Chapter 605:
Perhaps Bryan had been so insistent because he didnât want her to suffer this much. Yet, she believed he must be feeling better now than he had in the village. This place was closer to her and Gabriela, and even if he⦠at least they were nearby.
Thinking of Gabriela made Eileenâs sadness deepen. She gazed at the colorful liquid on the table, fighting the temptation to drink it.
She knew Gabriela was at home, waiting for her. She needed to return.
Late into the night, she drove home just past eleven. Aside from a slight fatigue, her delicate face showed no signs of the eveningâs emotional toll.
In the hospital room, Bryan, dressed in blue and white hospital attire, stood by the window, gazing out at the brightly lit building in the center of the city.
It was the EB Group building. He had been monitoring its progress for months. Under Eileenâs leadership, the company had thrived.
âItâs so cold. Why are you standing by an open window? Arenât you afraid of catching a cold?â Josue said as he entered the room.
He walked over to close the window but found a stubborn crack that wouldnât budge. He applied more force, but the window resisted.
Looking down, Josue noticed that Bryanâs fingers were caught on the windowâs edge. His fingersâaccidentally crushed twice by Josueâhad turned pale.
âWhy didnât you say something?â Josue quickly moved Bryanâs hand away.
Bryan glanced down and noticed it for the first time. He squinted slightly and murmured, âI didnât feel any pain.â
His fingertips were numb, a worrying sign of his worsening condition.
Josue gripped Bryanâs wrist with concern. âDoes this hurt?â
âMy fingers donât hurt, but my wrist does,â Bryan replied, pulling his hand back. âWhat did the doctor say?â
âYou havenât had a blood test in nearly a month,â Josue said, handing Bryan a report. âAfter this recent test, weâve noticed that the drugâs effects are slowing down. The team is working hard on an antidote, but theyâve hit a roadblock because one of the ingredients wonât break down. Theyâre still questioning the laboratory personnel.â
Josue gestured for Bryan to return to his bed. After a pause, he continued, âCoen is more cunning than we thought. The experiments were conducted by multiple individuals, none of whom saw the entire process. So, even though the lab staff have given statements, we still donât know the exact drug dosage because⦠one key participant is missing.â
Everyone in the laboratory had been detained, except for the person responsible for controlling the drug dosage. This had severely hindered the development of the antidote. Whoever was involved in the experiment was no ordinary person. This alone suggested that Coen still had people working for him.
âCoen died in the explosion, and with that, we lost all leads,â Josue reflected. âWe should have captured him when we had the chance, forced a confession, and secured the antidote.â
Bryan glanced at the medical report before setting it back down. âThen start with Coenâs associates. Donât overlook anyone.â
As Josue was about to agree, he suddenly changed his mind and said, âWhy should we bother investigating? Youâre ready to give up.â
A pillow flew at Josueâs face.
