Chapter 23: 𝑋𝑋𝐼

A Shriveling FlowerWords: 8592

The soft warm breeze and the flowering cherry trees marked the beginning of spring. The sun was shining in the bright sky as students littered the school's fields and gardens.

Today was one of those beautiful days that reminds you of summer days and gives you motivation knowing that the summer break is on its way.

Lily absentmindedly walked across the garden dazed and zoned out. She threw her backpack on the ground then laid down on her back under the Oak tree shade.

Her eyes followed the movement of the leaves dancing with the wind and the strikes of sun rays that managed to escape through them.

Lily wanted to keep going to school, because she wanted to feel normal like any other teenager her age. She didn't want to keep thinking of the fact that she's going to die, that won't do her or her parents any favor.

Though today she was in no mood to come to school and pretend like everything is okay, not with the events of her birthday playing on her mind.

Not with Jason on her mind.

It's been three days since Jason knew the truth and she still didn't hear anything back from him. She didn't call or text him, she just wanted to give him some space and time.

She really didn't feel like getting out today or tomorrow or yesterday , but she didn't want her mother to get worried. She already feels like she's too much of a burden on them.

A metal nail lying between the grass grabbed Lily's attention. She straightened herself up and picked it , moving it through her fingers. She turned around towards the tree and criss crossed her legs leaning forward towards it.

It was maybe a moment of boredom or a moment of overwhelming sadness and Lily took it all out by dragging the nail through the tree trunk. She didn't notice what she wrote until she was done.

It was probably silly, childish or maybe even cringe, but Lily didn't care.

J ♥️ L

Sorry that

U have

To lose

me

These simple words were enough to fill Lily's eyes with tears. The silent tears washed over her cheeks as her fist wrapped tightly around the nail. She just wanted to feel something... anything other than this heartache.

Lily was too engrossed in what she was doing; she didn't notice the figure that was looming over her for a while now. Two pairs of arms wrapped around her tightly and a head rested on her back.

Jason saw the carved words and the saddened girl who was crying, and felt his heart breaking all over again. His arms held onto Lily trying to trap her here forever, his head rested on Lily's back in an attempt to hold back the tears.

"I still can't accept this, how will I ever live without you now that I have found you?How will I live without your cheeky remarks? How will I live without that beautiful smile? How will I live without the enchanting melody of your laughter? How will I go on with life after losing my soul?"

"Jason" Lily breathlessly said.

"Why, God, why? take anything away from me, take it all if you want to; but please- please, let me keep her"

Lily has never seen Jason this way... like a heart broken kid . She never saw this side before. And quite frankly no one has ever seen this side of Jason, because he never loved someone this much.

Lily turned around and hugged Jason tightly, burying her head in his neck and placing kisses every now and then.

"It's going to be okay, Jasey"

"No it's not, how can you say that"

"We are all going to die someday. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will last forever."

Lily didn't know whether she was saying that to convince Jason or herself, but what she did know was that she didn't want to spend her few days left weeping. That's why she didn't want to get treatment and spend her last days in hospitals and in pain.

Jason tried to hold himself together; he didn't want his sorrow to affect Lily who already had a lot on her plate. He remembered the words that his mother told him and wiped his eyes and did the same to Lily.

Yesterday his mother saw him hanging out in the garden with depression waves radiating off of him. She noticed how far and unfocused he was, of course she would , he's her son after all. She raised him since he was a baby and she can sense his emotions and mood.

After lots of talking and chatting she finally managed to crack his shell and he told her.

'I know that's hard to take in, but there's nothing we can do ,honey. I know that you love her and I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this, baby. Lily is such a sweet girl with a kind soul and some souls my dear are too beautiful for this world, and so they leave. But you have to be there for her now, you have to make the best memories with her, you being distant won't lessen the pain. Try to make the best out of this time, make it special for her , help her achieve her dreams before it's too late,' his mother told him.

'But it hurts so bad, mom"

"Of course it does. Because you thought there will be more time, you thought you have forever, but you don't. But time doesn't matter what matters is what you do with it'

"No more crying, my love"

Jason and Lily stayed wrapped around each other for a little while with the soft sounds of nature and the far noise of students in the background.

"Do you have a paper and pen, Lil?"

"Yes? Why?"

"Can you please give it to me?"

Lily nodded and got him what he wanted with confusion written all over her face. Jason opened the pen cap followed by the notebook Lily handed him then looked at Lily

"What are you doing?" Lily asked.

"What are your dreams?"

"Huh?"

"Tell me what you want to achieve in your life and I promise I will try my best to make them all possible"

"Seriously? Why?"

"Because I don't want you to regret anything, baby.

You're right our time in life doesn't matter if it's short or long, what matters is what we do during this time. Some people die at 25 and aren't buried until 75, and some die young but have lived life fully"

"I love you" Lily said with glassy eyes.

"I love you more, Fiore"

Lily and Jason spent over thirty minutes discussing the list. They didn't move when the bell rang or when the sound of students disappeared or when the clouds blocked the sunlight.

"I wanted to get married and have kids and watch them grow up, but I guess that won't be possible anymore" Lily mumbled as she played with the ring on Jason's finger.

Jason stared down at her fingers that were fidgeting with his ring then closed the notebook and stood up offering his hand to Lily.

"Get up"

"Where are we going?"

"You'll see"

"Can't you ever answer the question for once?"

"No can do ma'am"

A few minutes later Lily and Jason reached their destination... the beach.

Jason helped Lily out of the car and held her hand then walked her down to the beach after they got rid of their shoes and socks. Rolling their pants up they both let the cool waves wash over their feet.

It was such a surreal moment, the combination of fresh air with the water sparkling under the sunlight.

Jason grabbed Lily's hand , turning her around so that she was facing him. He then knelt down on one knee and took the pen he had with him earlier and drew something on Lily's finger.

"What are you doing?" Lily asked with a soft giggle as the pen tickled her.

When Jason was done he lent back so his drawing was in Lily's sight. He drew a ring on her fourth finger and Lily looked at him weirdly.

"Lily White, from the second I saw you I knew you were mine to be, you're my first love and my first love to ...lose. It hurts more than anything that such an incredible soul like yours won't stay longer with me, but I don't care about anything anymore and I want to spend whatever time is left with you beside me ..... I love you so fucking much , will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?"

Lily looked at him like he grew two heads, she'd usually probably freak out or laugh at him or smack some sense into him, they were after all very young.

But hearing his words changed her mind, she only gets these few last days so better live it to the max instead of being chained by rules and fear.

Lily's answer was to grab the pen out of his hand and draw two lines on his ring finger. Jason looked at her with so much love and adoration waiting for her to say the words.

"Yes, I will marry you"

(A/N): I read a true story about two couples who found out the wife had cancer three days before their wedding.

They still went on with the wedding, he was there for her through it all and she passed away last week.

It was so heartbreaking yet their love is so inspiring.
