Chapter 49: Reminiscing
Viennese masks of the most intricate design were on display in the hotel lobby. They were bright
colors, decorated with glitter and feathers. Logan couldnât pull his eyes away. The masks were
absolutely gorgeous! âLook at how beautiful they are,â Logan muttered. Serena was standing beside
him. The moment heâd pointed out the masks, she had gone rigid. He didnât pretend to understand
what plagued her. The masks brought him back to the masquerade party heâd attended years ago.
Heâd been new to his role as Alpha. Getting so dressed up and wearing the mask had been a good way
for him to pretend he wasnât Alpha that night. âThey are beautiful,â Serena admitted, pulling him from
his thoughts. âHuman world art is incredibly unique and versatile.â âReally?â Logan asked, pulling his
eyes from the masks to look at Serena. She nodded. âArt from all cultures is just so different,â she said.
âAre you interested in art?â âIâd consider myself culturally curious,â he said. He looked back at the
masks. âWhy are masks so fascinating to you?â Serena asked him. Logan shrugged. âThere was a
masked party several years back for the pack graduates,â he explained. âIt was right after I became
Alpha, and I was excited to get to hide myself so no one would know who I was.â Serena giggled.
Logan caught the nervous hitch in the sound of her laughter. âWere you there?â he asked. âIf memory
serves, it would have been around the time you finished your undergraduate program.â He watched
Serenaâs eyes shift back and forth nervously. Between her secret phone calls to the human medical lab
and her discomfort about the party, Logan felt like he was closing in on the part of her past that she
was so desperate to conceal from him. âI was there,â she said. âIt was a fun night, lots of alcohol.â She
chuckled again. Logan smirked. âI remember the alcohol,â he said. âThe rest is a bit of a blur.â He
creased his brow, looking back at the masks. There was a look in Serenaâs face that he couldnât
decipher. It looked like a mixture of relief and also some kind of pain. âI donât think many in attendance
remember that night,â she said. âThere was one thing,â Logan said, eyes roaming over a mask that
reminded him slightly of the female heâd danced with.
âWhatâs that?â Serena asked. He glanced at her, and she was chewing nervously on her lower lip. :
Reminiscing âA woman,â he said. âI never saw her face, but she was fun. We danced, we ran through
the woods. Despite the alcohol, that was at least memorable.â Serena laughed. âIâm glad you had a
night worth remembering,â she said. She didnât speak to her own experience at the part and Logan
didnât pry. As much as he wanted to know about her secrets and her past, he knew that pushing her
would cause her to clam up. He was the same way. He knew heâd been cold to her since he found out
sheâd gone on a date with Carson. He was still too confused about what he was feeling towards it to
confront it. Logan knew heâd be silly to think Serena hadnât noticed his change in behavior towards her.
Fortunately, she hadnât asked. She hadnât bombarded him with questions or even called him out on the
behavior change. It was a pleasant change to what he was used to. Being in the city with the kids
again, he was reminded how much he adored them. Though, he wasnât completely naïve to Serenaâs
subtle comments about what it took to be a parent. That was another issue he had to confront. He was
putting it off until they returned to the pack.
âIâm going to get to bed,â Logan said. âIâm sure the kids have a big day planned for us tomorrow.â He
chuckled and headed to the elevator. âLogan,â Serena called out to him. Her heart thudded in her
chest. She had the overwhelming desire to tell him that it was her heâd spent the night with at the
masquerade party. âYea?â Logan asked, turning back to her. Serena sighed. âThe partyâ¦â she trailed
off. Telling him would raise too many questions. She still didnât have the DNA results back on whether
or not he was the twinsâ father, so she didnât want to say anything that would lead him to think he was
their father. âWhat about it?â he asked, raising an eyebrow. Serena smiled. âI had a really great time,
too,â she said. Logan smiled. It was all she could say without giving too much away. She didnât want to
act like the night was forgettable, because when the time came for her to tell him, she didnât want him
to feel insulted. When he had mentioned that the night was a blur, she had felt a small pang of rejection
at the idea that she was so forgettable. Heâd followed up with all the right things to let her know she
wasnât â even though he didnât know he was talking to her about herself â but she didnât want to set him
up for a similar feeling in the future.
âGood,â he said. She went to his side and rode up in the elevator with him. The silence between them
wasnât uncomfortable. She hoped that meant their ride home the day after next wouldnât be as awkward
as their ride into the city. Again, she wanted to ask him about his change in behavior, but she didnât
want to Reminiscing break the comfort between them. They were supposed to be going out to have a
nice day with the kids the next day, and if Logan was in a mood, she didnât want that to interfere with
their fun time. âSerena, you know you are more than capable of handing the kind of business deal
brokered today,â Logan said, pulling her from her thoughts. âI donât know, Logan, you said everything
right. I donât know the business that well,â she said with a shrug. Logan chuckled. âI think you
underestimate your strengths,â he said, angling himself towards her slightly. Serena looked at him and
then back at the elevator doors. âWhat do you mean?â she asked. âYou lived in the human world for
years, away from your pack and family. Youâve been a single mother to twins while also going through
medical school. Now youâre working as a doctor and still a single mother. Youâve had to put up with the
drama Iâve introduced into your life.â Logan sighed, shaking his head. Serena smiled at his praise. It
was more than she thought sheâd get from him, given the strange way heâd been behaving the past few
days. âThe strength, resilience, and skills youâve learned through all that, not to mention the emergency
medical situations youâve worked through, have prepared you for this kind of job,â he went on. âYou
wonât trust that until you have to stand on your own and do it.â
âIs that why you put me in charge of this renovation project?â she asked, turning and raising an
eyebrow at him. âOne of the reasons,â he admitted with a chuckle. Serena shook her head.
On the fourth floor, Logan went to his room and Serena went to her two-room suite where Dana was
asleep in one room and the twins were asleep in another. She went to where the twins were sleeping,
kissing each of them on the forehead. They squirmed in their sleep and then turned towards each other
to hug each other. Serena couldnât help but think about the things Logan had said to her. She got the
feeling that he remembered more than he was letting on about the party. She hoped that didnât mean
he suspected that it was her. Nothing heâd said would indicate that, but neither of them had spoken
about the party before. She wondered what it meant that they encountered the masks together in such
a unique set of circumstances, opening the door to talk about the party. Serena laid in bed with the
twins, thinking about the other compliments that Logan had given her. She was certain there was some
truth to it, that she just didnât trust herself yet. The medical field, in the human world, was primarily male
dominated, though, and she knew sheâd always encounter resistance. It seemed like Logan was telling
her not to give in because of resistance, but to push back until she got what she needed,
She wrapped her arms around the twins. She nuzzled her nose into Oliviaâs hair. The twins muttered in
their sleep. She liked having the chance to curl up with them. They were getting to the point where they
werenât coming into her bed when they woke up at night
Serena made a mental note to herself to push back the next time she was met with resistance. She
had to show her strengths, and Logan reminded her that they were there!
