The phone only rang for a few seconds before it was answered.
Neera was quite surprised. âHey, isnât it five in the morning back in the country? Why are you awake so early?â
Jean stood on the balcony, gazing at the night sky of Phison. He grunted in response. âYou know itâs five in the morning, so why are you calling me at this hour?â
Neera hesitated as she played with her finger on the bedsheet. She whispered, âI just wanted to see if you were awake.â
Jeanâs eyes held a profound tenderness. He pretended not to understand and asked, âYou havenât contacted me for some time. Why are you suddenly calling so early?â
Neera was aware that she was in the wrong and felt somewhat guilty.
âHey, why are you so distant? Are you upset? Is it because I didnât call you in these past few days?â
On the other end, Jean listened to her cautious inquiry. Holding back a smile, he asked indifferently, âWhat do you think?â
Neera pouted. âIâve been busy these days. I was dead tired when I got back, so I took a nap. I only woke up this afternoon, and I called you as soon as I could. Donât be madâ¦â
At this point, she had completely forgotten about the previous arguments between them.
Jeanâs heart nearly melted when he heard her soft voice. He was utterly captivated, and he couldnât help but smile.
This little fool is quite easy to fool.
As he remained silent, Neera assumed he was still upset, so she continued to whine.
âDonât be angry, okay? Even though I couldnât contact you, Iâve been thinking about you every day.
Didnât you feel it? Hmm?â
Jean couldnât resist her coaxing and quickly gave in. âIâm not mad. I was just teasing you. Neera, I miss you a lot.â
His tender voice was laced with laughter.
Neeraâs heart raced wildly as though something had struck her.
âHmmâ¦â Her cheeks flushed as she smiled happily. âI miss you too. I really, really miss youâ¦â
The two poured out their hearts to each other, exchanging sweet nothings for a while. Suddenly, Jean asked, âWhat have you been busy with these days? You didnât even have time to call. Donât tell me youâve locked yourself in the lab again?â
Neera hesitated and didnât know how to respond.
She chose to hide the truth to avoid making him worry.
âItâs nothing much, just an election activity in Phison. As the head of the Gordon family, I got involved.â
Jean asked again, âWas it dangerous? Did you get hurt?â
Neera immediately denied, âNot really, itâs not that dangerous. I had someone protecting me. I didnât get hurt, so donât worry.â
âReally?â
âOf course!â
Afraid that he would dig deeper, Neera quickly changed the topic.
âRight! Speaking of which, I almost made a mistake.â
Jean sighed inwardly. He was defeated by her strong and mature demeanor. He decided not to press further, simply going along with her.
âWhat mistake? Tell me about it.â
Neera chuckled, a little embarrassed. âThis time, I received protection from the Gordon family, and I also encountered a very kind family. They were all good people and provided us with a lot of help. They protected us no matter what happened. Among them, there was a man named Darcel Belma. At first, I thought he was you!â
Upon hearing this, Jean raised an eyebrow. âOh? Does that person look a lot like me?â
âNot really. Your appearances are completely different, but your auras are somewhat similar. I think he must be following their family headâs orders, which was why he took special care of me. During the election, if it werenât for his help, I donât know what would have happened. At first, I even thought he was you. But it turned out I was mistaken. Fortunately, I didnât ask directly. Otherwise, it would have been embarrassingâ¦â
Listening to her chatter, Jean couldnât help but smile.
This little fool has sharp intuition. She almost caught me.
âYou need to thank him later. But how were you so sure he wasnât me?â
âUmâ¦â
Neera pondered her response carefully. âWell, he got hurt while protecting me. When I was tending to his injuries, I noticed a lot of old scars on his body. That was how I realized I had made a mistake.â
Jean narrowed his gaze and teased her.
âOh? So, youâre saying you undressed him?â
Neera blushed and felt a bit awkward.
âWhere is your mind wandering off to? Itâs just a shirt, and I only took it off to treat his injuries. A doctor doesnât pay much attention to such things when treating patients, right? Besides, back when we first met, I also did acupuncture for you.â
Jean let out a soft hum.
Neera asked, âHey, youâre not getting jealous, are you?â
Jean drawled, âWhat if I am? How do you plan to make it up to me?â
Neera couldnât help but laugh. âWhy are you being jealous over something like this? A grown man like you acting so childishlyâ¦â
Jean was unbothered. âWhatâs wrong with being a little childish when it comes to matters related to you?â
The words spoken were incredibly sweet. Neera felt as if she had fallen into a honey jar, her entire being bubbling with happiness.
âOkay. Be good and donât get jealous. Iâll bring you a gift when I get back.â
As she was comforting him as though he were a child, Jean smiled tenderly.
âThe gift isnât important. You returning to my side is the best gift of all.â
