It seems like something out of a fantasy book, where mermaids exist and you can fly with just a sprinkle of pixie dust. Witches, magic, ghosts â hah. What else is possible? Even being able to talk to spiritual entities has it's explanations but this? I'm a wicken..
I didn't even know those existed â well I did â but I would have never imagined it to be real. Sure there are those people who run blogs about magic and the occasional lunatic that pops up on the television. But anyone would assume these people are delirious. âDo you want me to continue or have you had enough for today?â gramma Heather asks eyeing me cautiously. No. echoes in my mind but my lips betray me. âNo it's fine I need to knowâ I gulp and try not to think about the fact that this woman isn't who I thought she was. She's been hiding everything from me, from the beginning of my existence until now.
âFirst you should know Gemmy, your mother loved you so so muchâ
âYeah that's evident thanksâ I mumble under my breath and she takes my hand again focring me to look her in the eyes.
âIt's true Gemmy â she had no choice but to leave you in my care. She told me I would know what's best and I didâ she half smiles in the distance. âI knew I would be able to keep an eye on you if you were in the care of Melissa â your motherâ
âShe isn't my -â
âDon't ever say that Gem. Although Melissa did not carry you in her womb â she raised you and cared for you. Turning you into this gorgeous, intelligent young woman. She is and always will be your mother Gemmyâ she rants, disappointment clear in her retinas. I keep my mouth shut and allow her to continue.
âYour birth mother â Amara, she was forced to give you away and fleeâ she sighs gauging my reaction. I roll my eyes, typical melodrama. There is always a choice, she didn't have to abandon me â to have to live with feeling empty for most of my life.
âNo, don't roll your eyes listen.â Heather snaps, the more she does that thing where she knows everything â the more I believe this isn't some stupid story. Though I kinda wish it was.
âShe had to leave you because although we are in the 21st century â covens all over the world still hold on to their ancient rules. They were after you â the both of youâ she sighs, fear lacing her words. I sit up my palms sweaty and eager to hear the answer behind her fear.
âEventually they caught up with her but â that's why she left you with me, to ensure your survivalâ she sniffs, wiping away a stray tear. Was she so close to my birth mom? God I don't know what to believe. I do feel a sense of resolve now, yet I can't believe any of this is actually true.
âSo what? I was forgotten â to the rest of the witches or coven or whatever? And where is my birth dad?â I question, sounding a lot angrier than I had anticipated. It's because of this stupid coven that I was left with a void in my heart. I am grateful for the loving family that took me in and raised me but I wish I could have known. I just wish someone would have told me something instead of me finding out through my new experience with Niall.
âNo â sort of. It's not as crappy as it seems Gemmy. I put a protection spell over you â to conceal the magic within you. And as for your father well â they caught up with him long before they found your mother. He lead them away so she could bring you to me.â She explains and my mouth is so dry I actually start coughing.
âHereâ Heather reaches for an empty glass on the table and with a wave of her hand it's filled with water. My eyes go wide as she gives me a tight smile and helps me drink.
I finish off the water and we sit in silence.
How could two people I have never met before, mean so much to me already. I've only just learned of their existence and I want to curse who ever it is that took them from me. They loved me â so much that they died for me. Just like my mom and dad back home would.
There really is no difference between the two but it hurts all the same. âSay anything please Gemâ
âCan the spell ware off?â I gulp meeting her similar blue eyes.
âNoâ she watches me intently.
âSo because I am â what I am â I have the ability to see Niall?â
âYes. I used to think you only inherited traits from your birth father â since you never showed any signs of being able to do magic growing up. But this boy has brought it out in you â he's given you the piece of the puzzle Gemmyâ the corners of her mouth indecisively quirk up in a smile.
[Bobby]
âNow she knowsâ I say to myself as I look down at the only one who can save my son. The only girl who can make him see the value of his life.
âBobbyâ
âYes my lord?â I turn and bow I his presence.
âYou do know what will happen to you and her, if your son finally accepts his past?â He questions.
âYes. I knowâ I nod.
âOf course none of this will do any good if they do not know the consequences..â he hums and I realize what it is he's getting at.
âI will do everything in my power to make them see my lordâ I hastily promise.
âGoodâ

âHe's given you the piece of the puzzle Gemmyâ
The words swim around my mind. I would have never put it like that. I guess in a way he did. I wouldn't be here now having this talk with the person I thought was my grandmother â if it wasn't for Niall coming into my life.
The more I think about it the more sense his fathers words make. He's always said we needed each other well now I understand. Although I still fail to see how I can save Niall. I know why I can see him and why me â well sort of as to why me. Now I just need to understand how.
The night takes over the day and I watch from my grandmothers balcony as the lights in the city illuminate the streets. The polluted air welcomes me in a way I've never really experienced. I can't help think it has a lot to do with the pieces of my past. My birth parents.
âHow you holding up?â
I turn a little startled to face my â gramma. As I look her in the eyes I can see just how much she really cares and it isn't fair to treat as if she meant nothing to me. She was â she is my gramma. No matter what. Like my parents.
âOverwhelmed. But in a good way?â I laugh slightly lowering my stare. âOdd way to put it but I'll take itâ she joins me at my side on the balcony. I watch as she fidgets beside me, clearly having no idea if it's okay to reach out to me.
âYeah but don't worry gram, I feel a lot better being in the loopâ I nudge her and put her out of her misery. Her eyes gleam in the glow of the city lights, the tears present. I offer her a smile and she brings me in for a hug.
âGram?â I question as I break the embrace, âwhat is it?â she smiles wiping the corners of her eyes.
âSince you can see or I dunno sense thingsâ I hold my breath for a second. If she knows so much maybe..
âYou want to know how this whole revelation is going to help you with the boy?â she remarks before I can even put the right words together. âYeahâ I bite my lip in embarrassment.
âGive me your handâ she smiles warmly and I hold my hand out to her. She takes in in both her hands and closes her eyes, tilting her head back slightly. The breeze seeming to pick up just a little and with a deep breath her blue eyes find mine once again.
âI can't see exactly how things will work out but I do know that what ever it is that has to happen â needs to happen soon. Time is of the essence Gemmyâ she gives me a tight smile and for some reason my heart constricts. I know it is. I just wish Niall understood that.

I watched as the mood arose and faded on the horizon. Anxious for Gemmy to return. I haven't left this spot since she left yesterday. It's still really early but her family is up and running about already. I wonder what exactly is happening or has happened that she ran off so quickly. You mean beside the fact that she can see you?
âDay 2 ya knowâ my fathers sudden presence doesn't startle me, in fact I was expecting it. âYeah? How many are left before i'm too lateâ I retort, my heart jumping slightly. Im actually really fucking eager to find out just how much time I have left.
âYou'd have more than enough time if you would just accept that your worth more than you ever thought. That everything was-â
âI can'tâ I cut his rant short. My self hate broiling already.
âYou can't, or you won't? Cause there is a huge difference sonâ he sighs. Doesn't he know I know that? He doesn't understand how hard it is for me to live like this. Technically not living.
If only it were easy to just forget and change from one day to the next. I just can't.
No, you don't want to.
No.
Yes.
Maybe.
âNo. I just can'tâ I finally reply.
My father scoffs, and I finally look at him. A sarcastic and disappointing smile plastered on his face. âYou have grown so accustomed to this hell that you've made up for yourself, that it just seems easier to you. Your taking the easy way out.â
âYeh? Maybe I am. I'm a fucking coward haven't you got it yet? All those years watching over me and you still haven't gathered up the pieces?â I stand to my feet, glaring at the man who refuses to help me.
âNo! Because you aren't a coward Niall! You think you are but you aren't..â He sighs staring back at me with equal intensity. âI didn't raise a coward, you've made yourself believe you wereâ he lets down the hammer and I want to die all over again.
âYou didn't really raise me at all did youâ I bite back and he literally takes a step back to recover. âThat isn't fairâ he can barely breathe. âYeh it wasn'tâ I bite my tongue and he sighs heavily.
âNo. I â we had no control over what happened Niall. But no matter how bad things got you should have know I would never truly be gone, because I wasn'tâ He closes the space between us and places a hand on my shoulder.
âI was always here â always. I tried so hard to steer you in the right direction to make you see that you could overcome it all. Yet you kept seeing all the wrong signs until you made yourself miserable. So much so that you wanted nothing more than to become a distant memoryâ the tears welling up in my eyes blur his features slightly as I let his words sink in. He couldn't be more right about me.
âDo you know how hard it was to watch you do that? To sit and try to help you but never being able to get through to you? It was like dying a thousand times son.â His voice cracks and my eyes fall to the floor. Not able to hold his stare for throwing his absence in my life in his face.
âYou can help me nowâ I suggest and he laughs through the tears.
âNo Niall I can't. Only you can do that â cause if not then what lesson would you have learned?â my eyes dart back to his and my self loathing is back.
âI can't â I don't know howâ I admit shamefully.
âYes, you do. Just let it come to youâ he brings me in for a hug. She's the only one who gives me the will to fight..
âLet her inâ he whispers before he breaks the embrace and leaves me to think about my past. Can she really help me forget how shit my life has been? Sometimes I think she can and so much more but that means leaving the comfort of my sorrow. Who will I become? You'll be Niall. The real Niall.
