He had thought something was off about what Phoebe had said earlier. It turned out his hunch was true!
Rio hesitated before saying, âMr. Cox, I apologize. In truth, I should have informed you about this matter as soon as you regained consciousness. I should have also punished Phoebe immediately after the incident. However, she is, after all, your cousinâ¦â
âCousin? Hah!â
Avery laughed coldly, his eyes seemingly covered with a layer of frost.
âFrom this moment forward, I no longer have this cousin.â
She dared to harbor thoughts of harming Neera? It seems Iâve been too lenient with her!
âIrwin, announce this to the entire Cox family: from this day forward, Phoebe is no longer a member of the Cox family. Sheâs to be chased out of the Cox residence today. I do not wish to see her ever again!â
Irwin nodded, then turned and ascended the stairs.
Rio and Ronald still wore hesitant expressions.
âMr. Cox, must you really be so ruthless? Granted, Phoebe was in the wrong, but no matter what, she is still Albertâs adopted daughter. If Albert were to find out about this, I fear he would kick up a fussâ¦â
Avery glanced at them. âAm I supposed to be afraid of him? How much has he leeched off the Cox family over the years? And he still has the audacity to seek justice from me? Also, you call me ruthless? Then what about Phoebe? Was what she did to Neera not ruthless? Donât forget, she intended to put Neera in mortal danger!â
At this point, both Rio and Ronald fell silent.
They could tell that Avery was resolute. There was no room for negotiation in this matter.
After all, it was Phoebe who had gone too far in this matter. To end up in this predicament, one could only say that she got what she deserved, and she had no one else to blame but herself.
However, Phoebe didnât see it that way.
When she saw Irwin barge in, demanding her to pack up and leave the Cox residence immediately, she was utterly stunned.
Just a moment ago, she was pondering how to persuade Avery to let her go. But now, she found herself facing an even more despairing predicament.
âHow can this be? Impossible⦠This is impossible! Thereâs no way Avery would banish me! I am the young lady of the Cox family, the daughter of his third uncle, his own cousin. Why would he drive me out of the Cox family?â
Irwin remained unmoved, even becoming somewhat annoyed.
âWhy donât you ask yourself what youâve done? You know the answer better than anyone else. Mr. Cox doesnât believe a single word of the lies you spewed earlier. If you know whatâs best for you, youâd better start packing your things and leave this place. Mr. Cox is already showing you mercy by not forcing you to leave empty-handed. This is the last bit of respect heâs giving you. If you still donât appreciate it, Iâm afraid you wonât get anything at all.â
Phoebe shook her head, her face full of astonishment, still unwilling to believe that this was the truth.
âImpossible! I canât believe it! I donât believe Avery could be so cruelâ¦â she murmured to herself.
She abruptly dashed out, descending the stairs in a fluster.
The speed of her movements was so swift that even Irwin couldnât react in time. Before he could stop her, she had vanished from his sight.
âAvery, Avery!â Phoebe descended the stairs, calling out to Avery twice. Just as she was about to say something, she noticed Rio and Ronald were also present.
In an instant, she understood everything. Surprise and anxiety swamped her.
She had made it a point to find out today that both Rio and Ronald were off to deal with the chaos caused by several other factions, and they wouldnât be back for a couple of days.
Therefore, she decided to take a risk, taking the initiative to bring up the matter herself, hoping to seize the advantage, twist the truth, and completely cover up the incident.
Who would have thought that these two would actually come back at the last minute?
She had been gambling all along, betting that they wouldnât dare to speak about this matter out of respect for her status.
After Avery woke up, she waited anxiously for several days. When they still didnât bring up the matter, she naturally assumed that she had won the bet.
In her view, Rio and Ronald didnât want to create any unpleasantness with her father over this matter.
Besides, the Cox family was currently in a period of turmoil. There was really no need to bring up this matter again.
Who would have thought, despite all her careful calculations, she still got it wrong!
It seemed that the two elderly men must have said something, which led Avery to change his mind and decide to expel her from the Cox family!
Immediately, she gritted her teeth and raised her voice to defend herself.
âAvery, did they say something to you? Is that why youâre being so harsh on me? Theyâve all been déceived by Neera; what theyâre saying isnât true at all!â
Rio and Ronald exchanged glances, both furrowing their brows.
Avery stared at her with cold eyes, his expression icy. âDeceive? Phoebe, do you think thereâs still a need for you to argue now?â
Phoebe was so anxious that her face turned red.
âIâm not making excuses, really! I know that Neera doesnât like me. She must have said many bad things about me, even maliciously speculating about my intentions and painting me in a bad light. Mr.
Rio, Mr. Ronald, you mustnât be deceived by her!â
