Once she exited, Jessica’s frustration boiled over. “Why did you and Mom even have me? It’s because of you that I’m humiliated! Eileen is the daughter of the Vazquez family, and I’m forever hidden. Why?”

“Jessica, my dear, please calm down,” Conroy tried to soothe her. “I’ve explained that the Vazquez legacy will eventually be yours. Whether or not you’re recognized now is not important.” He comforted Jessica for a while until she was finally willing to speak to him again.

“I don’t care anymore. Eileen has made her stance clear, so don’t hold me back. I’m going to pursue Bryan,” she said.

“Alright,” Conroy quickly agreed.

Back in Bryan’s office, Eileen didn’t mention the fact that she now had a rival in love. She was wary of reigniting discussions about her ongoing struggles with the setup meetings.

While entertaining Gabriela, she received a text from Julio asking for Dalores’ phone number. Her response was prompt and firm: “Why don’t you have Dalores’ number? And why do you need it now? Answer these questions convincingly, then I might consider your request.”

Julio didn’t know how to answer the first question. He only responded, “I need to discuss something with Dalores. It’s about my divorce.”

Julio and Mabel had had a marriage more on paper than in spirit, celebrated with a forgettable ceremony.

The abrupt mention of divorce made Eileen’s brow furrow. Julio hastened to clarify, “She has broken the terms we agreed upon. If I can prove it, I can part ways with her without conflict.”

Since Eileen was unaware of the entire situation, she chose to forward Julio’s contact information to Dalores.

With her lips pressed tightly together, Dalores gazed at the familiar number displayed on her phone. She remembered the number even without Eileen sending it to her. She hesitated for a moment before dialing Julio. After a few rings, his icy voice echoed on the other end of the line.

“Dalores?”

He recognized immediately that it was her on the line.

“What proof do you need?” Dalores asked directly.

Julio responded straightforwardly. “Did anyone get in touch with you during your pregnancy?”

“Yes,” Dalores answered. “Someone was covertly trying to aid my escape. I was losing hope of finding an opportunity to leave when they abruptly threatened me, declaring that if I didn’t leave, I would lose my baby.”

She recounted all her interactions with this mysterious helper to Julio. It now dawned on her that the person was Mabel. Yet, she was puzzled by Mabel’s motives. Mabel had married Julio for his wealth and was unable to have children herself. Why had Mabel helped her escape with her baby?
