Chapter 43: 𝑋𝐿𝐼

A Shriveling FlowerWords: 8270

A chill ran through Jason's body as his body shaked in coldness. His puffy eyelids opened to reveal his bloodshot eyes after yesterday's crying.

Jason stared up at the ceiling in a daze as his body screamed at him from the awkward position he was sleeping in, on the cold floor. He tilted his head slowly to the right and looked at the teddy bear that he was still holding since last night.

"Lily" Jason called out, his voice cracked as it was the first word he said since Lily's funeral.

"LILY!" Jason screamed louder, his voice echoed throughout the house and his shouts were answered by silence.

He so badly wanted this to be a dream. He was waiting for Lily to answer him, he focused his eyesight on the door waiting for her to walk in and comfort him.

Jason's eyes welled up with tears and the grief coursed through his veins in a form of anger. His fist tightened around the teddy bear's neck and he flung him across the room knocking down some of the stuff that was on the shelf.

Jason pulled on his hair as his breath quickened and the world around started spinning. He couldn't take it anymore, he felt suffocated in this room, so without thinking it through he stood up and went directly down to the basement.

Jason appeared out of the basement, a few minutes after rumbling down there, with a red gallon in his hand. His future with his wife and daughter went down in flames, the canin went down in flames, and now it's their home turn to burn.

Maybe he should go down with it...

Walking around the house, Jason threw gasoline all over the place and finally reached Hope's bedroom. He placed all the contents of the box that was from Lily back inside it, except for the letter.

He placed it in his jacket where he placed the photo yesterday and held the teddy bear in his hand before spraying the whole room with gasoline.

Jason took his time to look around Hope's room and his and Lily's room saying goodbye to all the memories they had together, before heading to the kitchen and grabbing a match box.

He lit it up and watched the spark of flame burning the match, the match burnt out and died, but Jason didn't throw it.

It was harder to burn their home with all the love and memories they've had in it, burning the cabin was easier for some reason, or maybe it was just the adrenaline from the pain and anger that was coursing through him.

Jason repeated this action for a few times before he finally gained the courage and threw the match away from him onto the wooden floor. He watched the fast flames if fire swallow the entire house, but he didn't move from his place.

The fire was spreading quickly and was getting dangerously closer to him, but Jason stood still and just watched. The smoke was getting thicker and it was becoming harder to breathe by each second.

As Jason's lungs got filled with it, he started coughing and slowly collapsed onto his knees. He welcomed the feeling of pain, he rather feel physical pain over the emotional one that was piercing his heart.

Jason slowly started to lose his consciousness, but the only thing that was going on through his mind was Lily. He wished he would have hugged her longer, if he cuddled her on that couch for a little bit more, if he spent more time with her even while cooking and cleaning.

That smile of hers haunted him in his sleep and in his consciousness and unconsciousness. Her laugh still echoed in his ears and mind, he would give anything and everything to feel her touch one more time.

He would do anything to hear the words 'I love you' coming out of her soft lips.

As Jason slowly gave up to the darkness the sounds of screaming, shouting , and banging were heard in the background. The last thing he saw before he fainted was the figure of someone running towards him.

He wanted to scream and shout out at them to leave him alone so that his misery ends, but his body failed him and gave up as he was getting dragged out of there.

Jason's mother sat down on the hospital bed next to her son. She hated the smell of hospitals and the beeping sounds of the machines, it gave her a bad feeling, but for the past week she seems to be here daily.

Her tears dried up on her cheeks as she cried over her son. She cried over his broken heart and the place he reached, he almost killed himself for the love of god.

"Oh my dear child, what happened to you, my baby? I'm sorry I couldn't protect you better, it's not fair that you had to go through this at this young age. Forgive me for not protecting you better, honey" Jason's mother cried out as she caressed her son's hair.

Two sets of arms wrapped around her in support as she looked back at her husband who was pained as much as her.

"It's not your fault, love. We tried our best to protect him, but he made his choice and that's his fate. We cannot change anything, it's something that was destined to be. So don't blame yourself, love. He will be okay, he's one of the King's afterall, he's strong and tough and he'll get out of this stronger. Just give him some time." Her husband tried to console her.

"I hope so.." Jason's mother replied simply.

Their speech was cut off by a knock on the door before Mason and Luke entered with four cups of coffee in their hands.

"Any new update?" Luke asked as they handed them their coffee.

"The doctor said he will be okay, they found no injuries or burn marks, but his chest was full of smoke. He should be awake any moment now, his body is just too exhausted" Their dad explained.

"How's your hand?" Mason's mother asked him.

After the funeral Mason and Luke followed Jason to make sure he was okay while keeping their distance so that he doesn't see them. They spent the whole time watching him and even slept in the car in front of his house.

Today they woke up to the scene of smoke getting out of his house with flames of fire swallowing the house from inside.

They rushed to the house and broke down the door but the smoke was so thick they could barely see anything inside. It was a miracle that they found him before the fire caught up to him, the fire was everywhere around him while he was laying down on the ground inches away from the flames.

Luke could only describe it in his head like it was something protecting him. It was like something was watching over him.

Mason burned his hand a little bit while trying to save his brother, but it was nothing that serious.

"It's fine, mom. Don't worry it doesn't hurt" Mason assured her.

"Thank you guys for keeping an eye on him and standing by his side. If it weren't for you he might be..." Jason's mother cried out.

Her husband rubbed her back to calm her down and she offered them a sad smile.

"Of course we will, mom, no need to thank us. He's our brother, what's family for if we don't have each other's backs on good and bad days?"

"Good boys, I raised you well. Family always comes first" Their father said proudly, patting their shoulders.

Jason groaned as he steered around in his bed. His eyebrows were scrunched as he squinted his eyes while trying to open them.

He was lost.

He didn't know where he was and didn't even remember what happened.

"Jason, honey" His mother tried to calm him down so that he doesn't rip his IV's out.

"Mom?" Jason asked in confusion.

"Yes, darling, I'm here my baby"

"What happened?"

"You had a little incident and your brothers brought you to the hospital, but don't worry you're okay" His dad explained.

"My lungs feel like they're burning"

Everyone in the room shared a look not knowing what to say. Jason caught up onto that and suddenly all the memories came back crashing onto him like a tsunami wave.

His heart sank and he looked away from his family in shame. He stared out of the window recalling the details in his head.

How could he be this weak? Lily would be disappointed in him, his daughter would be disappointed too.

"Jason, I-" Jason didn't let his mother continue as he cut her off mid sentence and apologized.

"I'm sorry for worrying you all, I promise this won't happen again"

With teary eyes his mother hugged him to her chest and rubbed his back as she felt the pain in his voice.

She's gonna get her son back even if it costs her everything.
