Chapter 296:
Zola clenched her teeth and said, âHeâs not going to be paralyzed. Heâs going to be fine.â
âForget about that for now. Come back while heâs in the ICU so you can seize control of the Apex Group. Brandon will join you there. This is a good chance to bring in shareholders and senior executives,â Lydia said.
Lydia and Brandon always had their own plans.
If Bryan died, they would see it as a problem resolved. If he didnât, they would seize control of the company.
âWait, shouldnât he hate Eileen? How could he have risked his life to save her? Are they both still in touch?â Lydia asked doubtfully.
Zola, recalling the cold expression on Eileenâs face, replied, âThatâs not possible. Itâs possible that Bryan has not moved on from Eileen, but Iâm certain Eileen has moved on from him. You should have seen the look of disdain she had on her face even after he saved her. She left even before his surgery was over.â
Lydia and Brandon exchanged knowing glances, as both of them seemed to have come to the same conclusion.
Zola added, âI donât think I need to go to the company right now. I just want to focus on taking care of Bryan so that we can get married.â
âIf we manage to oust him from his position in the company, it will no longer be necessary for you to marry him,â Brandon bluntly said.
Lydia took Brandonâs hand in hers and shook her head. She said to Zola, âWe could kill two birds with one stone. You should head to the hospital once youâre done with your work at the company.â
They had agreed for Zola to go take care of Bryan in the hospital.
Donât miss out gαâηÏνðlsâ¤cøm Zola decided on a time to go to the company before ending the call.
She turned to Stella and said, âLet me take care of Bryan.â
âThatâs okay. He hates me and would send my people away. If you can persuade him to let you stay in the ward, then you can take care of him.â Stella looked quite relieved to hear that Bryan was okay.
She caught a glimpse of Bryan through the window as the doctors and nurses pushed him to the ICU.
He was wearing the blue and white hospital gown, which was unbuttoned at the chest to make space for the equipment to be attached. The machine beeped constantly. He was pale, and his lips were bloodless. He was unconscious.
There was a look of worry and fear on Stellaâs face as she saw his condition.
A car sped down the road.
Hands clenched around her seatbelt, Eileen gazed out the window. She was trying to keep her emotions in check.
She could still smell Bryanâs blood, and her hands felt sticky as though they were still covered in it. Although she had cleaned the blood from her face, she had not been able to get rid of the smell.
âYou know you can cry if you want to, Eileen,â Phoebe said, looking at her.
She could sense the sadness hidden within Eileenâs exterior.
She added, âIâve never seen Bryan look so miserable. If there was any misunderstanding between you two, just explain it. I thinkâ¦â
Phoebe cut herself short. She knew the presence of Stella and Brandon would make it impossible to convince Eileen.
She hoped that the misunderstanding between Bryan and Eileen would not escalate into something bigger. But on the other hand, she hoped Eileen would stay out of trouble, and Eileen wouldnât be able to do that if she married into the Dawson family, as the marriage would open the door to different sorts of conflicts.
Eileen would be easy prey, as she had no family background. The Dawson family would likely cast her aside if they got backed into a corner.
âThereâs nothing to explain. Iâm just sad. That is better than losing my life,â Eileen said calmly.
âForget what I said. You go home and get a good rest. Iâll ask Jacob to keep an eye on you. Youâll be notified if anything new comes up.â Phoebe then pulled up to Eileenâs house. She took out two pieces of tissue and handed them to her.
Eileen took the tissues from her with a smile and said, âYou donât need to feel bad for me. I should be the one feeling bad, seeing as your wedding was ruined because of me.â
She then suddenly recalled that somebody had pushed her back into the dangerous area intentionally.
She said, âThe hotel staff wonât be careless. Ask Jacob to investigate this issue, as I believe someone must have done something.â
Eileen wasnât sure if somebody had found out about the deal between her and Julio or if something else was responsible for it.
She only knew that she had a target on her back.
âIâll do my best to uncover the truth,â Phoebe said.
Eileen turned around and went into her house. When she got in, she immediately took off her blood-stained clothes and took a shower.
She then changed into her home clothes. Her eyes caught the bloodstain on the sink.
Tears suddenly welled up in her eyes as she recalled how she had staggered when she had been shoved out. She remembered how Bryan had rushed out to catch her. At that moment, it had seemed nothing else mattered to him but her.
Within her was a feeling of sadness, but she also felt relieved that she and the baby were okay. Julio had sent a dozen texts after the accident.
He sent one every few minutes when she didnât respond. When Eileen finally saw the texts, she immediately texted him back, telling him that she was âfine.â
âHow about Mr. Dawson?â Julio asked.
Julio had been kicked out of the hotel. It was from the hotel staff that he learned that Eileen and Bryan had been crushed under the crystal lamp.
âHe is in the ICU; he needs three days of observation, but heâs stable now,â Eileen replied.
Eileen then asked Julio if the Freguson family was aware of her partnership with him. Julioâs response was no.
âI havenât officially made a move against the shareholders you investigated. Even if I do, they wonât be able to connect you with it, so I believe this has nothing to do with it,â Julio said.
Eileen grew thoughtful upon hearing this as she tried to think of what else could have a reason to harm her. It immediately occurred to her that Kian was related to Phoebe, so he must have been there today.
She didnât remember seeing him.
Regardless of who she suspected, she knew she needed evidence. She put her phone down and headed for the apartment across from hers.
Bailee, after rushing out of the hotel, took a taxi, so she wasnât aware of what had happened.
Huey chased after Phoebeâs taxi. The taxi driver, upon noticing he was being chased, accelerated.
âDid you get into an altercation with anyone? I think you should get down here. I wonât charge you for the distance covered. Trying to outrun the car would likely lead to an accident,â the taxi driver said.
Bailee could see Hueyâs car behind them from the rearview mirror.
Baileeâs eyes watered, but she said, âIgnore him. Pay for whatever damage he causes you.â Bailee then looked away from the rearview mirror.
The driver, upon this, continued to drive. When he finally got to the gate of the education agency, which was Baileeâs destination, he let out a sigh of relief. When Bailee got out of the taxi, he stopped her.
He grabbed her wrist and said, âPlease donât walk away. Letâs talk.â
âThereâs nothing to talk about. You broke your promise to me. I have nothing to say to you,â Bailee said, struggling to break free from his hold.
âI did what I did out of desperation. Iâve thought about my actions, and I know I was wrong and shouldnât have lost my temper with you,â Huey said regretfully.
Bailee stopped struggling but still refused to meet his eyes.
Huey continued, âSince you returned to Onaland, I havenât even had a meal alone. Although we see each other every day, youâre always busy with work, and Iâm just there to keep you company. Those are not dates; itâs just me keeping you company at work!â
Huey had planned on taking her on dates to eat a lot of delicious food and watch movies.
âBut Iâm busy with work. Iâve shared a lot about my work at the education agency with you. You told me you understood,â Bailee retorted. Every time she worked late, Huey was there. Sometimes, he even fell asleep while staying with her at the education agency.
Bailee did feel for him, but what could she do about it? She couldnât just give up her work.
âDoesnât Eileen own the education agency? She could handle more of the tasks there. I preferred it back when you were just a receptionist. I want time with you,â Huey said.
He couldnât stand the fact that they only met twice a week and only for five minutes each time. Bailee, however, wanted to support her family. She felt worthless anytime she remembered that Eileen had paid for her and Rubyâs medical fees.
She wanted to find her worth. Although the journey was still long, she believed that one day Eileen would come to rely on her.
Besides, Eileen was creating the needed opportunities for her.
âNo. Eileen has not been herself for a while. She canât be allowed to handle everything. Her personal life is in disarray, and she needs time for herself. I have to manage the agency myself. I want to be able to support her and my mother,â Bailee said.
Huey stared at her stubbornly for a while.
Finally, he let go of her, turned around, and sat down on a stone chair by the roadside.
His shoulders were slumped, and his head was lowered. Bailee, after thinking for a while, walked up to him and said, âIâll only get busier. If you canât bear itâ¦â
âCan we move in together?â Huey asked, cutting her short. âI donât mean it that way. Iâm just saying that since I donât see you during the day, I can at least see you at night. You can move in with me. We donât have to stay in the same room,â Huey quickly explained. Baileeâs cheeks flushed red at his suggestion.
Huey added, âSometimes Iâll be busy, and you will be busy. We have little time for each other except at night. I really want to spend time with you.â He stood up and approached Bailee, looking at her flushed face.
He then gently took hold of her wrist, leaned down, and planted a kiss on her lips. The kiss was quick yet gentle.
They had kissed before, but those kisses had been hurried and uneventful. This kiss was different, as it left Bailee unable to raise her head even after it was over.
