âHow do you know when you're ready?â Demetri asked as we drove to the restaurant for the rehearsal dinner.
âIt's like this,â Jaymeson interjected. âWhen she goes, âbaby I love you, I want you so much, I need yoâuâ that's when you seal the deal.â He gave a smug grin and nodded.
âYeah.â I licked my lips. âPretty sure what Demetri was asking had nothing to do with one of your one-night stands.â
Demetri was staring at Jaymeson like he was some sort of alien from Star Trek. âSeriously, how are we related?â
Jaymeson shrugged. âHey, I was only trying to help.â
âYou talking about marriage?â I asked as I took a side street to downtown Seaside.
âNo, I'm talking about puberty.â Demetri rolled his eyes as Jaymeson cackled behind us. âYes, I'm talking about marriage.â He shifted in his seat and started fiddling with his hands.
âWhat did you do?â I asked. âYou're fidgety.â
âHe's high.â
âI'm not high!â Demetri yelled. âBut I did do something on impulseââ
Jaymeson waved him off. âHappens to everyone. No worries. One time Iââ
ââI bought a ring!â Demetri blurted.
I slammed on the brakes, causing the front of Jaymeson's head to smash into the back of Demetri. Both of them cursed blue streaks for a good ten seconds.
âSorry,â I mumbled. âYou did what?â
âRing.â Demetri rubbed the back of his head.
âRing,â Jaymeson said slowly. âYou mean like a wrestling ring? Or something you do when you're phoning someone?â
âRing.â Demetri scowled. âAs in, I went and dropped six figures on a five-carat piece of work from Tiffany's.â
I slammed on the brakes again. âAre you trying to outdo me? Tiffany's? SIX figures?â
âTiffany's has badass rings.â This from Jaymeson.
The car fell silent. I finally spoke up. âAnd the slut in the backseat knows this how?â
Jaymeson looked away and whistled.
âJaymeson?â Demetri urged.
âOh look! The restaurant!â Jaymeson pointed. âPull over! I gotta piss.â
âHe knows things,â Demetri mumbled. âHe only acts weird when he knows thingsâ¦â
âThe girls?â I guessed.
âThey've been talking.â Demetri's eyes narrowed as Jaymeson disappeared into the restaurant.
âAnd he's been listening.â
âLoyalty.â Demetri nodded. âThey have his loyalty.â
âDamn.â
