Chapter 1126:
Leyla and Ruth sat side by side on the sofa, exchanging awkward smiles that lingered for an uncomfortable stretch of time. The silence between them was palpable as they avoided eye contact and conversation.
Bailee and Huey clung to Gabriela, yet Gabriela felt they were a bit unfamiliar, having not seen them for some time. She slipped and hurried around the room to avoid them. Upstairs, Eileen and Bryan were packing their luggage. After coming back down, they both felt resigned by the awkward atmosphere in the room.
âGrandma, Mom, didnât you two chat well on the phone? Why do you seem like strangers now?â Eileen said, seated between Leyla and Ruby. She put their hands together. âLetâs talk, or itâll just be more awkward.â
Ruby, typically shy, had only managed a polite greeting to Leyla earlier. Urged by Eileen, she felt compelled to initiate further conversation. âYou know Iâve been before?â she asked Leyla.
Leyla responded promptly, âYes, I am aware. Iâm currently dealing with a heart condition myself.â
âOh, I also struggle with heart issues,â Ruby confessed, placing a hand over her chest. âLast check-up, my doctor was concerned about my slow heart rate.â
âSlow heart rate can be serious,â Leyla cautioned. âMy doctor in Alverton mentioned it.â
Caught between the discussion of ailments, Eileen didnât know what to say. Why must they chat about such topics? She turned and looked desperately for support. Bailee returned a sympathetic glance but continued playing with Gabriela. In the dining room, Bryan chuckled at the scene while preparing a nutritious meal for Gabriela.

âLetâs make soup,â Ruby suggested without hesitation. Leyla nodded and said, âMaking soup would soften the carrots, making it easier for Gabriela to digest.â
Ruby stood up decisively, âIâll handle dinner tonight. Youâve been working nonstop, Bryan.â
Leyla said, âLet me assist you.â She then followed Ruby to the kitchen. âItâs clear that Gabriela is a bright child. Youâve cared for her wonderfully.â
Leaning against the sofa, Bryan glanced at the relieved Eileen and said, âThey need a lighter topic to discuss. Itâs just going to get more awkward the more they talk.â
Previously, the conversation had steered towards illness, and the awkwardness would return once the topic was over. Yet, when the discussion shifted to Gabriela, the conversation flowed effortlessly.
Eileen, lifting her gaze to look at Bryan, asked, âHow are you always so thoughtful?â
âPeople say partners complement each other, you know,â Bryan replied. He affectionately pinched Eileenâs cheek. âLetâs return to the Dawson Mansion tomorrow.â
Just after his return to Onaland, Stella had urgently called him, asking him to go back tonight. Engrossed in unpacking, he had missed Stellaâs intention to let him go back alone. Stella hadnât wanted him to visit her with Eileen.
âWhy didnât you mention it earlier? My grandmother has brought plenty of unique items, including a special one for your grandmother. Letâs head back early tomorrow,â Eileen said.
âOkay,â Bryan agreed. Just as he began to smile, he felt a small hand grip his thigh. Gabriela looked at him with wide eyes and puffed cheeks, crying out, âDad, help! Aunt Bailee is crazy.â
