âOkada-kun, whatâs wrong? You looked dead during work today,â Riko-chan-san said, sounding worried.
âRiko-chan-san, have you ever breathed fireâ¦?â I asked.
âHuh? Fire?â
âI breathed fire before work todayâ¦â
Riko-chan-san made a bewildered expression. It seemed that she didnât really understand what I was saying. I supposed that was to be expected. If someone were to tell me the same thing, Iâd have to think that they might be crazy.
âAre you alright?â Riko-chan-san asked.
âYes, I suppose,â I said.
Even after work, when we were walking along the road together, Riko-chan-san was still worried. My face must have looked terrible.
âAh, Iâll take my leave here. Iâm going to buy a turtle on my way home today,â I said.
âA turtle?â Riko-chan-san made an expression as if to say that she really didnât understand me anymore. âShould I come along?â
âNo, itâs alright.â
âIâm free, you know.â
âNo, this is⦠I want to choose a turtle on my own.â
Iâd kind of become very picky when it came to reptiles. I wondered if it was alright to be like this.
When I got home, my mother raised her voice in surprise.
âTakuya, what on earth is that?â she asked. That was her immediate response to seeing her son come home holding a water tank, a turtle and the various tools needed to take care of it.
âIâm going to take care of this turtle from now on,â I said, holding up the turtle so that my mother could see it.
My mother groaned, putting a hand on her forehead as if she was feeling dizzy. âYou havenât gone crazy, have you?â
âIâm fine, Iâm fine.â
As my mother grumbled and complained, I set up the water tank in a corner of the living room.
âYouâve been kind of restless recently, havenât you?â she said.
Indeed, I was an indoor-type person, the kind who would spend most of the day in the house unless they had something to do. Thanks to Mamizu, Iâd been going places and doing things more often.
âI wonder if it means youâre feeling better,â my mother said with a sigh.
From an outside perspective, perhaps I looked as if Iâd become livelier after changing religions or something. The truth was different, though.
âWowâ said Mamizu, her eyes sparkling. âItâs a turtle!â
Was it alright to bring a turtle into a hospital room? No, no matter how I thought about it, it wasnât, but⦠Iâd put it inside my bag and snuck it in.
âAmazing, you remembered!â Mamizu said.
âBecause I received my pay from my part-time job early,â I said.
But isnât Mamizu the only person in the world who would be this happy about a turtle? I thought.
âHey, hey, whatâs its name?â Mamizu asked.
âName? A turtle is a turtle, right?â I replied plainly.
âAre you seriousâ¦?â
âYeah.â
âThat canât be!â Mamizu shouted, sounding angry. Happy, angry, she was a hectic person as usual.
âEven Natsume Souseki 1 just called his cat âcatâ without giving it a name,â I said. âItâs fine for this guy to be âturtle,â right?â
âYouâre not Souseki, are you, Takuya-kun! Youâve never studied abroad in London, and youâve never become ill at Shuzen Temple!â
Mamizu was knowledgeable about strange things.
âWell then, you name it, Mamizu,â I said, finding it too bothersome.
âHuh? Can I? Can I?â Mamizu looked kind of happy.
âIâm anticipating that youâll have a good naming sense.â
âKamenosuke 2.â
âYou have no sense!â I was surprised by how terrible it was.
âItâs fine, right? Itâs cute. Isnât it, Kamenosuke?â
It seemed that âKamenosukeâ had become established as the turtleâs name in Mamizuâs head. And so, the pet of my house was auspiciously named.
