Chapter 45: Logan Needs a Luna
Flo was waiting for Logan at his office. Logan groaned when he saw his mother sitting at his desk. He
turned the lights back out and tried to back away, but she flipped the light on that sat on his desk.
âLogan, we need to talk,â she said. âHave a seat.â
Logan felt like he was a child being scolded by his mother. Flo had the stern, motherly look. It was
more than that, though, she was also acting as Luna. The Lunaâs job was to be honest with the Alpha
and keep him in line. Normally, Alpha and Luna pairs were mated. Logan had gotten away with not
doing that because his mother had outlived his father. âNot now, please,â he said shaking his head.
âLogan, sit down,â Flo insisted, pointing to the chair across the desk from her. Logan sighed, moving to
the chair and plopping down heavily. He wasnât used to being on this side of the desk.
Flo had been in that office countless times when his father was alive. She had been much more hands
off since his father had passed. Logan knew he could count on her to be Luna when needed. She
looked like she belonged behind the desk, and Logan imagined that his father had sat in the same
chair he was sitting many times, confronted by Flo. âOkay, what is so important?â he asked. âI heard
about Holly,â Flo said. Logan scoffed, dropping his head back on his neck. âOf course, she is just so
eager to tell anyone that will listen,â he muttered. Flo sighed. âYou need to take this seriously,â she said.
âHolly is pregnant with your child. Youâve been Alpha for years no and havenât declared a mate or a
Luna.â
âYouâre Luna, remember?â he asked, looking up at her. Flo glared at her son harshly.
âI donât want to be anymore,â she admitted. âI was Luna to your father for years. I loved being by his
side, but it shouldnât be my responsibility now. You need to find a mate and make her Luna.â âIf youâre
suggesting I make Holly Luna⦠he trailed off. âYouâve been together a long time. She is carrying your
child. She comes from and Alpha bloodline. Is there a problem?â Flo asked. âI donât think she is my
mate,â Logan admitted. Flo sighed and shook her head. âIâm sorry to be so forward, Logan, but the time
has come to have a Luna, other than me,â she said, âIf you had found your mate, I would be overjoyed.
Unfortunately,
Alphas have to do what is right for the pack.â âI know, mom, I get it,â Logan said, crossing his arms and
pouting like a scolded child. Flo laughed
âHoney, I donât want you to give up on finding your mate,â she said. âBut the pack needs a Luna. What
if you never find her?â Logan shook his head. He didnât want to think about that âI thought I did,â he
admitted. âI thought I smelled her a while back, under the light of a full moon.â Flo looked thoughtful.
âDid you ever manage to track her down?â she asked. âNo,â Logan said moodily. âI donât know, it was
inconclusive.â âInconclusive how?â Flo asked, amusement dancing in her eyes. Logan sighed, sliding
further down in his chair. Discussing these things with his mother was not ideal. She wasnât there as his
mother though, she was there as Luna. âIn wolf form, i smelled someone soâ¦intoxicating, but I never
found her,â he said. âI couldnât tell if it was because it was a new smell that made it so delicious or
because she was my mate. I couldnât get it out of my head for days though.â âAnd you havenât smelled
it since?â Flo asked. Logan shrugged. He hadnât. At least, not that he was sure of. He had thought he
smelled traces of it on Serenaâs hair, but it was so soon after the initial encounter, heâd been smelling it
everywhere he went. Besides, sheâd never done anything to show she smelled something about him.
She was dating his Beta! âNo, I havenât. So, then there is the possibility Iâm just crazy and imagined it,â
he said. Flo shook her head.
âYouâre my son, you arenât crazy,â she assured. She stood up and walked around the desk, leaning
back on the desk for support but remaining in front of her son. âHolly is so convinced we are mates, but
Iâm not, so Iâve been stalling,â he admitted. âLike I donât know that,â his mother teased. âShe clearly
loves you. And I know you care about her, even love her. Why not make it official?â Logan snarled. He
stood up and walked away from his mother, standing in the corner of his office with his arms crossed.
âCanât you step down without me finding a new Luna?â he asked. âI get it, youâve been doing this a long
time. First with your mate, now with your son. Iâm sure you want a break.â âI want a break, I want to be
a grandmother, and I want to see you happy,â she said. âI want to see our family line continue.â âThatâs
a lot of pressure to put on me, mother,â Logan scoffed. âWhen you became mated to my father, you
also accepted a certain responsibility to the pack. Now you have to fulfill it until the time comes when it
isnât needed.â Flo sighed. Logan glanced back to see her looking at the floor, her shoulders having
sagged. She looked old suddenly. She wasnât the young, energetic Luna he had always seen her as.
His mother was aging, she was losing her strength. She needed a rest
âIâm sorry, mother,â he said, walking back to her and taking her hands. âThat was harsh of me.â
âLogan, I know you had to become Alpha young, and the loss of your father wasnât easy on either of
us,â she said. âYou had to begin your life as Alpha and take on so many responsibilities for a young
wolf. It wasnât fair.â âI did what I had to,â he said. âYes, and once again, as much as it pains me to say it,
you have to do what is needed again,â she said, putting her hand on his cheek. âYou canât wait around
for your mate forever.â Logan sighed heavily, shaking his head. âI donât know if Iâm ready to give up
yet,â he admitted. âI donât know if Iâm ready to be mated to someone forever.â âI get it,â Flo said. âYou
had to grow up fast. And time to be who you want to be and live your life your way is not a luxury that is
afforded to an Alpha.â âYouâre right,â he said, placing his hand over his motherâs. He gently pulled her
hand from his face. âIâll think about it.â Flo nodded and left him to his thoughts. Logan sat at his desk.
He leaned back, closing his eyes to digest his thoughts. Heâd been selfish, keeping his mother on as
Luna when she was ready to step down. In the beginning, it had made sense. He was so young heâd
needed an experienced hand to help him. Now, he knew what he was doing and he could carry on
without her.
Still, he wasnât ready to give up on finding his mate. Not when he was nearly convinced heâd smelled
her recently and he was determined to find her! Even if just to smell her again. He thought back to the
night. How close she had been to him! He shouldnât have just walked away, he should have tracked her
to the ends of the earth. Even his memory of her scent made him salivate.
There was no way he could accept Holly as his mate when he knew his real mate was still out there.
But Holly was pregnant with his child. It wasnât right to cast her aside now. He had a responsibility to
her and to their unborn child. There was a part of him that hoped it wasnât true. He was going to get her
medical records to confirm she was pregnant. Until then, he had no idea what he was supposed to do.
Being Alpha was pulling him none direction. The direction of the wellbeing of the pack. That was his
duty, one he had never faltered in since accepting the role so young. As much as he wanted to provide
for the pack, he thought that he was deserving of the change to find his mate. It was the one thing left
that wasnât dictated by him being Alpha. Heâd already given up so much to fulfill that, he really wanted
the chance at happiness with this one part of his life. He wanted one thing that really was his, not a
duty to his pack.
If he accepted Holly as his mate, that would be fulfilling his duty to the pack. If he looked for his own
mate, that would be for his own pleasure and happiness. He was being pulled in both directions, his
loyalty and devotion to the pack so strong, just as strong as his desire to find his true mate!
