Stephen had been having nightmares. In his sleep, he found himself back in the room where Jeremy was executed. However, the person lying in the bed kept changing. Sometimes it was Snow or George, and other times he was Julius.
All Stephen could do was watch as each one of them died in front of him, and the one giving the execution order was him.
He saw their faces clearly in the last moments-full of regret, disappointment, and despair. He wanted to look away, but he could not. Once the drugs wore off, he woke up with his forehead glistening with sweat.
The ward was quiet. Slowly, he sat himself up. That was when he noticed someone beside him. He turned to look and was shocked by what he saw. It was Jeremy, dead and covered in blood and mud, crawling towards him.
Panicked, Stephen fell off the bed and crashed onto the floor. The sound startled Rachel awake, and she looked up to see Stephen on the floor.
"What happened?" She quickly went up to him, trying to help him.
"Don't come near me! Don't touch me!" Stephen screamed in horror.
Rachel froze, hurt and disappointed by his outburst. She had stayed here all night caring for him, and that was how he treated her? Still, they were married, and she was his wife.
"Let's get you up first." Rachel tried to help him up.
All of a sudden, Stephen slapped her in the face.
Rachel stood there, stunned. She could not believe what just happened. Tears filled her eyes. Why did she stay back to look after him?
Upon hearing the commotion, the nurses and doctors on duty quickly came over to check on them. Seeing Stephen agitated, they quickly seized him and gave him some sedatives.
Once Stephen calmed down, he realized he had slapped Rachel. However, how could it have been her?
"I'm sorry," he apologized.
His relationship with Rachel was already falling apart, and after the slap, things would snowball out of control if he did not apologize.
Rachel held her cheek and muttered, "It's fine. I'll go wash my face."
As soon as she stepped out of the ward, tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Ethan..."
She regretted choosing Stephen. Stephen had achieved nothing but failure. Moreover, he was abusive and had sent her father to jail, yet his apology did not sound sincere. He would not even look her in the eye.
Rachel asked the doctor for some cream for her cheek and then returned to the ward, but she kept her distance from him.
Stephen noticed the distance and wanted to say something, but nothing came out of his mouth.
The next morning, Nolan and Simon arrived.
As they stepped into the room, they saw Stephen on the bed and Rachel sleeping on the other with her face slightly swollen.
"What happened?" Simon asked.
Yesterday, Rachel was perfectly fine. Hence, he immediately asked the nurse about it and found out what happened last night.
Simon was infuriated by his son's reaction. He wanted to slap Stephen to wake him up, but when he saw how pale his face looked, he could not do it.
Watching from the window, Nolan took in the scene with growing uneasiness.
"So this is what happens when you mess with Ethan?"
No matter how much money or power one had, when it came to matters of life and death, or even love, wealth and influence suddenly felt useless.
A while later, a psychologist came. The psychologist was the best in Riveria and had treated several hundred patients. More than ninety of his patients had returned to normal life after multiple sessions.
Simon and Nolan told the psychologist about what happened to Stephen.
"Ethan Rivers?" The psychologist noticed the name. "Is this related to Ethan Rivers?"
