Eileen headed directly into the ultrasound room. Jaliyah rushed home. During dinner, she proudly pulled out her ultrasound report.

“I have some exciting news. I’m pregnant!” she said.

Kamila was momentarily taken aback. After examining the report closely, she smiled and said, “You’re finally pregnant again!”

“The doctor mentioned that there’s a high chance I’m carrying a boy. I’ll have a blood test in two days to confirm. The results are usually very accurate,” Jaliyah said to Kamila. Then, she looked at Keith with a mixture of shyness and pride. “Aren’t you happy?”

Keith had been eating quietly. He nodded with a smile and said, “Of course, I’m happy. Whether it’s a boy or not isn’t important. What matters is that this news will…”

“Bring more joy to the Aston family.” Jaliyah’s face fell at his response.

She wondered if Keith’s indifference to the gender of the baby was because his thoughts were consumed by his illegitimate daughter.

Kamila studied Keith briefly before setting the ultrasound report aside and continuing to eat.

“I’m full now,” Keith said, putting down his fork. Then, he turned and went upstairs.

Once Keith was gone, Jaliyah couldn’t contain her emotions any longer. She turned to Kamila and asked, “Mom, why do you both look unhappy?”

“We’ll have to wait until you really give birth to a boy to be happy. Don’t you understand that?” It was clear Kamila was in a foul mood, largely due to Keith’s earlier behavior.

Jaliyah was clearly frustrated by her response.

Kamila stopped in her tracks and turned back to Jaliyah. “What did you just say?”

Jaliyah said unhappily, “I ran into Eileen at the hospital this afternoon. It was bad luck—she really dampened my mood. And now, seeing you in this state when I come back, it has to be because of her!”

Kamila’s eyes narrowed as she asked, “Did you see Eileen in the gynecology department? Did she go in for any prenatal checkups?”

After a brief pause, Jaliyah responded, “Yes, she did go into the ultrasound room. What else would she be doing there if not for a prenatal checkup?”

Kamila quickly pieced it together and concluded that Eileen must be pregnant.

She turned and hurried upstairs.

After getting a comprehensive checkup, Eileen left the hospital holding a report diagnosing gastritis. Bryan was carrying some medicine. He gently held Eileen’s waist as he helped her into the car.
