Chapter 13:
Zaire's POV
I didnât know how much longer I could keep this up. The longer I stayed in this game, the more it tore me apart. My world was falling apart, and every move I made felt like a step closer to losing everything I had built.
Zaâmiyah had no idea what she was really walking into. She was too innocent, too pure for this world of mine. She had been caught in the crossfire of my decisions, and now it was up to me to protect her, even if it meant sacrificing everything.
I couldnât keep her in the dark for much longer. She needed to understand the danger that surrounded her. And I wasnât sure how to tell her without losing her.
I leaned against the doorframe, watching as she moved around the apartment. She was trying to act normal, to pretend that everything was okay, but I could see the unease in her eyes. She knew something was wrong, even if she didnât understand the extent of it.
âZaâmiyah,â I said, my voice low, trying to catch her attention.
She turned to face me, a faint smile on her lips. âYeah?â
I hesitated, the words stuck in my throat. I wasnât sure if I was ready to tell her the truth. The truth that would change everything.
âSomethingâs coming,â I said, finally letting the words spill out. âPeople are after me. And theyâll come for you too if they get the chance.â
Her face softened with concern, but she didnât fully understand. She didnât know the depth of the danger, or the people I had crossed. But she would. I couldnât keep her in the dark forever.
âYou donât have to do this, Zaire,â she said, walking closer to me, her hand gently resting on my arm. âYou can walk away from all this. Youâve already built so much. You donât need to keep fighting.â
I shook my head. âYou donât understand. I canât walk away. Not now. Iâm too deep.â
She looked at me, her eyes full of hope. âYou still have a choice, Zaire. You always have a choice.â
I looked down, the weight of her words sinking in. Maybe she was right. Maybe I could walk away. But what would happen to the people who depended on me? What would happen to Malik, Giovanni, and Zoey? To everyone I had promised to protect?
I didnât have the answers. All I knew was that I couldnât lose her.

Malik's POV
The weight of the conversation still hung heavy on my mind as I walked through the quiet streets, my thoughts tangled in the chaos that was about to unfold. Zaire was stubborn, and I knew he wasnât going to back down easily. He thought he could protect Zaâmiyah, but he couldnât protect her from everything. The streets were unforgiving, and no one was truly safe.
I pulled my jacket tighter against the cold, glancing at the dimly lit buildings that surrounded me. This was where it all startedâthis life, these choices. But now, I wasnât so sure that it was worth it. The people we were up against werenât like us. They didnât care about loyalty or respect. They wanted power, and they would stop at nothing to get it.
As I reached Zaireâs apartment, I could see him through the window, standing by the door, looking out at the world beyond. The man was built for this life, but I could see the cracks in his armor. Zaâmiyah had changed him, and now he was at a crossroads. He could either double down and fight, or he could walk away and risk losing everything he had worked for.
I knocked softly, knowing that what I was about to say would only add to his burden.
âZaire,â I called softly through the door. âWe need to talk.â
He turned slowly, his eyes narrowing as he saw me standing there.
âMalik,â he said, his voice low. âYou know whatâs coming, donât you?â
I nodded. âYeah, I know. But you have to make a decision, man. You canât keep protecting her if youâre not willing to fight for your life. Itâs all or nothing.â
Zaireâs jaw clenched. He was torn. I could see it. I knew what he was thinkingâhe didnât want to drag Zaâmiyah into this, but the stakes were too high.
âYou have to decide now,â I added. âYou canât live in both worlds. Itâs too dangerous.â
He ran a hand through his hair, frustration written all over his face. âI canât lose her, Malik. I canât.â
I didnât have the words to comfort him. The reality of it was simple: if he didnât make a choice soon, it would be too late.

Ashleyâs POV
I sat next to Amire, watching him sleep fitfully on the couch. His fever hadnât broken, and I was starting to feel like I was losing him. Giovanni had promised heâd take care of everything, but I couldnât shake the feeling that something bigger was at play here.
It wasnât just about Amire anymore. It was about Giovanni, about the life he had chosen. I had always known he was involved in something dangerous, but I never fully understood the extent of it until now.
I picked up my phone and dialed his number, my hands shaking as the call rang out.
âGiovanni,â I said when he picked up. âYou need to come home. Amireâs getting worse.â
His voice was strained. âIâm on my way, Ash. Iâm coming. Just hang tight.â
I couldnât help the tears that started to well up in my eyes. âIâm scared, Gio. What if something happens? What if you donât make it back this time?â
There was a long pause on the other end. âIâll be back. I promise. Donât worry about me. Just take care of him.â
I hung up, the weight of his words pressing down on me. What was really going on? Why did he feel the need to protect us from the truth?
---
Giovanniâs POV
I didnât know how to explain it to Ashley. I couldnât. She had no idea how deep I was in this life, how far I had gone to protect her and Amire. And now, I was being pulled into something bigger than anything I could control.
As I walked into the apartment, I saw Ashley sitting with Amire, her face streaked with tears. The sight of her broke something inside of me.
âIâm here,â I said softly, kneeling beside her.
She looked at me, her eyes filled with fear. âWhatâs going on, Giovanni? Why are you acting like this?â
I didnât know how to answer. But one thing was clear: I couldnât protect her from this world forever.
I took a deep breath, looking at my son. This wasnât the life I wanted for him. I had to find a way out before it was too late.

Zoeyâs POV
I didnât know what was coming next, but I could feel the storm building. The tension in the air was palpable. Zaire was about to make a choice, and I wasnât sure if it would be the right one. But whatever happened, we were all going to have to live with it.
I sat by the window, staring out at the city. There were too many enemies, too many unknowns. And the deeper we went into this world, the harder it was to turn back.
As I watched the streets below, I couldnât shake the feeling that everything was about to change.
And none of us were ready for it.
