Thinking of Neeraâs pale face from earlier, Jean couldnât help but worry. After a moment of consideration, he took the initiative and suggested, âLet me go in and help her.â
Adriana was puzzled. âYou donât know medicine. How can i help her?â
âHer condition doesnât look very good after such a long time. Iâm worried something might happen.
Even if I canât be of much help, Iâll just stay by her side. Or I could assist her with some minor tasks, allowing her to take a brief rest and relax a bit.â
Adriana also had Neeraâs situation on her mind. Hearing this, she actually found it feasible.
The Cox family didnât object. After changing into a sterile surgical gown, Jean entered the medical room.
Neera was startled when she heard a noise and turned around to find him standing there.
âHow did you get in? This is the medical room. You canât just come and go as you please. You need to leave immediately.â
Jean grabbed her hand as she tried to push him away, holding it firmly without a word.
âI canât leave you alone, so Iâll stay here with you. Donât worry. I wonât cause any trouble.
Neera felt a bit helpless. âIâm fine. You donât need to come inâ¦â
Jean insisted, âI canât rest easy.â
Neera had no choice but to go with him.
Indeed, Jeanâs worries were proven to be justified.
During this time, Neera zoned out a few times, nearly reaching her limit, and almost fainted on the spot.
Luckily, Jean was there. He caught her in time and made her sit down to rest.
âYour condition is really bad right now. You canât keep going like this. Iâll keep an eye out for you, and Iâll call you immediately if anything happens. You should get some sleep.â
Neera was reluctant, which almost made Jean lose his temper with her.
âAre you pushing yourself so hard that youâre disregarding your own health? You havenât had a proper rest in days. Are you planning to keep going until you end up in a hospital? What if something happens to Avery while youâre passed out? Even if you donât think about yourself, you should consider your patients, and me, and the children, and all the people who care about you.â
Upon hearing his words, Neera was left speechless. Faced with his stern expression, tinged with a hint of anger, she eventually admitted defeat.
âAll right, Iâll rest against the chair for a bit. If thereâs any change in Averyâs condition or if the monitor shows any changes in reading, you must wake me up.â
Seeing that she finally heeded his advice, Jean breathed a sigh of relief. âAll right.â
And so, Neera leaned against the chair, her head tilted slightly, and closed her eyes.
The moment she relaxed, the taut strings in her mind seemed to snap, plunging her instantly into the boundless darkness. She quickly fell into a deep slumber.
Jean watched as her head kept tilting to one side. He walked over, stood beside her, and gently turned her head toward him, allowing half of her body to lean against his own.
And there he was, maintaining his position, not daring to move, for fear of waking her up.
When the alarm of the vital signs monitor on Averyâs body first sounded, Neera was sleeping so deeply that she didnât hear a thing.
Although Jean was reluctant, he knew it was a matter of life and death, so he immediately woke her up.
âNeera, wake up. Averyâs heartbeat is getting weaker and weaker!â
Neeraâs mind suddenly became incredibly clear.
She hastily stood up, but her legs gave way, nearly causing her to topple forward.
âWatch out!â With sharp eyes and quick reflexes, Jean swiftly caught her around the waist. âAre you okay?â
Neera nodded, disregarding everything else. She stumbled a bit as she made her way to the bedside.
Averyâs heart rate dropped rapidly, and in the blink of an eye, his heartbeat abruptly stopped.
On the monitor, the original curve instantly turned into a straight line.
The sound heralding death was so piercing to the ear.
Neeraâs face turned ashen. She quickly started performing chest compressions on him. After his heartbeat faintly stirred back to life, she continued with the resuscitation efforts.
This kind of situation had occurred three times in the past two days.
Even though Neera had performed a major blood transfusion for him, the toxins had already infiltrated his organs, damaging some of his internal organs, and his heart had also suffered a certain degree of damage. Therefore, this life-threatening situation could very likely occur.
Fortunately, Neeraâs superb medical skills brought Avery back from the brink of death.
Forty-eight hours had passed, and all of Averyâs vital signs had returned to normal levels. His heartbeat had also stabilized.
Day turned into night, and night back into day. By the time Neera stepped out of the medical room, it was deep into the night again.
The members of the Cox and Gordon families hadnât left; they were still waiting in the corridor, just as they were two days ago when she came out. The only difference was the absence of Albert.
Under the tense scrutiny of everyone, she was utterly exhausted, yet âMr. Cox is now out of danger and his condition is stable. Everyou. The managed to muster a faint smile.
can rest assured.â
Rio and Ronald were overwhelmed with excitement, continuously expressing their words of gratitude.
Violet, too, was moved to tears of joy, and she hugged Neera with all her strength.
âThank you, Neenie. Thank you for keeping Satan alive.â
After she finished speaking, she rushed into the medical room to see Avery.
Chad and Adriana also let out a long sigh as if a heavy burden had been lifted from their shoulders.
âNeera, youâve done a great job. Youâve worked-Neera!â
Before Chad could finish his sentence, his face suddenly changed as he cried out Neeraâs name.
Adriana was also terrified, the color draining rapidly from her face as she hurriedly rushed forward.
Neera staggered a couple of steps, seemingly trying to sit down on the bench. But before she could even touch it, she uncontrollably fell to the ground, slipping into unconsciousness.
