Adriana examined the small wounds on her palm and reflected on her shoulder injury, which made her sigh in frustration.
âI had hoped to provide you with a peaceful life as a girl, but your uncle insisted on passing the familyâs leadership to you, exposing you to numerous dangers and repeated attacks. I canât believe he⦠If you werenât safe and sound now, I would have definitely argued with your uncle.â
Neeraâs heart was warmed by these words, but she also found them amusing.
âDonât worry about that. Youâve come a long way to be able to live happily with your love. I donât want to be the one to ruin your relationship.â
Adriana snorted. âRegardless, this position was forced upon you by him. If anything happens to you, I will definitely confront him!â
Neera smiled faintly. âLook, Iâm fine. Besides, I want to help both of you. You and Uncle Chad have missed so many years together. Now that you finally have the chance to be together, it would be a shame if heâs still entangled with the Gordon familyâs affairs and canât break free. I can see that he wants to spend all his remaining time with you. I also want you two to live happily and undisturbed. So, this is my own choice, not something he forced upon me.â
Adriana looked at her, her eyes soft and gentle. âMy dear girl⦠youâre always so sensible.â
As the conversation continued, the topic naturally shifted to Neeraâs love life.
âEnough about me, letâs talk about you.â
Neera blinked. âMe? What is there to talk about?â
Adriana chuckled lightly, playfully poking Neera on the forehead. âDonât think you can avoid the question. How are things between you and Avery now? I can tell that he really likes you. He has gone above and beyond to protect you this time. What do you think of him?â
Upon hearing the name Avery, the three little ones who were skipping ahead suddenly slowed down, their ears perked up to listen carefully to the conversation behind them.
âAbout Mr. Coxâ¦â Neera murmured thoughtfully, âHeâs a good man. Iâm grateful for all the kindness he has shown me and Iâm always thinking about how I can repay him.â
âIs it just gratitude? I think he doesnât care about you repaying your debt, nor does he want you to always keep your distance.â
âHe might not care, but I do.â
Neera took a moment to gather her thoughts, then expressed her stance in a gentle voice.
âHe and I are neither relatives nor particularly close friends. Itâs only because of Uncle Chadâs relationship with him that I have received so much help from him. Naturally, I owe him a debt of gratitude.â
With just one sentence, the distance between Neera and Avery seemed to have grown even further.
Adriana wasnât surprised.
âI understand that you donât have feelings for him. No matter what he does, he canât win your heart. In fact, your uncle and I have thought about this too. Even with what happened between you and Jean, you still wouldnât accept Avery. So, we have no intention of forcing this marriage on you. Do as you please, but what is all this commotion. Iâm hearing about in Phison?â
The topic reminded Neera of her predicament.
âWhen I first arrived at the Gordon residence, Mr. Cox used our engagement as a guarantee to secure my position and dispel the doubts of the Bartitsu Guild. I never expected that this matter would attract so much attention in Phison, and Iâm still figuring out how to resolve itâ¦.
Adriana smiled slightly. âYou donât need to worry about cleaning up the mess. Avery is a responsible man. He will naturally handle the matter satisfactorily. As for being the talk of the town, itâs only natural.
After all, Avery is an outstanding bachelor. Whether itâs his looks, family background, or abilities, he excels in every aspect. Heâs the cream of the crop, naturally attracting a lot of attention. He might even be the dream lover of countless girls. Itâs just that you didnât fall for him.â
As she spoke, she paused for a moment, then smiled suggestively.
âWell, it isnât surprising. After being with a man as outstanding as Jean, itâs hard for anyone else to catch your eye. After all, thereâs no one quite like him.â
Whenever Neera thought of Jean, her heart would flutter uncontrollably, and a smile would subconsciously appear on her lips.
Upon noticing this, Adriana had an epiphany and asked, âHave you two⦠made up?â
Neera bit her lip lightly, nodded, and felt inexplicably shy.
Seeing this, Adriana was genuinely happy for her.
âIt seems you have resolved the conflicts in your heart, which puts me at ease. I can tell that Jean loves you deeply, valuing you above all else. What happened in the past wasnât intentional on his part. It was a series of unfortunate misunderstandings. On the bright side, it might have been destinyâs way of bringing you two together. Even though it started out as a mistake, it blossomed into something beautiful. It wasnât in vain after all. You two are truly meant to be.â
Neera nodded gently, her eyes glistening with tender joy.
âI have been thinking these past few days. Fate has brought him to me and blessed me with the most adorable children. As the past cannot be changed, I shouldnât dwell on it. Instead, I should look forward and focus more on the present and the future. Moreover, after everything that has happened, I have come to understand my own heart. I donât want to lose him.â
