mom was looking through cooking books. I sniffed and trailed my tongue over my front teeth, still thinking why Hazel had acted that way. I mean, yeah I was looking through her window but it wasn't like she was naked or something and besides, she wasn't in the room when I first looked. But the look in her eyes wasn't of being uncomfortable, it was something else.

"Zayn, can you go buy me some things?" my Mom asked and looked up at me, while grabbing a piece of paper and jotting down things to buy.

I shrugged and waited for her to hand me the paper and money. I took out my cell phone out of my back pocket and text ed my best mate, Harry. My phone quickly vibrated with a reply, I smirked and placed it back in my back pocket. My Mom handed me the paper, I kissed her on the cheek and left the house. I slammed the door behind me and walked down the drive way, when I turned right, a car drove down from the driveway of the Anderson's. Mrs Anderson smiled and waved, I smiled back but Hazel, that was sitting in the front seat, didn't even glance up. I heard my name being called and I looked up and noticed a curly haired boy walking towards me. Mrs Anderson waved goodbye and put the car to drive and drove down the road and out of sight, while the gates closed behind her.

We did our usual man-hug and started walking towards the town's grocer instead of walking for a half hour to the supermarket. We talked about random things and how he managed to hook a girl up yesterday after I left. I chuckled at the way he described his perfect night.

"So, did your Mom get mad?" he asked, referring to the fact I got home an hour late.

"Yeah, but Dad was cool about it and they left me with just a yell," I explained and he nodded.

"My Mom almost had a fit when I arrived home almost dead drunk," he said with a chuckle, I smirked and rolled my eyes. "Sophia was damn flirting yesterday."

I rolled my eyes. "Talk about the devil," I said almost a whisper, looking up at a blond haired girl with a fake tan but it suited her perfectly, her blue eyes shining, a smile playing on her lips. She was wearing a pair of black leggings and a white woolen sweater on top, showing her belly button which was pierced. She had the model figure and the figure most girls would kill to have but she wasn't my type. We went out together and slept with each other multiple times but it was only for fun.

"Hey boys," she said and shortly hugged us. "Where ya goin'?"

I lifted my hand, showing her the piece of paper and she slightly raised one of her eyebrows but quickly smiled at me, then looked at Harry shortly.

"Have fun, I guess, I'm off to Ambers see ya tomorrow," she said and left, her ass hitching up with every step she made.

After making sure she was out of ear shot, I looked at Harry and noticed he was looking back at her, his eyes planted on her ass. I grabbed his shoulders and turned him round, he snapped out of the trance and smiled sheepishly. "What I'd do to her."

I burst out laughing and patted his back. "She's all yours, mate."

He looked at me, his eyes wide in shock. "I thought you two had a thing going on with what happened this week in the janitor's closet," he said and winked.

I rolled my eyes and we continued walking. "It's just a fling, jeez Haz."

He shrugged and pushed open the door to the grocers shop. After getting the things my Mom had asked for, I paid and we walked out of the shop, with two paper bags in our hands. We walked back towards my house while we kept on our random conversations from school to girls to work to football to the new game that just came out and anything that was either interesting, funny, stupid or that included girls.

My little sister, Safaa, opened the door still in her pajamas. When she saw Harry behind me, she quickly blushed and ran upstairs, probably hiding in her bedroom. I chuckled and rolled my eyes.

"You have an impact on my little sister, Haz," I whispered and his eyes widened and he winked.

We walked inside the kitchen and saw Waliyha sitting on the counter top, her legs crossed looking at Mom cooking, preparing for tonight's dinner with the Anderson's. I chewed down on my lip while I placed the bag on the table. I leaned down on the table, staring at the wall in front of me.

"Morning Harry," Waliyha greeted Harry.

"Morning," he replied, with a smile. "Good morning Tricia."

"Morning," she replied, sounding busy and to not be bothered with.

I heard Harry's phone ringing. I looked up at him, he was reading a text message and then looked at me. "I have to go mate, you're coming tonight?"

"Nope, new neighbours coming over for dinner," I replied and he nodded, said goodbye to my Mom and sister and left.

After I heard the front door close, footsteps went down the steps and Safaa came down, peeking into the kitchen. I looked up at her with a smirk, her eyes landed on me and she smiled sheepishly.

"Make it a little more obvious you've got a crush on Haz," I told her with a chuckle, rolling my eyes. Her eyes widened and her face quickly turned tomato red. "Don't worry, he didn't notice."

She nodded and walked towards the sitting down, curling herself on the sofa and watched Phineas and Ferb.

Hazel POV:

"Hazel, that's the school, honey," my Mom said, stopping the car in front of a red-bricked wall school. 'Tong High School'. Such a lovely name for a lovely school. And apparently, Zayn's attending the same school, along with his popular friends. I had absolutely how my mother knew that but she did and that was weird. "Hazel, honey did you look at it?"

"Yes, Mom, I did and I can't believe I have to wear a fucking uniform," I replied and she gasped, slightly slapping my arm.

"Language, young Lady!" she warned and I rolled my eyes. "And besides, it's only for this year with a uniform, Year 12's are allowed to wear normal clothing's but you're in Year 11 so, uniform for you."

I rolled my eyes and imagined myself in the uniform we had bought around a week ago. I just wanted to hide in a box and never get out. Since I was home schooled, I usually wore my pajamas or something comfortable and not a uniform. Like, come on! A uniform? On me? Next joke.

I sighed and leaned my elbow on the window sill, waiting to arrive home. It was already four in the afternoon and we had to be at the Malik's at around seven-ish. I had already warned my mother that I wasn't going to wear any sort of fancy clothes like she had planned on wearing. It was just a dinner at the Malik's, at the enemies house. Anger bubbled inside of me but it quickly subsided when my favourite song came on the radio and I turned the volume up, singing along to the song.

*

"HAZEL! Hurry up!" my beloved mother yelled from downstairs. I rolled my eyes and sighed, deciding on wearing my black skinny jeans instead of the dark blue skinny jeans. I slipped them on, while slipping into my purple Uggs. I grabbed my cell phone and headed down the marble staircase. My parents were waiting for me near the door, my mother tapping her foot down on the floor while my father was sending a text on his cell phone. "Finally!"

I rolled my eyes and my father opened the front door, turning off the lights and putting on the alarm then closed the door behind the three of us. We walked down the driveway and turned round the corner and up the Malik's driveway. Right now, I actually wished I had a friend so that I could text but I didn't. If I could I wouldn't be here but watching The Vampire Diaries marathon on TV. My father rang the doorbell and a man opened the door, probably the father, Yaser I think his name was.

He greeted the three of us with a warm smile, my parents greeted him back with a warm smile and I gave him a cold glare. He hugged my father like he had known him forever, shook my mother's hand and then looked at me, he noticed my cold glare at him and he tried to smile but when I didn't smile back, he looked at my father and moved back to let us in. I followed my parents inside and the same warm welcome feeling enveloped me, I tried to ignore the feeling. He led us inside the sitting room area and a large table was set up for nine people but there were twelve chairs in all.

Waliyha and a little girl were sitting on the couch watching television. Patricia came out of the kitchen, an older girl following her. Patricia smiled at us and shook my parents hands, then looked at me and smiled.

"It's so nice to see you again, Hazel," she said and I faked a smile. "I think we can take our seats and eat, Zayn is supposed to have arrived from work by now."

My heart beat raced for some sort of reason when she mentioned Zayn's name. Right on cue, the front door opened and the door slammed shut and in walked Zayn. He was wearing black skinny jeans and a dark red hoodie. He smiled at us, but again he only received a cold glare from me while receiving the opposite from my parents.

We sat down on the chairs, but since my parents sat down next to Yaser and Patricia, I ended up sitting opposite them, between Waliyha and Zayn. Such joy sitting for dinner with your long-term family enemies.

They tried to involve me into conversations but I was too busy playing with the cute baby carrots on my plate.

"Hazel, I've heard you're going to attend the same school as Zayn," Patricia interrupted me.

I looked up and slightly raised my eyebrow up at her. I was only nice to you because I didn't know you were a damn Malik, I thought coldly.

"Yeah," I replied shortly, sticking my fork in the carrot and stuffing it into my mouth, tasting the sweet taste of it.

"Zayn can walk with you to school tomorrow if you like, it's not that far away from here," Yaser's deep voice suggested and my mouth stopped chewing and my  eyes shot up at him. I tried to swallow but ended up choking on the food.

After a couple of more coughs, I stopped. "I'm fine, thanks."

"She'd love for him to walk her to school," my mother interrupted me and I shot her one of my glares. I could feel all eyes on me and my reaction to the offer.

"No, I wouldn't, I'm fine walking alone," I replied, not taking my eyes off my mothers'.

She gave me one of her icy cold glares, warning me to shut up. I gave her my cold glare, telling her to shut up and leave me do my own decisions without her butting her British ass. My father cleared his throat and decided himself.

"She would love for him to walk with her to school to show her the way," he said and I looked at him, my eyes wide.

I felt Zayn shift in his eyes and he reached his hand over me, grabbing a piece of bread and took a bite from it. I quickly looked at him and noticed a tiny smirk on his face.

"Well, that's settled," Yaser said and I bit my tongue to stop myself from saying that it wasn't but I couldn't go against my father's words, I respected him enough to not do that.

I jammed my fork into the last piece of baby carrot and jammed it inside my mouth. "Where's the bathroom?"

"Up the stairs, first door on the left," Waliyha replied and I stood up from my chair and headed out of the sitting room and up the stairs, but stopped in the entrance of the corridor.

Which side did Waliyha say? I shrugged and turned on my right, pushing open the door but stopped noticing that it was a bedroom and not a bathroom.

I noticed that this was Zayn's room, the one opposite mine. I sighed and turned around to leave, I slowly closed the door and crossed to the other side, turning on the lights and closing the door, locking it. I walked over towards the mirror and looked at my reflection. I stared deeper into my crystal blue eyes and felt tears welling up in my eyes. My lips quivered and before I could stop myself, I burst into a wave of tears, a wave of uncontrollable tears and memories of a year ago in September rolled in my eyes and I sat down on the floor, crying. I took in a quick breath in-between tears but ended up coughing instead.

My breathing was uneven and I wiped my eyes and trails of smudged black eyeliner beneath my eyes with some tissues. I stood up and looked back at the mirror; my eyes were a bit red but I could cover that up by saying I was tired. I took in a deep breath, closing my eyes as I cleared my thoughts and let out my breath. I licked my lips and turned towards the door, unlocking it and as I swung it open I came in contact with a fist, attempting to knock on the door.

Zayn was standing in front of me, looking down at me. His eyebrows furrowed in thought then looked at me confused.

"Are you okay?" he asked softly.

I swallowed and set my jaw, looking straight into his gorgeous brown eyes. "Don't act like you care, I don't need anyone's pity."

I swerved around him and walked down the stairs, finding my parents waiting at the door talking with the Yaser and Patricia, a smile spread on all four faces. They all looked up as they heard me coming down the stairs. I walked towards my father, crossing my arms across my chest like a little girl wanting to be protected.

"We sent Zayn to see if you were okay," Patricia said, sounding kind.

I raised my eyebrows and sighed quietly. "Yeah."

She looked at me with a smile, then back at my mother. "Well, it was nice of you to come over for dinner and set everything straight. Zayn will come for Hazel at around 7.30," she said and my mother nodded.

"7.30!?" I blurted out, my eyes wide. "Who wakes up at 7.30!?"

All four faces looked at me, shocked. "Lessons start at 8.15 and you still have to pick up your schedule and get your locker and all," my mother said, looking at me sternly.

I breathed out heavily and wanted to pluck my hair out. Me waking up that early? Me!? That early? Ha! So funny.

"Anyways, goodnight Tricia, Yaser," my father thanked them politely. "Thank you."

My mother smiled at them and I faked a smile, waiting for the door to open and I sprint towards my house. Yaser opened the door and we walked out, my parents saying their final goodbyes and good nights, then turned around and we walked towards our house.

I groaned out and smiled happily at my beloved bed. The door slammed shut behind me and I ran towards my bed, jumping on it my arms and legs sprawled out, clutching at the bed spread as though hugging it.

"Oh how I've missed you, baby," I said, my voice muffled due to my face being buried in one of my pillows.

I reached my hands beneath my pillow and felt the soft texture of my pajama beneath, took them out from beneath the pillows and started changing. After I had covered myself beneath the covers, I reached over to switch of the lampshade but a door on the knock stopped me, the door knob turned open and my father came into view.

He softly smiled at me and I smiled back at him. He walked in my uniform hung on a clothes hanger in his hands. He hung it on the doorknob to my closet and sat down on my bed looking at me.

"I know you dislike the Malik's, but try to act like you don't Hazel," he said and I sighed and chewed my lip. "I'm not going to let the past ruin my old friendship with Yaser again."

My eyes widened and I looked at him curiously. "You were friends with Yaser?"

He nodded. "But my parents found out he was a Malik and they didn't let me see him again and now that we're neighbours, I'd like to stay friends with him without any fights over the past. Understood?"

I groaned and sighed. "Yeah but don't dare think that I will be okay with all of this, I still dislike them and no one can change that except me. Understand father?" I asked him, trying to not smile.

He chuckled and rolled his eyes. "Try to make yourself change that then, they're very nice people."

He didn't wait for me to respond as he stood up, said goodnight and left, closing the door behind him.

I turned off the lampshade, cuddling myself around the covers. I started closing my eyes as sleep started to take over me.

I was so not looking forward for tomorrow. Plus the ten minute walk with Zayn. Alone.

The joy in that!

Waahheeyyyy :D Hope you enjoyed this chappy :)

xoxo ~Kat
