She didnât mean anything else by her words, but upon hearing them, the three little ones couldnât help but feel a bit nervous.
Penny pursed her lips, cautiously asking, âMommy, donât you want us to get along well with Grandma and Grandpa? If you donât like it, weâ¦â
Neera blinked and hastily replied, âDonât overthink it, guys. I feel that this is quite nice.â
The little ones exchanged glances, then confirmed with her once more. âReally?â
Neera chuckled. âYes, really. Why would I lie to you?â
Penny hummed in acknowledgment. âWe thought you were still upset about the past, considering how much Grandma and Grandpa had hurt youâ¦â
Neera teased them on purpose, âOh, am I such a petty person in your eyes?â
The three little ones immediately denied in unison, âNo, no, absolutely not! Mommy, you are so generous and beautiful, kind-hearted and gentle. How could we ever think that way? You must not slander us!â
Neera chuckled. âWow, seems like you guys have really been learning all sorts of praise words lately.â
Scratching the back of his head, Sammy chuckled sheepishly. âNo, not at all.â
Neera stood by the bed with a gentle expression, looking at the night scene outside. In a soft and gentle voice, she said, âAdult matters have nothing to do with you children. No matter what happened in the past, itâs all over now. Your grandparents are kind to you, so you need to behave and not cause trouble, understand?â
The little ones hummed in agreement, behaving so well it was almost unbelievable.
âMommy, we know that. Grandpa and Grandma⦠Theyâve changed a lot recently, especially Grandma.â
Naturally, Neera knew all this, but she didnât say anything.
However, just as she was about to hang up the phone, Wrenn, who had entered the study to bring the children a fruit platter, saw them on the phone and quickly took over the call.
She gave the little ones a meaningful look, then walked out with the phone in hand.
There was no sound from the other end of the phone. She asked tentatively, her tone very gentle, âNeera, are you still there?â
Neera was silent for a moment before she responded, âIâm still here. Is there something you need?â
Wrenn chuckled, her tone somewhat ingratiating. âNeera, I heard you got hurt. How are you you feeling better? Is there any discomfort left? You always try to act tough. Some things you should try to endure, but not everything, especially health issues. You shouldnât just grit your teeth and bear it. Isnât Jean with you? No matter what happens, just tell him and let him take care of you. You mustnât overwork yourselfâ¦â
The moment she opened her mouth, she couldnât help but start babbling non-stop with advice.
Neera listened quietly, her mind serene. When the older woman finished speaking, she gently responded with, âYes, I understand.â
Even though Neeraâs reply was quite indifferent, Wrenn was still pleasantly surprised and overjoyed, her eyes lighting up with happiness.
For her, the fact that Neera was willing to respond to her and listen to her chatter was already more than enough.
âGood, good, as long as you understand,â she said, her voice tinged with an excitement she couldnât contain. âI wonât bother you anymore. Rest well, and remember, no matter how big the problem, itâs not as important as your health. Leave everything to Jean. Once heâs done handling things there, you two should come back earlier. Iâll make nourishing soup for you every day to help you recuperate. Also, the children miss you a lotâ¦â
Neera fell silent for a moment before correcting her, âToo much of anything is never good. Over-
supplementation is not good either.â
After speaking, she realized her words were somewhat cold and harsh. Pursing her lips, she added softly, âBut, thank you anyway.â
Wrenn was momentarily stunned and needed a moment to recover. She was deeply moved, her eyes even reddening a bit.
She nodded repeatedly, her words stumbling over each other. âOh my, whatâs this about thanking me?
You silly girl, always so polite when clearly⦠clearly weâre familyâ¦â
No sooner had she spoken these words than she felt a vague unease, as if she had been somewhat rash. A sudden anxiety stirred within her, fearing that Neera might feel uncomfortable upon hearing this or that she might have said something that would cause the atmosphere to become tense.
However, Neera didnât mind, simply saying, âI should still express my gratitude. Thank you for taking the trouble to look after the children.â
Wrennâs eyes reddened again. âDonât be such a stranger. I am their grandmother; itâs my duty to do these things. Moreover, they are very well-behaved, never causing the slightest trouble at home. They are the joy of our familyâ¦â
Just as Neera hung up the phone, Jean returned.
âWho were you talking to?â he asked casually.
Neera turned to look at him. âYour mother.â
Upon hearing this, a hint of surprise flashed in Jeanâs eyes. After a moment of hesitation, he said, âIf you donât want to answer her calls in the future, you donât have to. Iâll talk to her about it.â
Neera chuckled. âWhy wouldnât I answer her calls? After all, sheâs not a ferocious beast.â
Jean steadily gazed at her, his eyes harboring a trace of complex emotions.
âAll right, letâs not talk about this anymore.â Neera reached out her hand toward him. âIâm so hungry.
What delicious food are we having tonight?â
Jean took her hand, leading her outside. âIâm not sure either. I was busy in the study earlier. Come, letâs go down and see.â
10:49 Wed, 6 Dec The two of them descended the stairs, chatting and laughing. To their surprise, they found the living room coffee table piled high with all sorts of gift boxes.
By looking at the packaging, one could tell that they definitely contained items of great value.
Neera asked curiously, âWhat are all these?â
Chad smiled and lifted his chin toward Jean. âShouldnât you be asking him?â
There was a hint of confusion in Jeanâs eyes as well. âI donât know what those are either. Who sent these?â
This time, Chad was indeed a bit surprised.
âYou donât know? It was your familyâs private plane that specially flew these over. When the border supervisor informed me, you were busy, so I didnât disturb you. I directly sent someone to pick them up.
These are all supplements. I thought you had them sent over on purpose to help Neera nourish her body.â
Jean shook his head. âI didnât arrange for this.â
He opened one of the boxes and glanced inside, discovering that the supplements within were quite rare to come by.
After some thought, he ventured a guess, âIt must have been sent by my mom.â
Neera blinked and remained silent.
Chad and Adriana exchanged glances, both finding it somewhat unbelievable. âHow did she know?â
Jeanâs expression showed a hint of helplessness.
âShe was worried about Neera, so she specifically had someone hack into Phisonâs intranet. When she found out that Neera was in trouble and injured, she even called to ask about it. She must have sent these.â
After he finished speaking, he glanced at Neera.
For a moment, the latter didnât know what to say.
Adriana muttered under her breath, âThis isnât some backwater country. We do have supplements here too, you know.â
Her impression of Wrenn was still quite unfavorable.
However, she didnât want to be too harsh. Clearing her throat, she added, âBut the fact that sheâs willing to think this way shows she cares. Jean, please thank her for us.â
Jean nodded. âSure.â
Neera lowered her gaze to glance at all these supplements, finding herself inexplicably amused yet exasperated.
âWith all these things, it will indeed add quite a bit of weight when itâs time for us to leave here.
In other words, she had accepted the gifts.
The corner of Jeanâs lips curled up slightly. âThatâs easy to resolveâ¦â
