A rift tore open in the bunker, and Priam smiled as he caught Sphinx in his arms.
âPRIAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!â she squealed, her voice filled with excitement.
Just as expected, the child was unharmed. A weight lifted from Priam's heart.
"Welcome home, Sphinx," he said, gently stroking her head.
"You came for me!"
"Did you ever doubt it?"
"Not for a second!"
Priamâs smile stiffened as an oddly striking woman stepped through the rift. Humanoid in form, her features were unmistakably alien, with rose gold eyes scanning the bunker, alive with curiosity.

[Ãve ? - Tier 0 - Baroness] - Memory of the Fae.
Sheâs the greatest rival, and absolutely didnât write this herself!
Behind her, a clone carried the gifts of Sumstreh, while further back, the Fallen glared at Priam with murderous intent.
âItâs not over,â the Fallen growled.
âOf course not. Weâll settle this in five months.â
Hearing the authority in Priamâs voice, Sphinx closed the rift with a flick of her hand.
âAre we really gonna wait five months to kill him?â the child asked.
âIf Arnold doesnât get to him first,â Priam joked. His quest was active again, but he couldnât secure a second Token and another promise of bloodline purification. However, Priam wasnât about to let the ultimate prize slip into his rivalâs hands. He gave himself until the second Reunion to deliver the fatal blow to Sumstreh.
âBastard will know about Arnold being a trap,â warned Kazuki.
âOf course. But itâs a bait too tempting to ignore,â Ãve chimed in with a grin.
"That's what I'm counting on. Youâre looking well, Ãve."
âI canât complainââ
âCode Total RecallâÃve!â
Priamâs heart lurched. Jasmine looked panicked, and her sub-system was desynchronized from his. Was Ãve trying to tamper with his memory? It was ridiculousâthey had been friends since their arrival in Elysium. Yet, the possibility was too serious to ignore.
His mist-cloak solidified into an icy shackle around Ãveâs wrist as his add-on scanned for inconsistencies. The faeâs eyes gleamed and..
âARGH!â A womanâs scream cut through the air.
Priam blinked as his memory synced back with Jasmineâs. He had lost the last five seconds in a haze. A droplet of blood hit the floor, pulling his attention to the right. Suspended a meter off the ground, impaled by Kazukiâs spear, Ãve coughed up blood.
The hopliteâs pupils had transformed into miniature spears. Guided by instinct, he was impervious to the fae's manipulations. As his add-on copied the hidden memory from Jasmineâs sub-system, Priam remembered everything. Ãve was far from being his friend. Ɽ
âIt hurts,â Ãve muttered, her golden eyes flaring. A sphere of light erupted from her, violently blasting Kazuki away. Freed from the spear, Ãve fell to the ground, her ghastly wound closing as if it were nothing but a bad memory.
The bitch! Priam seethed, recognizing the mythical shield he had entrusted to the clone in case Sumstreh tried using Sphinx as leverage.
His hand clenched around Promesse, the weapon humming in sync with his anger. The frosty air that escaped his mouth, though giving him a feral appearance, was mundane. The ambient heat had been absorbed by his skill, cooling the air enough for his breath to condense naturally.
Priam stood ready to strike Ãve the moment her shield faltered.
âI surrender,â she announced, her protective bubble vanishing. In an instant, the tip of Kazukiâs spear was at her throat. Ãve, completely unphased, stuck her tongue out. Sheâs mad.
He clenched his teeth as he saw the hoplite halt his attack. Kazukiâs instincts had decided the Fae wasnât a threat anymore. Itâll be up to me to finish this.
A small but firm paw landed on his hand, stopping him as he raised Promesse. Sphinx didnât want him to strike.
âWhy?â Priam asked, baffled.
âSheâs dumb... but sheâs my friend.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Surprise was quickly overtaken by a storm of rage. Priam looked up, glaring at Ãve, who smiled.
âI swear on my Potential that I didnât alter her memories or force Sphinx to say those words,â Ãve said. âIâm not stupid enough to rack up bad karma with a sphinx.â
The absence of coercion calmed Priam, but confusion flooded back.
âWhy defend her?â he asked Sphinx, ignoring the Fae. âSheâs the reason you were locked up!â
And that I nearly became a mindless slave. Priam kept those words to himself; they felt hollow. Without realizing it, he had purged some of his hatred for the clone after defeating her. His competitive nature struggled to maintain hatred for those he had bested; the emotion quickly lost its intensity.
âIt wasnât her fault,â Sphinx murmured. âIt was the cloneâs.â
Priamâs gaze shifted to the clone, who had set down Sumstrehâs gifts in a corner and now seemed uncertain about what to do next.
"...What do you mean?"
âI could explain,â Ãve offered with a smirk. âBut could you lower that pointy stick first?â
âNo.â
Until he was sure that Sphinx wasnât affected by Stockholm syndrome, Priam would remain on guard. The fae studied him for a few moments before turning to Sphinx, who merely shrugged.
âI told you messing with people's memories was rude.â
âI forgotâ¦â Ãve sighed, then addressed Priam like she was speaking to a child. âYou seem to have a partial understanding of how my clones work. I read an unknown individualâs experiences and then synchronize our memories; I have no control over them and donât always agree with their actions.â
âYet you share the same goal.â
âExperiences shape a person. Their personality gets drowned and reforged by millennia of memories. My Task becomes theirs, but their nature means we can have differing opinions on how to achieve it.â
The revelation took Priamâs breath away. If Ãve was telling the truth, he was in mortal dangerâ[He Who Eludes Death] wouldnât help him restore his ego if it was shattered. His add-on could manipulate his memory, but against an expert like Ãve, that didnât mean much.
Facing a fate worse than death, his hearts raced, and he considered drastic measures. Should he trigger a nuke to eliminate the enemy? That would condemn Kazuki and Sphinx, but he could resurrect them later.
âYou fear for your ego, not your life,â Ãve observed, narrowing her eyes. âI sense youâre about to do something stupid if I donât calm you down.â She raised her hands. âI swear on my Potential I wonât touch your memory or your friendsâ memories for the rest of the dayâunless you invite me to.â
Her clone echoed the oath, and Priam exhaled, finally breathing again.
âBetter?â Ãve grinned.
Priam found himself wanting to wipe the smile off her face. The cloneâs pragmatism grated on him less than the madness of the original. He made an effort to control himself.

âMemory manipulationâs a sickening crime,â Kazuki stated, regaining control of his instincts. âIf you mess with my memory again, youâll die.â
âYouâre all so violent⦠Iâm not your enemy.â
âYou attacked us,â Priam growled.
âI just tweaked your memories so we could be friends. You attacked me!â Ãve huffed, chewing on her nails in mock outrage.
Priamâs fists clenched. Her ridiculous antics grated on his nerves. âAre you kidding me?â
âNot at all! Thatâs how fae make friends.â
Priam groaned. The cultural divide was so vast, he didnât even try to bridge it.
âShe didnât mean any harm,â Sphinx pleaded. The two seemed to have bonded during their weeks of captivity.
âMaybe, but I hate when people mess with my mind... and steal my stuff. That mythical shield wasnât yours.â
âIâm not a thief.â Ãve tossed something to Priam. He caught it mid-air and was surprised to find a golden cube. âThat wasnât the real shield. I just manifested your memory of it.â
Her esoteric abilities were unsettling, but there was worse.
âYou saw my memories from the erased timeline.â Priamâs jaw tightened. If she talks to Arnold...
âYup, piece of cake. Your memories are strangely clear compared to most.â
Priamâs frown deepened. Against someone like Ãve, [Ultimate Sensory Memory] was a security flaw. I need to lock down my memories...
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
[Added to agenda.]
A heavy silence fell until Sphinxâs stomach growled.
â...Is it snack time?â she asked.
âMore like breakfast,â Priam mused, patting her head.
âCan we invite Ãve to eat with us?â
âIâd love to, but the First doesnât like me,â Ãve pointed out.
âWhy?â Sphinxâs eyes widened in surprise.
Priam hesitated. He had hated the clone so much that some of his animosity spilled over to the original. Moreover, the faeâs flippant attitude only reinforced his dislike.
âI donât trust people who mess with my memories, and her insolence irritates me.â
âFor a fae, Iâm actually pretty well-behaved,â Ãve quipped.
Priam ignored her, turning instead to Sphinx. âWhy do you like her?â
âShe helped me hide from Sumstreh many times. Without herâ¦â The girl shivered, and Priam pulled her close.
âI see. What about the clone?â
âShe can die,â Sphinx and Ãve said in unison.
Priam blinked, surprised. Ãve just shrugged. âIf the death of a clone can appease one of my rivals, itâs worth it. Besides, Iâm not very happy with what she did to Sphinx.â
âShe was trying to save you.â
âIt mightâve been good for theTask, but I still donât like it.â
âA bit hypocritical coming from her creator,â Kazuki pointed out. âYouâre partly responsible for her actions.â
âIâm often hypocritical,â Ãve smiled, giving a thumbs up. The hoplite didnât return her smile.
âYouâve got nothing to say while weâre talking about your death?â Priam asked the clone, who was busy inspecting her nails.
âIf my death helps the Task move forward, Iâm fine with it. Iâm one of the weaker clones anyway. Not that important.â
Her detachment finally got on Priamâs nerves. Of all people, he knew how terrifying death could be.
âIâve changed my mind,â he said after a few seconds of thought.
The young Aelbes stumbled into her tent, barely making it to her bed. By the time she woke up, the clone would be gone. Only a confused tribeswoman would remain, her mind free from the alterations Ãve had made. Priam considered severing their spiritual connection but decided to hold off. Sphinx trusted the faeâs word, but he didnât.
âWill she get her ego back?â
âMostly,â Ãve yawned. âI erased the memories of the past few weeks, but experiences leave scars on both the soul and the mind.â
âCanât you fix that?â
âIâve always been pretty bad at mind magic.â
Priam had a thought for the clone who had forced his meeting with Sumstreh. Because of her, he had almost become a slave to the Fallen, and Sphinx had been imprisoned for weeks. He still remembered the terrible anger and the vow of revenge he had made.
Today, the clone was deadâone less name on his kill list. If her body wasn't rotting at the bottom of a pit, her ego had been erased. Better yet, an innocent person had regained her life and freedom. This was a principle dear to Priam, and for this reason, he was happy with the outcome.
A golden gaze scrutinized him, reminding Priam that the hardest part was yet to come. Your turn, Eve.
Silence settled. As the three rivals observed each other, tension rose. Sphinx squirmed in Priamâs arms, sensing the unease.
âMay I kill her?â Jasmine asked casually.
Priam hesitated. Ãve was partially responsible for her clones' actions, and her magic was monstrous. The real question wasnât whether she deserved death but if she was a threat to Oasis and its people. And if she was, could they even take her down?
âYouâve got other clones, right?â he asked bluntly.
âPlenty!â
âWhere are they?â Kazuki asked. None of the others had tried to help the original escape.
âTheyâve reached other tribes,â Ãve revealed, âbut the strongest ones headed towards Knaya.â
âWithout you?â
âIâm not essential to the Task.â
She was willing to die for her cause, Priam mused. That was worrisome because fanatics were always dangerous.
âWhy Knaya?â Kazuki pressed.
The fae grinned, flashing sharp canines. âNot everyone can just hack their way through monsters to level up their skills. Besides, I miss civilization.â
âThe road to the Empire is long and deadly,â Kazuki pointed out.
âWith Tyr and Kala, itâs a walk in the park.â Ãve smirked at the puzzled looks from her rivals. âThe Judge and the Beast.â
âThe two missing rivals...â
âThat explains why we havenât detected any movement from them,â Kazuki said. âHowever, it doesnât tell us what to do with you.â
Ãve gave a playful bow. âIâll help you decide: Iâm leaving soon. Someoneâs remembering me.â
Her figure began to blur around the edges.
The shadow at her feet trembled, but Priam held off giving the execution order. If Ãve could sift through his memory for a mythical shield, she had surely found much worse. He wouldnât trade his friendsâ lives for a rival on the run.
âIâll bring you a gift next time. A little thank-you for saving me.â
âNo need,â Priam replied coldly. âBest gift you could give is making sure thereâs no next time.â
Ãve burst into laughter. âYouâre as mean as a fae!â
The fae's silhouette lost its colors.
âBy the way, you never told us what your Task is.â
The fae smiled. âYou wanna know?â
Priam saw the ambient aether freeze. Depending on his response, something would happen. Something horrible.
âNo.â
âToo bad.â
Ãve dissolved like a dream at dawn, her eyes vanishing last, taking her madness with them. All that remained was a golden fingernail.
âThis is amazing! More!â
Blueberry refilled Sphinxâs bowl, and she immediately started scarfing down the food. Her head practically disappeared into the sauce, forcing her to hold her breath.
Not to be outdone, a baby wyrm chirped and leapt into the stew pot.
Sphinx was winning the raceâshe had already eaten the equivalent of two deerâbut Moonie wasnât far behind. Priam had no idea how their bodies stored all that food.
âLost in thought, son?â
Priam glanced up to see his father holding a plate of vegetarian food.
âI was wondering when my father changed his diet,â he joked.
âYmir says itâs good for digestion, so Iâm giving it a shot. But donât change the subject. Whatâs bothering you?â
âNot much,â Priam shrugged. âSphinx is back, and I kept my promiseâÃveâs clone is gone. Iâd be perfectly happy if I hadnât let a fae loose.â
âA fae?â
âA weird creature.â
âMalicious?â
âThatâs what Iâd like to know,â Priam sighed, staring at his hand.

The nail was magical and would save Priam a lot of Potential points. Eve was a calamity for those she manipulated, but she had been careful not to antagonize him.
âYouâre overthinking this,â Kazuki said, sitting beside him. âÃve would have found another way out with or without you. In some ways, sheâs scarier than Arnold.â
âStill, I wish I hadâ¦â Priam paused.
âKilled her?â Kazuki finished.
âI don't know. Maybe. She deserves it, right?â
âShe chall diih!â Jasmine grumbled through a mouthful of food.
âThe cloneâs family would say yes, and Sphinx would say no,â Kazuki replied. âI think we have better things to do than deal with her.â
Priamâs eyes widened. âShit, Iâm sorry! Iâve been wasting time thinking about Ãve while youâre about to face your Tribulations. How are you feeling?â
âPretty good. The intel you shared through the mental bridge was⦠enlightening.â
Kazukiâs gaze became distant, and Priam realized his friend had more pressing concerns than a far-off rival. He needed support.
Priam downed his bowl in seconds and got up. âHow about some sparring before your Tribulations?â he asked, extending a hand to his rival. âIf you really try, you might even scratch me.â
The taunt made Kazuki smile. The hoplite accepted Priamâs hand and grabbed his new spear. âI hope youâve improved in the last twenty-four hours.â
âI held my own against a Tier 4,â Priam boasted.
âBy cheating.â
âStill counts.â
The two rivals grinned. Their enemies were far away, and for now, they had time to grow.
