âWell. Shit.â I blinked a few times then put on my sunglasses. âAt least the sun's shining.â
I really shouldn't have said that.
Because in that instant, it started pouring rain.
âYou were saying?â Alec snorted and pulled open the door to the beach house that we were going to be staying at for the next few months.
âI hate this place already. It smells,â I grumbled, popping my knuckles and stuffing my hands in my front pockets, only to fidget with the few pills I kept on me just in case.
You know, just in case I fell off a building.
Or got attacked by a shark.
Or felt⦠sad.
Scratch thatâjust in case I felt anything. Even happy.
âSo,â Alec licked his lips, âWe should probably get going.â
âUh?â I looked around. âWe just got here?â
âRight.â Alec didn't make eye contact. Instead, he coughed and opened the fridge. âI kind of signed us up for school.â
I froze. My heart damn near beat out of my chest. âHow do you kind of sign us up for school?
âDon't worry. I gave you easy classes.â
âAre you shitting me?â I roared.
âNo.â Alec's jaw flinched. He threw me a bottled water and took a swig of his own. âI'm not.
I shook my head. âYou're insane! We're going to get mauled!â
âNah,â I shrugged, âIt's Seaside. Check it, they still have a video store.â
âI'm sorry, I really don't know what that means.â I muttered.
âVHS,â Alec said slowly, âTapes.â
âLike as a joke?â I scrunched up my face. âWhy the hell would someone watchâoh God, are they Amish?â
âWho?â
âThe townsfolk!â I threw my water bottle onto the couch. âDo we have to grow beards and shit?â
Alec's stern face broke out into a smile. âYeah, and they deliver milk to our front door every day. But don't worry, if you run out we can just milk the goat out back.â
âWe have a goat,â I repeated. âIs it tame?â
âYeah.â Alec shrugged. âI named it Billy.â
My eyes narrowed. âDoes it live under a bridge?â
He smirked.
âWe donât really have a goat, do we?â
âNo, but it is Seaside, anything's possible.â
âNext you're going to tell me it's like Disneyland and this is where dreams come true.â I grunted and picked up my tossed water bottle and started playing with the paper so I wouldn't reach into my front pocket and take my second pill of the day.
If I was going to be going to rehab I needed to stop being so dependent if I had any dream of graduating the program and moving back to LA.
I wasn't that addicted anywaysâI could quit for a few months. It wasn't like I needed drugs to live or anything.
Yet my hands still shook.
And I still wanted that happy feeling.
The one that was so damn fake it made my chest acheâbecause at least then I wouldn't have to think about everything else going on.
âThey can't possibly be that naïve,â I grumbled. âWe're on every magazine in the country, not to mention we were trending on Twitter for an entire week. A week, dude.â
âButââAlec held his hand in the airââThey won't expect it. Besides, if things get crazy we hire security. Our fans aren't like Bieber's.â
My body shivered involuntarily. âScrappy little monsters.â
âOlder.â Alec shrugged. âWe have older fans, it won't get that crazy.â
âFamous last words,â I grumbled. âLet me go change out of my pants then, seems we have a super fun day of going to actual school to look forward to.â
âThat's the spirit.â
I nodded, forced a smile, and did what I always did when my brother pissed me off. I grabbed the little white pill and chewed the bitter piecesâmy tongue was already going numb.
In a few minutes the rest of my body would follow.
As I ran up the stairs and changed out of my jeans, I caught a glance of myself in the mirror.
Dark circles were under my glassy eyes. I looked like hell.
Well, great, going to high school sure seemed like hell. I'd fit in just fine.
âHurry up!â Alec shouted from downstairs.
âOn it.â I grumbled and put on a pair of pants that wouldn't get me arrested.
****
The drive to school was way too short.
âDo we really have to do this?â I watched in horror as kids, normal kids, piled into the large rundown building. Some had backpacks, others carried books.
âHmm.â Alec turned off the Mercedesâ âYou'd think after taking a pill this morning you'd be in a happy mood.â
Caught. Damn it. âAlec, look, it was only oneââ
âHonestly, man. I don't wanna hear it. I really don't.â
He got out of the car and slammed the door behind him, leaving me blanketed in the silence of my own guilt.
With a curse, I got out of the car and followed him through the parking lot.
Nobody stared.
Seriously?
Huh, who would have thought?
We walked through the doors and went straight for the office where one teacher promptly fell into a chair and started fanning herself, the secretary swallowed her gum.
And the principal beamed. âSo you made it.â
âYeah.â Alec nodded. âWe did.â
âYour schedules.â He handed a folder to each of us. âAnd you let me know if there are any issues. I'm still convinced you won't be able to pull it off, but good luck.â
âThanks.â Alec smiled warmly and nudged me back towards the door.
The lady who fainted in her chair reached out and grabbed my shirt.
âMrs. Smith!â the principal scolded, âHe's under eighteen.â
âOh.â She blushed.
âAww, teacher wants to play with the student?â I smirked and blew her a kiss. She continued fanning. And Alec pulled me by the shirt out of the office.
