Iâm still fuming as I walk into the media building several hours after storming out of Loganâs house. Normally I donât stay angry for long, but this time Iâm having trouble expelling the volatile energy coursing inside me. I canât believe he actually thinks Iâll dump him once heâs in Munsen full-time. That Iâll throw him away like an old busted-up toy and find something shiny and new to play with.
Jerk.
When I burst into the station, I spot Morris in the producerâs booth, balancing the telephone handset on his shoulder as he jots something down on a notepad. I frown, noticing that Pace and Evelyn are already in their seats in the other booth. Pace snaps his earphones over the backward baseball cap on his head, while Evelyn bends over a sheet of paper in concentration.
Am I late? I glance at the clock on the far wall. Nope. Iâm early, actually. So why is Morris in my booth?
I take a step forward, only to halt when Daisy wanders out of the back corridor. She pushes her bangs off her foreheadâtheyâre neon-blue nowâand grins sheepishly when she sees me.
âHey,â I greet my roommate. âWhat are you doing here?â She doesnât usually hang out at the station unless sheâs supposed to host or produce, and I know for a fact sheâs scheduled to do neither today.
âHey.â For some reason, she looks almostâ¦guilty. âI just popped in to drop off coffee for everyone.â
âSince when are you the station gofer?â I narrow my eyes. âYour shirt is inside out.â I pause. âAnd backwards.â
She glances at her tank top, wincing when she notices the tag sticking out from her collarbone. Then her eyes flit toward the producerâs booth.
I follow her gaze, gasping when I find Morris grinning at us. âHoly shit. You and Morris are hooking up?â
Daisy sighs. âMaybe.â
My anger at Logan is momentarily eclipsed by her news. Our schedules are so hectic that Daisy and I are hardly ever in our room at the same time, which works out great for when I want privacy, but it also means I miss out on girl talk and up-to-date gossip.
âSince when?â I squeal in excitement.
âA couple weeks now?â She shrugs. âI didnât tell you because weâve both been so busy. Youâre cool with it, though, right?â
âOf course. Why wouldnât I be?â
âYou know, because you and Morris went out.â
I laugh. âOnce. And my behaviour didnât exactly warrant a second date. I think this is awesome. You totally just made my dayâand trust me, my day has been shit, so it really needed to be made.â
âOh no. What happened?â
My bad mood returns like an unwanted rash. âI got in a fight with Logan. And thatâs all Iâm saying on the subject, because if I talk about it right now, itâll just piss me off again and then Iâll be too distracted to produce Dumb and Dumberâs show.â
We both glance at the main booth, where Evelyn is using the reflection on her water glass to check her makeup, dabbing delicately at her eye shadow. Pace is engrossed with his phone, his chair tipped back so far that I predict a very loud disaster in the near future.
âGod, I love them,â Daisy says with a snicker. âI donât think Iâve ever met two more self-absorbed people.â
Morris saunters out of the booth and wanders over to us. He notices Daisyâs shirt and says, âSweetheart, weâre at work. Show some decorum.â
âSays the guy who ripped this shirt off me in the supply closet.â Rolling her eyes, she takes a step away. âIâm going to make myself presentable in the bathroom. Iâd do it out here, but Iâm scared Dumber might take a picture and post it on a porn site.â
âWait, the names Dumb and Dumber actually correspond to each of them?â Morris says in surprise. âI thought it was more of a general thing. Which one is Dumber?â
The second the question leaves his mouth, a muffled crash reverberates from the booth, and we all turn to see Pace tangled up on the floor. Yup, the guy who spent an hour regaling me about his cow-tipping days back in Iowa? Tipped himself right over.
From behind the glass, Pace bounces to his feet, notices us staring, and mouths the words, âIâm okay!â
Morris sighs. âI withdraw the question.â
As Daisy leaves to fix her shirt, Morris casually follows me to the booth door. âFirst callerâs already on hold,â he tells me. âI screened her and wrote her info on the sheet.â
My forehead creases. âDid you open the lines before I got here?â
He wears a sheepish look. âNot on purpose. I was calling my dad and pressed the wrong button, and then the phone rang and I was already in there so I took the callerâs info. Sheâs got an urgent G-spot question for Evelyn, so this should be interesting.â
âIsnât it always?â I say with a grin.
I take my seat and conduct my pre-show check. The blinking lights on the phone tell me there are more callers waiting to be screened. I chat with the first one, verify his motives, then send him back on hold. Iâm about to screen the next one when Pace and Evelyn kick off the show.
âWhatâs up, broskis!â Pace greets the radio audience. âYouâre listening to Whatcha Need with Pace âN Evelyn.â
Cringing, Evelyn leans into her microphone. âBefore we start, Iâd like to ask everyone to speak in their indoor voices today, because I am currently sporting a brutal hang-over.â She glares at her co-host. âIâm talking to you, asswipe.â
And so it begins.
âLetâs chat with our first caller,â Pace says cheerfully. âWho we talking to right now?â
Since Iâm not eager to listen to Evelyn talk about G-spots, I lean forward to take another call, only to freeze in my chair when a familiar voice wafts out of the speaker over the door.
âHey, this is Logan.â
My pulse speeds up.
Oh God.
What the hell is he doing?
âTell us whatcha need, my man.â
My boyfriend audibly clears his throat. âWell, hereâs the thing, Pace. And Evelynâhey, Evelyn, female opinion definitely appreciated. Iâm hoping you guys can give me some advice on how to win my girl back.â
Pace chuckles into the mic. âOoooh boy. Someone found themselves in the dog house?â
âBig-time,â Logan confirms.
âWhatâd you do to piss off your lady? We need the deets before we dispense the wisdom.â
Every inch of me tenses as I await Loganâs response. God. I canât believe heâs about to air our dirty laundry on this stupid campus show.
âLong story short? I projected my own fears and insecurities on her, and made some presumptions that I probably shouldnâtââ
âGonna stop you right there, broski,â Pace says, rubbing his scruffy beard growth in dismay. âYou just threw around a lot of big words. How âbout you dumb it down for usâI mean, for peeps who might not be good with the English language. Shout out to all our ESL listeners out there!â
A laugh rips out of my throat. Oh, Pace. Never change.
Logan sounds like heâs trying not to laugh as he rephrases himself. âBottom line? I screwed up. I said some stupid shit I didnât mean, it pissed her off, and she stormed off.â
Pace sighs. âBitches be cray.â
âHey, Logan?â Evelyn drawls.
âYeah?â
âYou sound hot. Are you sure you even want this chick? Because Iâm free tonight if youâre interested.â
A strangled cough fills the airwaves. âUm. Uh, thanks for the offer. But yeah, I want her.â He pauses. âIâm in love with her.â
My heart soars like a kite in the wind. Heâs in love with me?
Then it sinks like a stone. Wait. What if heâs only saying it because I said I loved him?
âIâve been in love with her for a few months now,â he continues, and his husky confession re-inflates my heart. âI didnât tell her because I didnât want to scare her off by saying it too soon.â
âDude, you shouldâve told her.â
Iâm startled by Paceâs earnest response. Touched, even. At least until he finishes that sentence.
âIf you say it right off the bat, they drop their panties super-fast. Means you donât have to put as much work into bagging them.â
âUh-huh,â Logan says as if heâs in agreement, but Iâve known him long enough to be able to pick up on his sarcasm. âAnyway, this girlâ¦sheâs the love of my life. Sheâs smart and funny and unbelievably compassionate. She forgives people even when they donât deserve it. Sheââ
âGood lay?â Pace interrupts.
âOh yeah. The best.â
God, my cheeks are on fire now.
âBut the sex is just icing,â Logan says softly. âItâs everything else that matters most.â
A shadow crosses my peripheral vision. I turn my head expecting to see Daisy or Morris on the other side of the glass door.
My breath hitches when my gaze locks with Loganâs. Heâs on his cell phone, wearing faded jeans and his hockey jacket, and his blue eyes shine with sincerity.
Our esteemed hosts notice him as well, and a gasp echoes in the air.
âWaitâweâve been talking to John Logan?â Evelyn shrieks.
âWaitâyouâre talking about Gretchen?â Pace exclaims, his gaze darting like a Ping-Pong ball from me to Logan.
âNo, Iâm talking about Grace,â Logan says, smiling at me through the glass. âGrace Elizabeth Ivers. The woman I love.â
I donât know whether to stand up on my chair and shout out âI love you too,â or hide under the desk in embarrassment. Big, public displays freak me out. If I owned a cloak of invisibility, Iâd wear it every time a birthday or some other major event rolled around, because I hate, hate, hate being the center of attention.
But I canât tear my eyes off Logan. I canât breathe, or move, or form a single thought other than He loves me.
âAnyway, Iâm hanging up now,â Logan tells the hosts. âIâm pretty sure I can take it from here.â
The line cuts off, and I shoot a panicky glance at the switchboard. Shit. The show is still on the air. Iâm supposed to put on the next caller.
To my relief, Morris appears, giving Logan a friendly thump on the arm as he hurries into the producerâs booth. âGo,â Morris orders. âIâll cover the rest of the show.â
âAre you sure?â
He grins. âThat was always the plan. Who do you think screened the call, Gretch?â He points to the door. âGo.â
I donât need to be told twice.
I hurry out of the booth and throw my arms around Loganâs strong shoulders. âI cannot believe you just did that,â I blurt out.
As his laughter tickles the top of my head, his arms slide down to my hips, large hands curling around my waist. âI figured nothing short of a grand gesture would convince you how shitty I feel about what happened earlier.â
I pull back, tipping my head to meet his gorgeous eyes. âYou should feel shitty,â I chastise. âI canât believe you said all that stuff. I donât plan on ever breaking up with you.â
âGood. Because Iâm never breaking up with you.â He brings one hand to my cheek, stroking it with infinite tenderness. âActually, I think Iâm going to marry you one day.â
Shock jolts through me. âWhat?â
âOne day,â he repeats when he sees my expression. âI mean it, Grace, Iâm in this for the long haul. You still have two years left at Briar, and Iâll be in Munsen during that time, but I promise you, Iâll come see you as often as I can. Every available second I have will be yours.â His voice thickens. âIâm yours.â
I swallow a lump of emotion. âDid you really mean what you told Pace just now?â
âYou meanâ¦that I love you?â
I nod.
âI meant every damn word, gorgeous.â He hesitates. Visibly swallows. âHannah was trying to describe love to me last semester. She said it feels like your heart is about to overflow, and that when you love someone, you need them more than anything else in the world, more than food or water or air. Thatâs how I feel about you. I need you. I canât stand the thought of being without you.â He releases a shaky breath. âYouâre the last person I think about before I go to sleep, and the first person I think about when I open my eyes in the morning. Youâre it for me, baby.â
The heartfelt words unleash a flood of warmth inside me, but despite that, I canât help but gaze at him with profound sorrow. âWhat about everything you said earlierâ¦about your future, and how youâre going to be miserable and hate your lifeâ¦â I bite my lower lip. âI donât want that to happen, Logan. I donât want you to turn bitter, and hateful, andâ¦â I trail off.
His fingers tremble against my cheek. âI wonât. Or at least, Iâll try not to. Itâs going to suck, Grace. We both know that, but I promise not to let it destroy me, or us.â A crack wobbles his voice. âAnd it wonât be forever, just until Jeff comes back and takes over again. The next few years, itâll probably feel like Iâm wandering around in a pitch-black tunnel, but there is a light at the end of it. And as long as youâre with me, thereâll be a light inside of it, too. Without you, itâll just be darkness.â
I burst out laughing, and a hurt expression fills his eyes.
âYou think thatâs funny?â he says sadly.
âNo, I was thinking itâs a damn shame you didnât put everything you just said into the poem you wrote me.â
A tentative smile lifts his mouth. âYou liked that, huh?â
âI loved it.â My heart constricts. âI love you.â
The smile widens. âEven after I acted like a stupid jackass today?â
âYep.â
âEven though Iâll probably act like a stupid jackass again? Because I canât promise not to. Apparently Iâm hopeless when it comes to relationships.â
âNo, youâre not.â I ease up on my tiptoes and kiss the corner of his jaw. âYouâre a bit inept, sure. But youâre also ridiculously talented when it comes to romantic gestures, so if you screw up again, Iâm ninety percent sure youâll be able to win me back.â
âOnly ninety percent?â He looks upset.
âWell, it depends how badly you screw up. I mean, if itâs picking a fight with me like you did today, then obviously weâll be able to work through it. But if Iâm over at your house and I go down to the basement and find a serial killer lair? No promises.â
âJesus Christ, what is your obsession with serial killers?â He grins. âHey, that should be your specialty. Profiling killers.â
Damn. Not a bad idea.
I decide to put a pin in that, then loop my arms around his neck again. âQuestion.â
His eyes twinkle. âHit me.â
âCan we kiss now, or are you still groveling?â
âDepends on whether my girlfriend requires more groveling.â
âNope. I require this.â I cup the back of his head and yank his mouth down on mine.
The kiss isâ¦magic. Itâs always magic when weâre together. As our tongues meet in a reckless tangle, my mind spins and my body sings.
âLove you, Johnny,â I murmur into his lips.
His laughter warms my face. Then he brushes his mouth over mine and whispers, âLove you too, gorgeous.â
