Robin removed the gift she purchased for her boyfriend from her trunk, and walked quickly toward his apartment complex. She'd just finished preparing it, adding his favorite chocolates, body scent, and even buying him a new fitted cap, since she knew he loved them.

The couple had been together since their freshmen year when they met during the pair's media day. The basketball team for UConn was just wrapping up when the volleyball team entered, causing the pair to run into each other. He'd asked her for her social media and they went on from there.

Now in their last year of college and going on their fourth year together, they seemed to be thriving. Robin truly loved him. Although he could be distant, she knew how it was being an athlete, there was so much pressure for success and to make it to the higher level, so she never held his dismissive actions against him.

She walked into the elevator, immediately pressing his floor. Robin always did things like this. One of her love languages was gift giving. Anything he wanted, she got it. She loved spoiling the people that she cared about.

Energy began to boost from her as she neared his apartment. She'd just known that he would love her gift. She lifted her hand to knock and waited patiently for him to answer the door. She'd heard some shuffling from behind and it opened suddenly.

However, instead of seeing the 6'3, chocolate man that she'd fallen for, her eyes had met the ones of Celeste Deem, the captain of the cheerleading squad. Robin double checked the apartment number, making sure she was at the right place. And indeed she was.

No one lived with Miles. His NIL paid for him to live in a beautiful bachelor pad just outside campus, so he was not burdened with living with a roommate. But there had to be an explanation. Why was Celeste there?

"Oh, Robin," she said with a nasty smirk, peaking through the door, "I'm so sorry."

Robin's eyebrows furrowed, her brown skin beginning to grow hot with rage. Her heart began to beat in an inhumane way, chest feeling as if it was about to cave in. Never did she ever think that her boyfriend would cheat on her. This couldn't be true. She'd done everything right, she thought?

Robin was a dedicated girlfriend. Although she was an athlete herself, she still chose to go to almost all of Miles' games for him. When he had away games, she'd create sweet traveling packages with handmade notes and snacks that he loved. She planned special dates for the pair together and even removed most of her male following because it made him feel some type of way.

For three years, Robin allowed this man to consume her entire life. To become someone who meant so much to her and that she'd do almost anything for. After all, she'd thought he loved her. At least that's what he told her.

"Where is he?" She said through gritted teeth. She pushed the door open, looking around the disheveled apartment. She'd heard the shower running. She threw the items that she'd bought him on the bed before bursting into his bathroom, catching him by surprise. There he was in all of his glory.

Miles was not an unattractive man. He was the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome. His skin was so beautiful and smooth, which was the quality that Robin loved the most besides his smile. He was fit from all the workouts his coach made them do during off season, making it seem, like he was crafted by God himself.

But, Robin couldn't even think about that. All she saw was a lying, manipulating, good for nothing, piece of shit.

"You trying to hop in with me, Celly," he shouted before turning around and seeing his fuming girlfriend, "oh shit, baby? It's not what it looks like!"

"Nigga, please! Save that shit for a bitch that will actually sit down and listen. Delete my fuckin' number, you piece of shit. You wasted my god damn time! How the fuck could you?"

Robin yelled at the man as he tried to come out of the shower and calm her down. Her southern drawl coming out as she yelled and cussed in his face. No matter how good he looked, she would not fall for his apologies and useless lies. He'd cheated on her. She'd given him everything, including her body, and he cheated. She was disgusted.

"Robin, baby, listen, it meant nothing!" He said, quickly wrapping a towel around his waist and reaching out to her, "I'm so sorry."

Tears angrily streamed down her face as she pushed them away, "Fuck you. Lose my fucking number."

And with that she walked out, not forgetting the shit that she purchased from him. She pushed past Celeste, not even giving her another glance. Obviously the cheerleader knew nothing about common decency or girl code. She, and the whole entire campus, knew that the athletes were together, so she had no excuse.

Robin was livid.

She was embarrassed.

She was heartbroken.

Once she got into her car, she immediately took the post down. Then almost immediately called her mother, Sandra.

Despite their distance from Connecticut to Alabama, Sandra was always present in Robin's life. No matter what, she'd always answered the phone. She made sure that Robin grew up in a loving household and that everything she ever wished for came true. Being a single mother was extremely hard, but Sandra made it look like a breeze. Her daughter was her biggest accomplishment.

So, when her daughter called her crying, she made sure to answer.

"Mommy, he cheated on me." Robin sobbed into the phone, her head resting on her steering wheel. Heart still beating like crazy, "I don't understand why this keeps happening to me."

Sandra listened as her daughter poured out her heart. She wanted to catch the next flight to Connecticut right away and be there to love and nurture her baby girl. But, she couldn't. All she could offer was her soothing words and motherly comfort.

The women talked on the phone for hours. The call was filled with words of affirmation, reminding Robin of what a beautiful, worthwhile woman she was. She deserved the world, not scraps.

"Thank you for talking with me, Mommy," she sniffled, rubbing her already puffy eyes, "I can't wait to see you in a few weeks."

"You're welcome, Button." Sandra said, drying her eyes as well, "Remember what I said, Robin Marie. You deserve all the flowers, all the love, all the kisses, the entire universe. Don't allow that young man to steal your light. Mommy loves you, okay? I will see you in three weeks."

As she listened to her mother more tears came out, and she nodded, even though her mother couldn't see her. She responded, telling her mother thank you and that she loved her back before ending the call.

After hanging up, Sandra immediately sent a message to Harper, Robin's best friend and roommate, giving her heads up about her daughter's sadness, but not sharing the details. She wanted to make sure she could get some comfort and a distraction in person.

ONE HOUR LATER

The girls were cuddled up on the couch, watching reruns of the Vampire Diaries and eating ice cream. Harper had allowed Robin to lay across her lap, as she stroked her best friend's hair and listened as she poured her out.

"I believe the reason why I'm really upset is because he chose her, out of all people. A woman who looked nothing like me, who is literally the exact opposite of me. I'm not trying to be insecure, but look at Celly."

Celeste was a fair skinned girl who was thin. She came from a two parent household. She drove a Mercedes-Benz and her parents were big time doctors in New York City. Although Robin was grateful for her life, she couldn't help but think that Miles needed more than her.

Someone who was lighter. Someone who had different hair than her. Someone who comes from a stable home. Someone the complete opposite of her. And that's what broke her.

"Wait a second, Button," Harper said sternly, "what I will not allow you to do is degrade yourself or think that you're anything less than an amazing, beautiful, and blessed young woman. Celeste could have everything in the world, but you have things that money cannot buy. That is grace, kindness, empathy, compassion and the list goes on. Do not let this ruin you. Don't talk about my best friend that way."

More tears streamed down her face as she listened to the kind words of her friend. She was right. After all, Robin was indeed a great young woman. She had her own nonprofit organization, for Christ sakes. It was dedicated to young girls who grew up in one parent households, so that they could have access to sports and extracurriculars. She was extremely involved in her community back home, constantly giving back to her small town.

She was indeed an amazing person.

"Now, we are not couch rotting anymore today." Harper said, making her sit up from their position on the couch. "It's the season opener today, meaning that the big kickoff party is tonight. We are about to dress up sexy as hell and go out. Fuck Miles. Fuck Celeste. Tonight is all about you. Sulking is not going to make you feel better. Let's make this man eat dirt for hurting you."

Robin smiled a little before engulfing her friend into a hug. While she wanted to stay home all night, she knew that Harper was right. They needed to turn up.

After all, she was now a newly single woman and they'd just bought a new bottle of Hennessy.
