Chapter 24: 𝑋𝑋𝐼𝐼

A Shriveling FlowerWords: 8277

It is a curious thing, the death of a loved one.

We all now that our time in this world is limited.

And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try to readjust the way thought of things.

Do you know this feeling you get when life just seems unreal?

Like the feeling you get on the last day of school, when flying for the first time, when you're out during snowstorms or even when walking at night on an empty road.

Or when you get a news that is so unbelievable, like the death of a person you dearly love.

It is as if the world stops for a moment as your brain tries to make sense of what just happened.

We all now that we're going to die sooner or later. We all know that in any moment we could be nothing more than a memory and we all definitely know that someone else could be just a memory in our mind in any second.

We take our time in this life for granted, we think that we have lots of time, but the simple truth is that we will never have today again. Life is fragile and all it takes is a moment to change everything you take for granted.

We waste so much time on overthinking, worrying, wishing, comparing and complaining and being ungrateful instead of focusing on the simple blessings that surround us every day. Being able to see, hear, talk, run, walk, and breath daily without any problem is a blessing. Having a family, a roof to sleep under, food and water is a blessing.

No ones life is perfect.

Someone might have wealth to travel the whole world, but he's blind. And someone could be poor, but is blessed by his good and perfect health. Focus on what's important and be grateful for every second of everyday you get to spend with people you love.

Life is so very precious, make the most of it.

Lily sat on the bed with her legs crossed under her as she opened the new notebook she ordered before finding out she was ill; Lily giggled dryly at the irony of this universe. It was a black notebook with the words Death Note engraved on the cover.

Lily wanted to write a goodbye message to all the important people in her life. Her parents and her sweet neighbors and of course her Jason. Her heart contracted and her hands trembled as she held the pen.

What could you possibly write to the people you love dearly to make your death less painful for them?

As Lily was engrossed in writing the letters, pain radiated through her entire body and her body collapsed onto the bed. Her eyes were blinded by the strong white light and suddenly her body felt lighter and quieter than ever.

Lily shook her head trying to focus back on finishing the letters. It was a common occurrence nowadays as Lily kept thinking about how she's going to leave this world. Would it be today, tomorrow or next month? Will she be sleeping or at school, alone or with her parents or with Jason or around strangers?

The sound of an ambulance grabbed Lily's attention as she raced to the window for some reason... or will she die in an ambulance?

The door to Lily's room slammed open and Lily jumped in fear as she turned around abruptly only to be met by the sight of breathless Jason. Jason rushed towards Lily with urgency and engulfed her into a hug.

"Hello to you too" Lily greeted sarcastically.

Jason sighed and placed a kiss on the top of Lily's head, hugging her tightly to his chest.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I was coming to hangout with you and saw an ambulance speeding down the road. I – I thought something happened to you".

"Oh"

Lily had no words to say, but she tried to reassure Jason by laying her head onto his chest rubbing his back in attempt of soothing him.

"I'm okay, Jasey. I'm right here"

"How did you get in by the way? I didn't hear you knock"

"Your front door was open and that's what scared me even more"

"My mom was cleaning the front yard, maybe she went inside to get something and left it open"

"Yeah, probably"

"So, what are we doing today?"

"We're making another wish come true"

"You have something planned?"

"Of course, come on get dressed"

Jason stared fondly at the sight in front of him. The girl he's absolutely in love wearing a white flowery spring dress with red roses in her hand was a heavenly sight for him. One of Lily's wishes are to draw a smile on strangers faces and hopefully make their day.

She always liked the fact that a small compliment or a favor could change someone's day and the interaction could be stuck in their mind the whole day. And she absolutely loved seeing their wholesome smiles and reactions.

She was currently passing out roses to the people who filled the streets while throwing a complement here and there. Lily looked back at Jason with a radiant grin as an elderly woman planted a kiss on her cheek.

Jason wasn't the only one enjoying the view, Lily secretly -not really- kept glancing at him as he looked devilish while leaning on the wall. His legs were crossed as his hands were planted in his grey sweatpants and his eyes were hidden behind his black shades.

"Are you done ogling me, Fiore?" Jason smugly asked as Lily approached him with one last rose in her hand.

" I wasn't"

"Oh yeah, sure you weren't, little mouse"

"Cocky big mouse"

Jason threw his head back in laughter then pinched her nose teasingly.

"Come on give this last flower to someone we still have another plan to finish"

"This rose is for you, Jasey bear"

"For me?"

"Yes that's what I just said"

"But I don't want a rose"

"What do you want then?"

"A Lily".

"So cheesy" Lily giggled as she jokingly punched his arm.

"You love it, admit it"

"Mhm sure, now what other plans do we have?"

"Well, we made some people's day and now we're about to ruin other's day"

"What do you mean? I didn't have such a wish"

"No, you didn't, this is my wish"

"Ruining people's day is your wish?"

"Being childish is, follow me, darling"

.

.

"Run, Lily, run" Jason screamed to Lily.

Lily's laughter was making it harder to breathe despite the bad situation they landed themselves in. Lily and Jason raced down the street with police officers on their tail. They got reported to the police for disturbance by many citizens.

Jason thought that it is a great idea to live some childish moments from their childhood by knocking on every single house in the street and running away. Not once, not twice, but three times and that only landed them in troubles.

Troubles cannot be avoided with Jason around.

Jason grabbed Lily's hand in his and guided her through many roads as they tried to lose the police, but luck wasn't on their side. A police car blocked their way as the officers finally managed to catch them.

"Had fun kids? Because you're going to regret it in jail"

"Jason?" Lily glanced at Jason with worry written all over her face.

"Don't worry, Lil. I'll get us out of there before you know it."

"You forgot who I am?" Jason added with a wink and Lily sighed thankfully.

Lily hates the idea of being stuck somewhere against you're will without having the freedom to do the simplest things. She could never imagine how people live in jail, especially those who are sentenced for life.

Yes, they probably deserve it, but that doesn't change the fact that it's hard and difficult.

"This is low-key cool" Lily whispered to Jason in the back of the police car.

"Oh really miss two goody shoes"

"Yeah it's just feel so badass, but I know my parents will freak out when they find out"

"Yeah well my parents reaction will be even worse, but I don't care as long as you're happy"

"We're such a weird couple"

"What do you mean we're goals"

Lily chuckled at that which earned them a 'shut up kids, you're not on a trip' from the grumpy police officer.

"He's going to regret his whole life when I'm free" Jason promised with a devilish smirk and Lily couldn't help but smile at that. She's turning into a copy of Jason.
