Chapter 156:
âIf youâre not afraid Iâll kill him, go ahead and take care of him,â Bryan said, his voice cold. After applying ointment to the last scratch, Eileen tossed the swab into the trash. The room fell silent for a few moments before she broke it. âI have to go to the hospital anyway. I need to check on Milford. I donât know how heâs doing.â
She couldnât shake the image of Milford getting beaten up by those thugs yesterday without uttering a single word. He had stayed with her instead of running away, even though he could have easily escaped. Milford reminded her of Roderick.
âIâll take you there later,â Bryan said, scrolling through his phone, his brows furrowing at something he saw. Eileen glanced down at the oversized shirt she was wearing. âI donât have any clothes here.â
âWhen Jacob and Phoebe arrive, you can tell Phoebe what you need,â Bryan said, standing up and glancing at her.
His eyes lingered on her legs, visible beneath the black shirt, long and slender. He swallowed hard, memories of last night flooding back. Those legs had mesmerized him all night. He wasnât satisfied, not even close. Suppressing his restlessness, Bryan headed to the bathroom. He paused, remembering something, and went to retrieve a new set of toiletries from the cabinet.
âCome freshen up. Theyâll be here soon,â he told Eileen, leaving no room for argument. Eileen hesitated briefly, then followed him into the bathroom. The sink was large enough for two. Bryan handed her the toiletries, clearly meant for women.
Eileen unwrapped the toothbrush and squeezed out some toothpaste. As she started brushing her teeth, she caught their reflections in the mirror. Bryan glanced at her, noticing how she was a head shorter than him, and he arched his eyebrows.
Half an hour later, Bryan descended the staircase from the second floor. Jacob and Phoebe had already arrived. Bryan strolled over, lazily gesturing upstairs. âEileenâs in the first room on the left side of the second floor.â
âOkay,â Phoebe replied, heading up with the clothes she had brought for Eileen.
gαâηÏνðâsâ¤com brings you fresh updates Bryan sank into the sofa, fiddling with his phone contentedly, wearing a faint smile. Jacob clicked his tongue before sitting next to Bryan. âLook at you. You slept with Eileen last night, didnât you? But youâre having a hard time in Wist Land now, and youâve ticked off the Blake family. Whatâs your plan?â
Bryan glanced up as if he didnât care. âI donât know.â
âDonât say I didnât warn you,â Jacob said. âI got a call from my father this morning. Heâs cut me off. He wonât let me give you the money.â He sighed, crossing his legs. âHe must have known Iâd help you, so he froze my assets in advance. Now, because of you, I had to tell him even when I bought a loaf of bread.â
Bryanâs frown deepened, his demeanor growing serious. âFeeling the heat now?â Jacob gloated. âRealityâs tougher than you thought. Your project is short on funds. Only one man in all of Wist Land can help, Mr. White, but he happens to be Arthurâs uncle.â
So, Bryanâs original plan to get Mr. Whiteâs investment was destined to fail. Phoebeâs gaze made Eileen feel uneasy as she entered the room. Eileen stood up, took the clothes from Phoebe, and got changed in the cloakroom. When she emerged, she said with embarrassment, âWhy did you buy this dress?â The dressâs square collar did nothing to conceal the marks on Eileenâs body.
âWow!â Phoebe grinned. âLooks like you had quite a night. Weâre both adults. Whatâs there to be shy about?â Eileen was speechless. Her ears turned red as she futilely tugged at her collar.
âI have a question for you,â Phoebe said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. âIs Bryan any good in bed?â Phoebe looked serious, waiting eagerly to hear about Eileenâs sex life with Bryan. But Eileen rolled her eyes and ignored the question.
Phoebe leaned closer with a mischievous glint in her eye. âIâve heard that a man with a high nose is good in bed. Is that true? Youâve had many suitors this year, yet you turned them all down. Are you still hung up on Bryan? Do you just want to sleep with him, or are you looking for a serious relationship?â
âPhoebe!â Eileen snapped, grabbing a pillow and hurling it at Phoebe. âHeâs just average, and no, I donât want to sleep with him!â
Her eyes flashed angrily at Phoebe. âIf youâre so curious, why donât you try Jacob yourself and leave me out of it!â Phoebeâs grin widened, but it quickly faded when she noticed the man standing at the door. âIâm just asking about your experience,â she said.
Eileen had been keeping her temper in check in the presence of Bryan before. Now, she decided to vent all her frustration to Phoebe. âFine,â she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. âSince you asked, Iâll tell you. Youâre better off without a guy like Bryan. He sucks in bed. Now, letâs go downstairsââ
When she turned, she suddenly saw Bryan. Phoebe, sensing the tension, stood up and quickly fled the room. Bryan narrowed his eyes, a smirk playing on his lips. âSeems like my services arenât appreciated by my employer. I suppose I need to improve.â
The weight of his dangerous gaze made Eileenâs heart race. Eileen instinctively took a step back, frowning. The noon sun filtered through the French windows, casting a golden glow on her graceful figure. Her smooth skin gleamed, and the faint hickeys on her collarbone made Bryan frown.
After a pause, he moved to the closet and pulled out one of his T-shirts. âPut this on,â he ordered sharply. Eileen took the shirt and put it on. It was large for her, but she tied the hem, making it look stylish with her dress.
When she descended the stairs with Bryan, the house was quiet. Jacob and Phoebe had already left. Bryan whipped up a quick meal. They ate in silence, then made their way to the hospital.
In the VIP ward, they found Milford and Raymond. Milford and Raymond were both clad in the standard blue and white hospital uniforms, sharing the same room. Milford had a bruised face and a sprained ankle. He was sitting on the bed when Eileen entered. Seeing her, he instinctively tried to get out of bed but quickly gave up, turning his head away in awkwardness.
Raymond appeared unscathed, and Eileen wondered why he was also in the ward. Reading her confusion, Raymond rolled up his sleeve, revealing a wrist wrapped in gauze. âMy wrist is injured,â he explained.
Eileen nodded. She set her bag on the couch and moved to Milfordâs bedside. Bryan called Raymond out of the room, leaving Eileen and Milford alone.
âYouâre an idiot!â Milford couldnât control his anger once he was alone with Eileen. âI have nothing to do with you! Why did you come to save me? If you hadnât shown up, Iâd just get a beating. Arthur wouldnât dare kill me anyway!â
Eileen remained silent, letting him vent. Milford, despite his rough words, was fiercely loyal to his friends. âDonât ever come to save me next time!â he exclaimed. Then, realizing something, he added, âNo, Iâm sorry. There wonât be a next time!â
Eileen couldnât help but laugh. âYou must have picked that up from your grandmother. If you say something bad, you have to apologize.â
Milfordâs face flushed with irritation. âWhat are you laughing at? My grandmother always said there are powerful deities in the sky watching over us. So if I say something wrong, I should apologize.â
âSheâs right,â Eileen agreed, sitting down. âDidnât she also tell you to study hard?â
Milford glared at her, momentarily speechless. Eileen smiled, trying to lighten the mood. âItâs over now, and Iâm fine. Why are you still angry? Besides, youâre still a kid. We adults have our own ways of solving problems.â
Milford snorted. âWhat would you have done if Bryan hadnât shown up? Were you planning to jump off the building?â
Eileen marveled at Milfordâs perceptiveness. He could read her thoughts from the slightest expression. She replied, âWell, I didnât jump, did I? And the problem got solved.â
Milford grunted again. âOnly Arthur is dealt with,â he said dismissively. âI heard Raymondâs been on the phone a lot. Bryanâs in trouble because he offended the Blake family.â
Eileenâs eyes widened as she remembered what Phoebe had mentioned. Bryan had been in deep water, and it seemed the tides were only rising against him now. She pressed her lips together and turned toward the door. Through the frosted glass, she could make out the blurry outline of Bryanâs silhouette.
A slight crack in the door allowed snippets of the conversation between Bryan and Raymond to filter through, but the words were muffled. Even so, Eileen could hear that Raymondâs voice carried an unmistakable note of anxiety.
âI want to leave the hospital,â Milford said. âThe doctor said I could go home. Why are you guys keeping me here?â
Eileen turned to him, her brow furrowed. âDid the doctor really give you permission to leave?â
âYes!â Milford replied, his impatience clear. âRaymond was supposed to discharge me, but instead, heâs been stuck here with me.â Milford couldnât quite make sense of this.
Hearing that, Eileen was also confused. At that moment, the door swung open. Raymond entered, a strained smile on his face. He grabbed his phone from the bed and started to walk out. But then, he paused. In his haste, he had grabbed his phone with his bandaged hand. Shifting the phone to his other hand, he turned guiltily to find Eileen looking at him.
âIâve been so busy that I forgot I was hurt. I really need to take it easy,â he said and quickly left the room. After a brief conversation in the hallway, Raymond returned to the ward with Bryan, settling back onto the bed. He told Bryan and Eileen, âThank you for visiting, Mr. Dawson and Ms. Curtis. Donât worry; Iâll take good care of Milford.â
Eileen nodded. âThank you, Raymond. I appreciate you looking after Milford.â She felt a pang of sympathy for Milford. Arthurâs wrath had been aimed at her, and Milford had been caught in the crossfire.
Raymond cast a quick glance at Bryan and said to Eileen, âMs. Curtis, could you handle some of my responsibilities for the time being? Official work and Mr. Dawsonâs personal mattersâyouâre familiar with them. This should be an easy task for you.â
