28.
you were heat
a thick, woolen jacket
clinging to my skin
on a burning summer's day,
sweat beads ran along my skin
and freely fell.
unlike me -
enclosed in this prison
you were keeping me in.
your grip so tight,
I was almost suffocating.
my efforts so weak
to pull you off me,
to rip you from your hold on me.
you stayed.
the sun continued blazing
and I was the world's biggest idiot
with a layered coat.
you made me look stupid
and no matter how hard I tried
you didn't leave
until rain came.
when the clouds gathered
for a cry in the sky,
you were gone.
and I shivered.
it was cold,
and the thought of your return
when the bad weather was gone
sent chills racing through my system
worse than any low temperature
would cause.
because that's how you worked-
suffocating my good days,
until rain came pouring out of them
leaving me alone and broken
to dwell on the damage you did
on the bad days.
you were heat.
