Chapter 18:
Hazel POV:
On the way back that night I was only thinking if I had done the right decision and I kept getting curious glances from Zayn which was sitting in the passenger seat and I was sitting behind Louis because Harry was sitting behind Zayn's seat and Jesy in the middle. Jesy knew, obviously. I had told her the minute we left Niall's house and out of anyone's ear shot.
She said that I'll start to get the feeling of 'fireworks exploding' by time but I knew that it wouldn't. I was sure because that one time I had shortly kissed Zayn for those three seconds at Harry's party, I had that feeling and my lips tingled the second I pushed him away, only wanting more but I knew that it was wrong.
It felt wrong with Chase but I couldn't tell him that. Maybe it was right and it was all in my imagination. I mean you don't have to always get that feeling right? Or did you? Or maybe not ... Do you have to get that feeling to know that it's right or it's not necessary? Or maybe it is.
"Hazel!" Harry and Zayn both screamed my name and I slightly jumped in shock and detached myself from my thoughts.
"What?" I asked confused.
"About time," Zayn said, rolling his eyes, his torso turned around to look at me. Apparently Louis had dropped off Jesy and I hadn't noticed. "We've called your name three times."
I rolled my eyes. "What did you want?"
"What's up with you?" Harry butted in. "You look ... dreamy."
I arched one eyebrow at him and chuckled. "I'm fine."
"If you say so," Harry said and the car stopped and I noticed we had arrived in front of Zayn's house.
"You're staying over at Zayn's?" Louis asked sounding tired.
"Parents in Ireland," I mumbled while unbuckling the seat belt and opening the car door. "Night Lou, Haz. See you tomorrow at school."
"Night Hazel," Harry chirped in, sounding energetic. I chuckled and slammed the door shut and straightened my jacket and waited for Zayn to say his goodbyes and open the gate. It was already around 1 in the morning and I was extremely tired and I had to wake up at around 6.30 tomorrow.
Zayn walked towards me and the gate and Louis' car drove off while Zayn opened the gate and the both of us walked up the driveway silently. He silently opened the front door, careful to not make any noise. He closed the door and locked it silently, then hung the keys on the key hangers  next to the front door.
"You thirsty?" he whispered, his voice making me jump in the darkness.
"Yeah," I replied and he twined his fingers with mine and led me to the kitchen through the darkness. When he let go of my hand his touch left tingles on my skin and I stopped myself from smiling. He turned on a switch and lights shone beneath the top cupboards, giving the kitchen some light. I couldn't exactly see his face in the dimly lighted room but I could see enough to see that he looked tired and slightly pissed off. He opened one of the top drawers and took out two glass cups and a 2L bottle of cold water from the two door-fridge. He filled both of them and slid a glass cup across the marble counter top of the island. I had to slightly bend forwards on the island to get the glass cup.
By the time I had started drinking the water, he had already drank his and was leaning on the kitchen counter next to the fridge, studying me. I put the cup down and looked at him with one eyebrow arched at him.
"What?" I asked him when he didn't say anything.
"What's up with you and Chase?" he asked, quickly getting to the point. I was slightly taken aback by his forwardness.
"Nothing special," I replied and drank the rest of the water and walked over to the sink and placed mine in the sink next to his. I turned around to look at him and noticed he was still in the same position, arms crossed against his chest. "Why do you care, anyway?"
"Curiosity got the better of me, I guess," he replied and I nodded. "You two together?"
"Is that you being curious or a gossip queen?" I asked him sarcastically.
"Curiousity," he replied with a smirk.
And that smirk made everything forgotten. The fight I had with him yesterday night. Sure, I was a little bit angry at him for being the selfish jerk he is but that's Zayn being Zayn and I couldn't really change him and make him someone he wasn't. I just couldn't stay angry at him for a long time, even if I wanted to I just couldn't.
"Nah, I think it's you showing the inner gossipy you," I replied with a smirk.
He rolled his eyes and chuckled, realising that I wasn't still mad at him.
"And to answer your question, yes," I replied quietly but I knew he heard me because his head shot up and he looked at me sadly but quickly covered it up. I rubbed my left eye and yawned.
"Good luck, I guess," he replied after a few seconds of silence.
"Thanks," I replied, studying his face curiously. "I'm gonna go sleep. Night Zayn."
"Night Haze."
With that I turned around and left the kitchen feeling completely confused and all tingly-ish feeling.
Had I made the right choice with Chase?
*
"Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up," this very annoying person kept on bugging me while slightly shaking me to wake up. I knew the voice and I felt like strangling him. "Wake up, wake up, wake up."
"Die in a hole," I replied through gritted teeth and heard him chuckle.
"This beauty cannot be wasted, Princess," he replied and I could practically hear the smirk on his lips, his voice still scratchy due to waking up.
I turned around and saw him slightly bent down, a smirk on his lips. I grabbed my phone and checked what time it was. My eyes widened and I looked up at him, then at the dark sky outside my window and then back up at the still-smirking Zayn with his grey sweatpants and white shirt.
"I will strangle the life out of you, Malik," I said through gritted teeth. It was still 5.30 in the morning and I wasn't supposed to wake up for another hour!
"Sure you will, now get your lazy ass outta bed," he replied and straightened his back.
"No can do, I still have an hour of beauty sleep to do," I replied and plopped my head back down on my very comfortable pillow and turned on my side.
Cold air attacked my skin when I felt my duvet being slid off of me and I whined, turning to look at Zayn. He dumped the duvet on the floor, very far from my reach, unfortunately, and turned to look at me.
"Get up," he replied. "I'm going for a jog before school and you're coming with me."
Before I could reply he left the room and I groaned. After a few minutes of debating on whether or not I should go, I decided that I little exercise wouldn't really hurt so I forced myself to get off my bed and put on a pair of black sweat pants and a white shirt a pair of black slippers and tied my hair up in a pony tail. I looked at the full-length mirror in the guest room and after making sure I looked presentable, I grabbed my phone and went downstairs.
He was waiting for me next to the front door. He opened the door and when the both of us were out he closed the door shut. We both jogged around the huge park close by to our houses around twenty times and then jogged it back home, making sure to take the longer way back to his house. We had taken around an hour and when we arrived back home, he used the en-suite bathroom in his parents bedroom and I used the upstairs bathroom to take a shower.
I put on the black skirt and tights and white shirt and black blouse on top while pulling my straightened hair in a pony tail. I grabbed my bag and went downstairs and quietly into the kitchen where I found Patricia preparing cereal for her younger daughter, Safaa. Safaa looked up at me, her blue eyes studying me then her lips twitched up into a smile. I found myself smiling back at her and then up at Patricia.
"Hungry?" she asked and I shook my head politely. "Do you know if Zayn's ready?"
"No," I replied but at that minute he came down the stairs, throwing his bag next to the front door and walking in the kitchen. He swerved around me, slightly brushing his arm against mine. He grabbed a slice of toast from a plate on the kitchen counter and kissed Patricia's cheek and walked back towards me.
"Let's go," he said and I slightly raised my eyebrows at him. Before I could reply he had already opened the front door waiting for me.
"Bye Patricia, bye Safaa," I said and turned around and we left the house, on the way to school picking Harry up from his house and we met Niall and Jesy at the beginning of the school gates.
I saw Chase on the steps of the front door of the school, chatting up with some guy. The both of them were smiling at something the other guy said then his head turned around, his eyes roaming the students in front of the school then his eyes spotted me and he slightly waved, told something to the guy and then started making his way towards me.
"I'll see you in Art," I told Zayn and before he could reply, I walked towards Chase with a smile. He smiled back and when we reached each other he grabbed my hand and twirled me around and when I faced him again his lips softly met mine. The moment was perfect but as I expected, there weren't any sparks.
And then the bell rang.
He pulled away and looked at something behind me. He slightly raised his eyebrow and I turned my head to look at what he was looking at and I noticed Zayn, looking at us with his jaw set. I furrowed my eyebrows together and looked away from him, feeling my stomach churn.
"I have to get to class, see you in Science," I told Chase and he nodded while pecking my lips and he walked off towards the football pitch since he had extra practise for football practise since he had just got into the team and needed to learn all of their tactics and all of that shit. I didn't wait for the others to walk with me to art class and when Zayn, Louis and Liam entered the art room, I had three seats on one side and two seats on my other side. Zayn sat on one side and Louis and Liam on my other side. I just wanted to bang my head against a wall and break it into tiny little pieces.
PE lesson went by smoothly. We were divided into two groups, fifteen students on both sides, having five students each team as extras on the bencehes. I was placed with Harry, Louis, Niall, Lenni and Sophia with other students. All Sophia did was stay on the side and when the ball was thrown towards her she grabbed it and ran away with it and threw it in the basket without dribbling it and our team ended up losing around thirty points because of her. At least Amber, which was on the other side, had enough brain cells to realise she had to dribble the damn ball. I just wanted to strangle Sophia and then tear her apart.
She could be quite intelligent if she wanted to be but no. She had to act like the dumb blonde head cheerleader bitch she's supposed to act like. But she could say no and act normal and not a total idiotic bitch.
The last two lessons before break were double Science and I was paired up with Zayn and we had to do this chemical experiment  to prepare a soluble salt by some sort of method. After having a quick shower in the school's shower and putting on the school uniform, I walked towards the Chemistry labs and when everyone was in the classroom, our Chemistry teacher gave us each a pair of safety spectacles and a very annoying lab coat.
"Okay everyone, all the needed supplies for both methods are all on your tables and if you need anything extra, just ask me. You have two hours. Goodluck," the teacher announced and everyone was off.
I read over the method we had to follow and breathed out heavily and then looked behind me and saw Chase looking at me with a smile, I smiled back and looked back at the handout in front of me. I looked at Zayn and noticed he was giving the handout a confused look. He looked at me and raised an eyebrow at me.
"Do you know how to do this shit?" he asked and I nodded slightly and grabbed the things we needed for the first step. "Is that supposed to give us those turqouise crystals stuff?"
"Yeah, they're called Copper Chloride," I replied while rolling my eyes.
"Huh, you study too much," he replied and I hit him across the head and he winced.
"It's called common sense and reading it off the handout!" I replied and he pouted, his brown eyes sparkling giving me his puppy dog eyes. I ignored him and started making the solution.
After adding the acid to the copper carbonate in the test tube, the reaction quickly started and I smiled to myself while shaking it slightly by softly turning the test tube's contents with a glass stick. Then filtered the solution into an evaporating basin and placed it on top of a Bunsen burner and waited until some of it was evaporated and then placed the basin next to the window, placing a paper with my name. When I went back to our table, Zayn was still trying to figure out how to fold the filter paper.
Oh Lord.
I snatched the paper out of his hands and folded it for him and handed it to him. He grinned and followed what I did and then placed his next to mine, a paper next to the evaporating basin with his name scribbled across it.
After doing the other two successfully we only had around thirty minutes left and we had to do this white powder together.
"You do the Calcium Nitrate and I do the Sodium Carbonate," I instructed and he nodded. After around ten minutes both solutions were ready and I took one of the bigger test tubes and poured mine in first and then poured in Zayn's solution. Before pouring it in, I looked at the test tube curiously. The solution had to be quite clear but this one looked sort of a faded pink.
"Zayn," I said and his big brown eyes looked at me innocently. "This is pink."
"So?"
"It's supposed to be clear."
"No. It's supposed to be pink."
"No. It's supposed to be clear or else no white powder is going to be formed."
He huffed and took the test tube out of my hands and quickly poured the solution with my clear one and my eyes widened when I saw black bubbles reacted the second the pink solution made contact with the clear solution. The bubbles continued to increase and soon enough they flowed out of the test tube and onto the wooden top. My eyes widened in shock and I looked at Zayn. He mirrored the same expression and before I had a chance to tell our Chemistry teacher what had happened.
The test tube exploded. I screamed and bent down, covering my head with my arms. I heard the girl behind me scream, together with the rest of the girls in the lab. Unfortunately, the test tube exploded in mine and Zayn's direction and we ended up getting everything on us and I could feel some glass shards stuck in my arms
I stood up and looked over at the mess Mr Malik had created with his stubborness. Zayn had stood up too and was looking at his mess. Our Chemistry teacher walked over to us and her eyes widened in shock at the total mess that our table was and then at us, she looked us up and down and her eyes widened further, if that was possible.
"Nurse. Now! You have chemicals and glass on you. Both of you to the nurse's office and you're both excused for this mess," she said quickly, ushering us towards the door. I could feel eyes on the both of us and the wooden door slammed shut behind us.
I groaned and looked at Zayn, waiting for him to lead the way to the Nurse's office. He frowned and pulled out a tiny glass shard form his arm and some blood slowly oozed out. He winced and rubbed at his skin. I looked over my arms and noticed a tiny piece stuck on my wrist. We started walking towards the nurse's office and I tried to pull it out but it actually hurt considering that it wasn't really in that deep and that I still hadn't taken it out. I groaned and Zayn looked at me, then at my wrist.
"Can I?" he asked and I looked at him and when I nodded, he grabbed my wrist and looked at the piece of glass closely. "Um ... it's sort of stuck sideways."
"It's glass, it can get stuck any position it wants to!" I replied through gritted teeth at the pain.
It actually really hurt, it even surprised me at how much it hurt.
"Well yeah, but it's sort of a bit deep and it's a bit thick since it's the top part of the test tube and considering the test tube was thick," he replied and I groaned.
"Just leave it to the nurse," I replied and he softly let go of my wrist and after a few seconds we arrived at the nurse's office.
I went in first and I had to have some butterfly stitches stuck on my wrist and she had to carefully pull the thick glass shard out, then had to clean it with a solution that stung and then covered it with the butterfly stitches. She gave Zayn a face cloth and a bottle with a clear, smelly liquid inside and he had to wipe away and exposed skin during the experiment and she did the same with me, but instead she did it herself since I couldn't move my left wrist that much.
"Try to avoid using your left hand for the rest of the day and in a week you can take the butterfly stitches off," she explained and we both nodded our heads and when we left the nurse's office the bell ran signalling lunch.
I wasn't that much hungry but I had told Chase that I'd stay with him and my group during lunch so I couldn't skip today's lunch and stay in the library doing my homework like I had planned to do. We met the rest of the group at the usual table and noticed Chase at the lunch line, picking out a pizza.
"Can Chase stay with us?" I asked the whole group and Zayn's head snapped in my direction. He was nibbling on his sandwich but didn't reply.
"Yeah, of course!" Louis replied with a wink. "You two are together now, no?"
I nodded and felt my cheeks lightly heat up.
"Then he can but he does one wrong move and I'll beat him up," Harry mumbled under his breath but I heard him and I chuckled. I turned my head and saw Chase was looking at me as he held up his tray and walked away from the line. I motioned my hand for him to come over and I sat down, signalling for him to sit down with us.
He nodded and started walking towards us but his head looked at the cheerleaders table, where Sophia was. His expression turned stone and I wasn't exactly sure at whom he was looking at. When he turned his head back and saw me, his face expression turned into sadness but quickly covered it up with a smile.
When he sat down I talked to him as usual and with the rest of the group. He interacted with all of them quite well and when Sophia came over to stay with Zayn for awhile, Chase didn't even look up at her and check her out like all of the male population in this school does.
All the time I had a fake smile on and none of them saw through it but all the time I kept on thinking and thinking at how Chase's expression turned from smiling to stone cold to sadness to smiling to ignoring one of the hottest girls in this school and back to smiling like nothing was wrong.
He was hiding something and I knew that I had something to do with it.
Don't take notice of the experiment they do in Chemistry lab, half of it is true and the other half of the pink solution and black bubbles and exploding test tube and all isn't true ... I think. I made that up.
