Surprise â¨
Akruti Arora
Life has been blissful after my birthday. I never knew being in love with someone will cause you immense pleasure. After the proposal act, everyone teased me to death with the mystery man stuff. How would I know that it was Viren? I just saw his outline that day. For many days we went on numerous dates to compensate for the days we missed.
Each day we'll surprise the other with small gifts. Some times its miniatures or some times picture frames of each other. Sitting in front of the vanity table, I just smiled looking at my reflection. I'm literally flying today because Viren and I are going to take the first step towards our relationship.
Today is our roka. Now I'm sitting in front of the vanity table and doing last-minute touch-ups. Already my cousins and Nila told me that Viren's family is downstairs and the groom is impatiently waiting for me. I giggled imagining the look on his face. He tried face timing me, but I declined the call wanting to tease him to the fullest.
My cousins and Nila had come to take me down. Sahil and Sharav have already teased me to death this morning. I heard people talking while I was walking with my eyes downcast. I was feeling very shy, I even felt my cheeks turning red, but suddenly everyone grew quiet making me anxious. Till now, I didn't have any nervousness, but this silence is freaking me out. Is something wrong with my dress?
I found myself checking my dress. Nothing was wrong with the dress. I was dressed in a golden color Patiala suit since Mr. Hoity- Toity requested me to wear. It was embroidered and stone works. I'd also wore a diamond jewel with emerald stones in tear shape which was gifted by my Dadi. I had let my hair loose this time. Confused I looked up to see everyone staring at me.

But I couldn't focus on others when I saw My Man, yes My Man!! Sitting on the couch looking handsome as ever. Dressed in crisped Prussian blue shirt and black pants he kept gazing at me with a smile never leaving his lips. I felt a whole zoo running inside my tummy. My cheeks were probably too red. Our eye contact was broken I felt someone nudging me. I turned my head to the left to look Nila giving me a teasing look.

Then Viren's dadi made me sit near Viren, and I could bet you that he kept looking at me. "Bhai stop looking at Bhabhi (Sister-in-law) like that. She's sitting near you and will spend her whole life with you", I heard Preeti say, whilst others chuckled.
Then my parents do aarti to Viren. They also keep tika on his forehead whilst he keeps his right hand to the back of his head. I smiled looking at them. He bends down to get the blessings of my parents. Instead, they stop him and hug him. I felt tears accumulating in my eyes. To see my past and present(my parents) with my present and future (My Viren).
I wonder how we, woman handle every single relation because on your parents' side you'll have mother's side and father's side same goes for your in-laws' side too. In total, we'll be handling four-family. But that's what gives us happiness. To see our loved ones together
Then my parents give him some shagun as a part of rituals. Viren's dadi and dadu do the same thing to me. They gifted me with shagun and I bend down to take their blessings. Instead, they hugged me and told, "You're not our daughter-in-law, instead you're our daughter". In reply, I smiled at them. I was fortunate enough to have them as my future family despite what my so-called parents did to them.
Everyone made themselves comfortable on the couches and the chairs which were provided. Soon the elders talking amongst themselves to finalize the wedding date. Suddenly I felt my fingers being touched. I saw it was Viren trying to entwine our hands, I let him do whatever he wants. Because his happiness is means a lot to me.
"Oh! Love birds, everyone is here! Do have some shame.", Daksh said to us in a dramatic way. I giggled whilst Viren groaned.
"Why don't you romance with your girl huh?", Viren snapped at him.
"Whoa, bro! Easy there! I know when to romance with my girlfriend. I'm not like you. I have some decency and my woman is not a big fan of PDA", Daksh replied shrugging, while Nila was glaring at him.
"When are you guys going to make a move like them?", Sharav asked the couple. Daksh was about to answer when Preeti called Nila to help her. Excusing herself from us she went to Preeti.
"So answer us now", Viren asked him. He sighed and started. "Well, we do feel something for each other. Heck! I can't even imagine my life without her. But I don't want to scare her. I want her to take this relationship forward. Even though she met my parents she's afraid of commitments. Like family, love, and all. She was deprived of everything from her childhood. So yes, we'll date for some years then get married".
Daksh's reply made me tear up. My best friend Nila was lucky to have him in her life. Even I know about her fears, and I was thinking about taking this to Daksh. But I guess he knows about her very well that I don't need to do. I was brought out of my daze when someone shook my shoulder.
"Are you okay?", asked me a worried Viren. I smiled and replied, "I'm more than okay". To which he smiled in response. Soon the all the elders gathered around us and the priest was sitting near my dadu.
"So it's been decided you're wedding will take place after three months", the priest told everyone. While we all agreed to it, but one didn't agree but also made me blush like anything.
"WHAT? The wedding... it's too far!! Dadu isn't there any nearer dates like two weeks after or next week?", Viren asked his dadu in a worried tone, to which everyone laughed. I so badly wanted to kill him.
"Yes, there it is!", Viren's dadi said. "Tell me, what date it is?", Viren asked with eagerness evident in his voice.
"It's after six months!", she replied. I burst out laughing seeing Viren's reaction. It's like someone has banned him watching money heist.
"Why? Are you so eager Viren?", Dadi asked him. "Well, Harleen even I was eager to get married to you. Since he's my grandson, he's bound to react in that way". Again everyone roared into fits of laughter, whilst Viren's dadi blushed.
'How cute'.
"Okay I agree for the date, that's after three months", Viren replied sulking and also adding more pressure to the last words 'three months'. After hearing his words, everyone started talking amongst themselves happily. I could see how happiness is radiating from everyone's face.
I miss Vinesh dad and Pranita Mom. How happy they would have been to see Viren getting married. To see how happy their daughter is in her life. I looked around everyone.
All our grandparents laughing and talking. My parents, uncles, and aunts, and Devesh uncle, Rey's dad's best friend discussing the upcoming rituals. Both sets of our cousins chatting and taking pictures, and I turned around to look at my Rey, but he was already looking at me.
"What?", he asked me.
"Nothing, thanks for coming into my life", I replied to him sincerely. I really don't know what would have happened if Viren didn't enter my life. It would have been so awful.
"I think we should thank God for making us meet again. Dadu always said, 'If you're destined to be each other then no other force can separate them from being together.' So you're destined to be mine, Pari. One way or the other we would have met", he replied winking at me.
'Oh God how cute he looks!!'
I sighed happily looking at everyone. It's something I could always wish for.
